UN Ocean Conference Opens in Nice

World leaders are gathering in Nice, southeastern France, for the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, set to begin on Monday.
French President Emmanuel Macron aims to elevate the event into a global summit to rally stronger international efforts to protect the world's oceans. However, the United States has opted not to attend.
Around 50 heads of state and government officials, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, are expected to attend. The conference will be preceded by a maritime parade on Sunday, held in celebration of World Oceans Day.
This high-level gathering
seeks
to advance global cooperation on marine conservation, sustainable ocean economies, and climate resilience, as ocean health continues to face mounting threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
President Macron's leadership in hosting the conference signals France's growing commitment to marine protection and its ambition to position Europe at the forefront of global environmental governance. The absence of a US delegation, however, may limit the reach of any major international agreements.
The Nice summit is expected to focus on practical strategies for safeguarding biodiversity in international waters, advancing marine renewable energy, and implementing the new High Seas Treaty adopted in 2023.
With ocean health playing a vital role in global climate stability and food security, the outcomes of this conference could shape international marine policy in the years to come.

Turkish Embassy in Cairo celebrates Eid Al-Adha with families from Gaza, Egypt
Basant Ahmed The Turkish Embassy in Cairo, in cooperation with the Palestinian Embassy, the Egyptian "Awladi" Association, and the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (İHH), distributed sacrificial meat to Palestinian and Egyptian families. Ambassador Salih Mutlu ŞEN welcomed the guests during the event and said that unfortunately the deteriorating situation in Gaza spoils the joy of Eid for the Islamic world. Nearly 700 people participated in the solidarity event on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. Ambassador Salih Mutlu ŞEN said that they pray for peace, security, and prosperity for the oppressed brotherly Palestinian people, the entire Islamic world, and all of humanity on this Eid. He expressed their desire to implement relief activities as soon as possible for Palestinians residing in Egypt and those in need in Gaza, in cooperation with the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the Turkish Red Crescent, and Turkish civil society organizations. Over 300,000 Protesters in Rome Demand End to Gaza Massacre
Israa Farhan More than 300,000 people took to the streets of Rome on Saturday to demand an immediate end to what demonstrators described as a massacre in Gaza, marking one of the largest protests in Italy in recent years. The mass rally, organized by a coalition of left- and right-wing opposition parties, was a powerful show of solidarity with the Palestinian people. According to Italian news agency Nova, the demonstration was supported by the Democratic Party (Centre-left), the Five Star Movement (right-wing populist), and the Green Left Alliance. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and peace banners while chanting calls such as Stop the massacre and No more complicity. Italian political leaders addressing the crowd called for an immediate end to what they labelled crimes against Palestinian civilians. They denounced the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right government. Criticism was also directed at Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her government's silence on the situation. Opposition figures urged Meloni to recognize the State of Palestine, asserting that Palestinians deserve the same right to peace and sovereignty as Israelis. Giuseppe Conte, head of the Five Star Movement and Italy's former prime minister, condemned the government's position, calling it a national disgrace. He accused Italy of passively allowing the destruction of Gaza, highlighting the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians, including 16,000 children, and the destruction of schools, hospitals, and homes. Conte labelled the crisis a genocide and firmly rejected claims of antisemitism, stating that criticizing Netanyahu's government is not equivalent to hatred against Jews. Leaders of the Green Alliance echoed this sentiment, condemning the supply of arms to Israel. Nicola Fratoianni, a senior member of the alliance, criticized Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini for travelling to Tel Aviv and shaking hands with Netanyahu, calling the gesture shameful. Fratoianni demanded that Italy and the European Union take concrete action by recognizing Palestinian statehood, suspending the EU-Israel agreement, halting arms deals, and imposing sanctions. Pakistan Appeals for International Intervention to Curb Indian Escalation
Israa Farhan Pakistan has called on global powers to intervene and help resolve key issues with India amid ongoing tensions between the two neighbours. This appeal came from a senior Pakistani delegation that arrived in London on Sunday to present Islamabad's position. Earlier this month, Pakistan launched an extensive lobbying campaign in the United States to share its perspective on the recent conflict with India and counter increasing influence from pro-New Delhi lobbying groups. As part of its global diplomatic effort, the delegation will also visit Brussels, according to Pakistan's Dawn newspaper. The high-profile delegation includes former Foreign Ministers Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Hina Rabbani Khar, Khurram Dastgir, alongside Senators Sherry Rehman, Musadik Malik, Faisal Subzwari, and Bushra Anjum Butt. Senior envoys Jaleel Abbas Gilani and Tahmina Janjua are also part of the group. Khurram Dastgir told Pakistan's Geo News after arriving in the UK that the delegation faced resistance due to a belief among some Americans that further intervention was unnecessary following former US President Donald Trump's mediation of a ceasefire.
