Jai Lucas says he's ready to lead Miami basketball, and his predecessor Jim Larranaga agrees
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Jai Lucas acknowledges his coaching pedigree lacks the vital role of running a team but believes that experience gained through assistant stops at 'Blue Blood' programs has prepared him for the massive undertaking that awaits him.
The 36-year-old Lucas was introduced as the men's basketball coach at Miami. Lucas replaces Jim Larranaga, who retired Dec. 26 after guiding the Hurricanes for 14 seasons. Larranaga attended the introductory press conference as well as Lucas' father, former NBA player and coach John Lucas.
'I've experienced a lot of things except for running a program,' Lucas said. 'But through these experiences that I have gone through and the preparation that I have done, I know I'm prepared and ready to lead.'
Lucas, an assistant with No. 1 Duke for the past three seasons, officially began his new job and will not be part of the Blue Devils' staff during the postseason tournament cycle.
Two years after a Final Four run, the Hurricanes finished the season at 7-24 and an Atlantic Coast Conference-worst 3-17, eliminating them from the conference tournament. They were 11-39 since winning 11 of their first 13 games in 2023-24.
'It was extremely hard to leave (Duke) just because of the relationships you built there,' Lucas said. 'This year we finally had a team that could win it all. You recruited those kids and we have returning players that have been there three years and you build that bond.
'I felt it was my responsibility to get down here as quick as I could and make sure we get started on the right foot and get the program going. That was important to me.'
Before his tenure at Duke, Lucas was an assistant at Kentucky and Texas. Recognized for his recruiting skills, Lucas anticipates a radical team makeover but also is open to retaining Hurricanes players with remaining eligibility.
'It's going to be a big overhaul,' Lucas said. 'My expectation coming in was that I would need to get 13 new players just because that's the way it is. But you never know of the opportunity of people coming back.'
Miami athletic director Dan Radakovich and a search committee remained locked in on Lucas despite the great interest in the job.
'From the outset the committee was impressed with Jai,' Radakovich said. 'His knowledge of the game. Passion for the game and his commitment to building a basketball program the right way.'
Larranaga believes Lucas will successfully adapt to the head-coaching role.
'The great thing for Jai is he played the game and comes from a basketball family,' Larranaga said. 'He has worked for some of the best college basketball coaches in the history of the game. He is very well prepared.'

The final is July 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. What is the format? The Club World Cup has been expanded from seven teams to 32 and will emulate the men's and women's World Cups. Eight groups of four teams will play in a round robin mini league, with the top two advancing to a knockout stage, which runs from the round of 16 through to the final. Where is it being played? Staged in the United States, host cities include Atlanta, Cincinnati, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Which teams have qualified? Some of Europe's biggest teams will take part, including Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, this year's Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain and runner-up Inter Milan. A further $475 million is earned by results in the 63 games, with $2 million paid for winning group stage games, $7.5 million for playing in the round of 16 and $40 million to the team that wins the final. A point to prove The old version of the Club World Cup, which was played yearly, was dominated by European teams in recent times. Only Brazilian team Corinthians broke Europe's winning run in 17 years. An expanded tournament will give more South American teams the chance to test themselves against their European counterparts. Brumbies on high alert for major Hurricanes threat
While much has been made of the breakdown battle, the ACT Brumbies are on high alert for the threat coming from the Hurricanes back-line in their Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final. The Brumbies are out to make amends at GIO Stadium on Saturday's after the Hurricanes snapped an eight-year losing streak in Canberra in round 11 when they cracked a 35-29 win. That scoreline set up their charge to the play-offs, winning six straight. Hurricanes winger Kini Naholo was pivotal in the match, making 10 tackle-busts en route to two tries, but will miss the final after suffering an ACL injury last month with Fatafehi Fineanganofo taking his place. Brumbies fullback Tom Wright said there was still plenty of strike weapons in the visitors' line-up and they couldn't give them any room to move. Peter Umaga-Jensen and Billy Proctor are two of the form centres of the competition and will keep the Brumbies pairing of Len Ikitau and David Feliuai on their toes. He didn't feel they were far off their best against the Crusaders, with a slow start proving costly. "For all the good work that we did we made it bloody hard on ourselves so we need to be a bit sharper as very much more of the same challenge will be coming at us this weekend from the Canes - big ball-carrying, physical guys with the footy, they want to impose themselves," Wright said. "We're looking forward to bringing the game to them."

Frank White shares stadium discrepancy between county, KCMO and MO
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Day three of Missouri's special session went early into Thursday morning as state senators passed a package aimed at keeping the Chiefs and Royals in Missouri in the next decade. Republican State Senator Kurtis Gregory of Saline County and Marshall, Missouri was the bill's sponsor. He needed 17 other State Senators . He got 18, with the final vote being 19-13. Legislator Manny Abarca pleads not guilty to domestic battery charges in Johnson County Later that afternoon though, Jackson County Executive Frank White sent out a bar graph showing that the county contributes $54 million a year annually to the Truman Sports Complex, a county owned piece of property. White says they only get $6 million in return. Kansas City, Missouri on the other hand, according to the county, contributes $2 million but generates $22 million. White says the state of Missouri contributes $3 million, but gets back $40 million a year. Just four days before the April vote in the spring of 2024, White alluded to Mayor Quinton Lucas pitching the Royals the East Crossroads location, even though the team hadn't publicly named that site. The Royals ended up choosing the old Kansas City Star Press Pavilion site in the East Crossroads. The vote, attached with the Chiefs' , lost by 16%. With all of that in mind, FOX4 asked Lucas Thursday whether he felt like he's been under added pressure, talking about the stadium site change. 'No. Not at all. I don't feel pressure on that,' Lucas said. 'I do feel pressure in terms of how do we make sure that we have good packages long term to help keep these teams here?' Now the mayor has talked about Washington Square Park, just east of Union Station, as the new home of the Royals. In May, he told FOX4 if the Royals end up choosing that site, a stadium could be approved there by a Parks Board and City Council vote rather quickly. He also said that that site would not necessarily require a vote of the people.
