Soon, all-EV fleet at Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary to supply essentials to maintain ‘safe environment for animals'
The Delhi government is planning to replace all existing petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles —such as trucks, jeeps, cars, motorcycles, and utility vehicles —that are currently used for supplying food, water, and other essentials at the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, with electric vehicles (EVs). The move comes in the wake of the observation that animals are in distress due to pollution.
Delhi Forest and Wildlife Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Saturday said, 'There are about a hundred vehicles, including trucks and jeeps, being used in the wildlife sanctuary for the supply of food and water, as well as for other purposes. These vehicles are used for official purposes only, but we have observed that petrol and diesel vehicles negatively affect the environment and disturb the animals here.'
'Trucks and jeeps also create noise and vehicular pollution, which distresses the animals. There are a good number of leopards, deer, reptiles, and butterflies here, all of which roam freely. However, when they hear any noise, they either hide or lie down. To create a safer and more pleasant environment for both animals and visitors, and to boost tourism, the government plans to replace such vehicles with EVs,' he added.
The Minister underlined that he has directed the officials concerned in the Forest and Wildlife Department to propose an EV fleet and develop charging stations within the next six months. 'The department also plans to hire e-golf carts and e-cycles for visitors. About 9-10 carts have already arrived and will soon be available for public use. We have also observed that e-trucks are available. Soon, the department will begin hiring e-vehicles,' said the Minister.
The Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, located in South East Delhi, covers an area of 32 square kilometers, and sees tourist activities, such as birdwatching, nature walks, and Neeli Jheel drives.
Under the birdwatching trail, there are the Blue Bull Trail (5 km), Sandgrouse Trail (3.5 km), Sparrow Trail (2.5 km), and Palash Trail (2 km). Commonly seen birds include Peafowl, Common Woodshrike, Sirkeer Malkoha, Indian Scops Owl, Black Eagles, and Oriental Scops Owl.
The nature walk starts from the Tughlakabad Gate, which covers Butterfly Park (4 acres), Aravalli Forest Centre (4 acres), and a Jungle Walk (1.5 km).
According to officials, the sanctuary is home to over 25 mammals, 240 reptiles, 86 butterfly species, 250 birds, and 15 species of dragonflies. Neelgai, golden jackals, mongooses, and spotted deer are among the animals found here.

Delhi to roll out GPS-enabled anti-smog gun vehicles in industrial hubs from June
Aiming to improve the city's air quality, the Delhi Government is set to deploy eight GPS-enabled hydraulic anti-smog gun vehicles across key industrial areas of the national capital, with the initiative to continue for ten months, excluding the monsoon period, officials said Friday. The programme will run for 10 months, excluding the monsoon period, with the goal to significantly reduce airborne particulate matter and improve the air quality. Each CNG-operated truck is equipped with an advanced anti-smog gun capable of spraying a fine mist over a horizontal distance of 30 meters and rotating 330 degrees, allowing comprehensive dust suppression, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. He added that the vehicles also feature horizontal sprinklers along their width to spray water directly onto roads, consuming at least 1,500 litres of water per hour. Starting June 2025, the initiative, in collaboration with the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), will be implemented across key industrial areas. Each vehicle will function in two daily shifts- from 3 am to 7 am, and again during non-peak afternoon hours - totaling eight hours per day. "Our government is fully committed to ensuring industrial growth while protecting the environment. We are taking concrete steps to minimise industrial waste and improve infrastructure so that businesses can thrive responsibly," Sirsa said. Currently, the DSIIDC operates eight water sprinklers and three anti-smog guns in the Bawana and Narela industrial zones. The new vehicles will extend coverage to Patparganj, Okhla Phase-III, A Block and S Block Phase-II, Jhilmil, Nangloi, Udyog Vihar, Badli, and Bhorgarh. Two additional vehicles will be kept in reserve for industrial areas managed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the minister added.

Delhi government orders forest department to replace all diesel vehicles with EVs in 60 days
NEW DELHI: In a step towards environmental conservation, the Delhi government has directed for complete replacement of all diesel vehicles operated by the Forest Department with Electric Vehicles (EVs) within the next 60 days. A standing order to this effect was issued by Delhi's Environment, Forest, and Wildlife Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, mandating a full transition to electric mobility in the national capital's forest areas. The directive also strictly prohibits the entry of non-essential, non-electric vehicles -- both government and private -- into protected forest areas with immediate effect. 'Delhi's forests deserve quiet, clean mobility-not smoke and noise,' said Sirsa, emphasising the urgent need to reduce pollution in forest areas and protect the health of wildlife. The Forest Department also has been instructed to conduct a detailed study of its vehicle fleet and submit a comprehensive transition plan within seven days, officials said. The move is part of a broader initiative under the Delhi government's renewed focus on environment-friendly and sustainable development. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government has committed Rs 506 crore towards environmental protection projects, sirsa said according to the statement. 'A greener Delhi with clean air is not a distant dream -- it is our living commitment. By embracing clean technologies and nurturing our forests, we are shaping a healthier, stronger future for every citizen of Delhi,' Sirsa said. Plans are also underway to plant around 70 lakh saplings across the city in an effort to expand Delhi's green cover, enhance air quality, and support urban biodiversity.
