Dist admin limits estate working hours to curb human-elephant conflict in Belur
Hassan: With the human-elephant conflict increasing in Hassan's Belur taluk, the district administration suggested that coffee plantation workers avoid entering estates before 9am and after 6pm. There were multiple fatal encounters over recent years, with an alarming rise in incidents reported, especially over the last two years. Hence, deputy commissioner C Sathyabhama issued a warning to curb further tragedies. The DC, in a communique, stated that the labourers could work in coffee estates between 9am and 5pm. She issued the order under the provisions of the Minimum Wages (Central) Rules, 1950. The order is applicable to Arehalli hobli, Bikkodu hobli, and Kasaba hobli in the taluk. The order came into effect immediately, and the DC directed the officers of the forest department and police to alert the residents in the area about the initiative. Usually, plantation workers enter estates for work early in the morning and return home by afternoon or by 4pm. However, Sathyabhama noted that elephant herds prefer moving from one place to another between 6pm and 8am. Most of the human-elephant conflicts occurred during this time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Considering this, the DC passed an order restricting the time for plantation workers. The human-elephant conflict is so severe that several people have lost their lives since Jan 2025. While Dyavamma,74, of Kanakuppe village in Arehalli died in an elephant attack on Feb 13, Anil, 28, of Gujjanahalli died on Feb 24. On March 14, an elephant attacked Susheelamma, 63, of Kogodu village. Chandrakala, 43, of Ankihalli in Bikkodu village died on May 23. However, while planters are accepting the new initiative, the authorities must not escape from their duties by taking new initiatives and must make prompt efforts to prevent human-elephant conflict, said Vishwas, a planter.
