Test flights for flying taxis take place in Abu Dhabi
The prospect of hailing a self-flying air taxi in Abu Dhabi has taken a step closer to reality after test flights took place in the UAE capital.
This trial was a "pivotal step towards integrating urban air mobility into everyday life", Abu Dhabi Media Office said on Friday.
The flights were organised by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council and Abu Dhabi Investment Office, in collaboration with Chinese drone manufacturer EHang and FinTech group Multi Level Group.
The National had previously reported how Ehang had reached an agreement with UAE-based Monarch Airplane Manufacturing to set up an aircraft production plant in Abu Dhabi.
Badr Al Olama, ADIO director general, said: "We're turning future mobility into tangible nation building. With EHang and MLG, we are proving that urban air taxis will be a part of everyday life, here in Abu Dhabi and around the world.
"This is how we diversify our economy, cultivate homegrown capabilities and make the emirate a global leader in next-generation transport.'
The test flights were held to assess the performance of the air taxis and how they handle certain conditions, including performance in Abu Dhabi's hot weather, alongside airspace co-ordination, route planning and vertiport operations.
"It reinforces our shared vision to lead the autonomous aerial mobility sector from the UAE to Africa and the Middle East," said Mohamed Salah, chief executive of Advanced Mobility Hub, a subsidiary of MLG. "This co-operation is a key pillar in positioning Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a global hub for future transportation technologies.
"This achievement represents a major step toward the commercialisation and widespread adoption of low-altitude passenger aviation services.'
The test flights are the latest step towards Abu Dhabi introducing flying taxis to the public.
In March, US air taxi company Archer Aviation said it was working towards launching a fleet of flying taxis before the end of the year, viewing the Gulf as the perfect launch pad to demonstrate its vehicles to the rest of the world.
Abu Dhabi Aviation confirmed at the time an agreement was made to introduce the first fleet of Archer's Midnight electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft this year.

Here's what you need to know and how to determine if you qualify. The Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment continues to support Dubai citizens with housing services through two main options: housing grants and housing loans. Each option is designed to meet the needs of applicants based on their income, marital status, and living conditions. According to the Establishment's website, its mission is to provide housing services to those eligible, prioritising and addressing their needs, ensuring a decent life for them, and preserving the characteristics and benefits of the residential communities it establishes. Who Can Apply? Dubai citizens can apply for a grant or loan, subject to several eligibility criteria. Housing grants are generally provided to widows, divorcees with children, people of determination, and low-income families who do not own a property registered in their name in Dubai or other emirates. The applicant must be an Emirati holding a Dubai passport, and the property must be located in Dubai. On the other hand, housing loans are typically granted to citizens with a stable income who are able to repay the loan over a period of time. Applicants must be at least 22 years old, employed in the government or private sector, or self-employed, with proof of income. They must not have previously received housing support from federal or local entities. Married applicants, especially those with children, are given priority for both types of support. In some cases, separated or divorced individuals may apply jointly or individually, depending on the custody status and court rulings. According to WAM, the Foundation's responsibilities include allocating residential land, constructing housing and residential complexes, allocating them to beneficiaries, leasing them, providing soft loans and financial grants necessary for the construction and purchase of housing, and covering the costs of maintenance, additions, or replacement. The Foundation also rehabilitates existing housing for citizens in older areas of the emirate, resettling them in these areas, improving housing services, and undertaking all necessary actions, including the purchase, ownership, reconstruction, or renovation of housing, in coordination with relevant government agencies. Required documents Applicants must prepare a set of official documents, including: A copy of their Emirates ID card and family book Proof of income (such as a salary certificate or bank statement) A valid land title deed or signed approval (if applying for construction support) Marriage certificate (if applicable) Court documents in the event of divorce or custody Medical reports if applying under the category of people with special needs All documents must be submitted through official channels and updated continuously throughout the process. Financial details Eligibility is also affected by the applicant's income. While there is no fixed minimum, grants are typically awarded to those with a monthly income of less than Dh15,000, while loans are granted to those with incomes above this limit, based on their ability to repay. The maximum support provided by the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment can reach up to Dh1 million, depending on the type of housing product and the assessment of the case. Financial loans are granted to beneficiaries pursuant to a contract concluded between the Establishment and the beneficiary. This contract specifies the loan amount and its purpose, the method, amount, and duration of the collection guarantee, and any other conditions the Establishment deems appropriate. Regarding collection, financial loans are collected in monthly installments, the amount of which is determined according to regulations and standards. The beneficiary's monthly income is taken into account when determining the installment amount, and the full loan repayment period must not exceed twenty-five years. How to apply The process begins by creating an account on the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment's smart platform or using the Dubai Now app. Applicants must complete the online application form and upload all necessary documents. After submitting the application, it undergoes an initial review phase, followed by a technical and financial evaluation. The Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment also provides advisory support for those unsure of which service is right for them. The Khaleej Times recently reported that the Foundation had implemented a training initiative for citizens on efficient and sustainable housing construction. Participants were provided with a detailed guide covering housing services, construction guidelines, and smart systems, as well as sustainable home management practices. They also learned how to estimate construction costs, determine an appropriate budget, choose the right home dimensions, and align the home design with the family's needs and financial resources. In addition, participants were introduced to the differences between building a new home and purchasing a ready-made home, as well as an overview of available financing options. Types of housing support The Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment offers a variety of housing grants and loans, designed to meet the various stages of a citizen's housing search journey. Dubai: Jordan fans hope to travel to North America to support their team at 2026 World Cup
Euphoric Jordanian expats in the UAE are hoping to take the long flight to North America following their team's historic Fifa World Cup qualification. Jordan last week became the first Arab team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup which will be played in the US, Canada and Mexico. Twelve years after their heartbreaking defeat to a star-studded Uruguay team in the inter-continental playoffs which denied them a chance to play in the 2014 World Cup, Jordan's greatest footballing dream has finally come true. 'As a Jordanian and as an Arab seeing our national team qualify for the World Cup is a moment of indescribable pride,' said Sharjah resident Osama Alrefaee. 'I was surrounded by friends and family, and as soon as the final whistle blew, we burst into cheers, hugs, and happy tears.' Alrefaee says it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to cheer for his team in North America next year. 'If I have the chance, I'll be there waving the Jordanian flag with pride. Supporting the team in person on such a global stage would be a dream come true,' he said. Passion for football Abu Dhabi resident Hiba Al Mubarak knows what it's like to be in a World Cup, having attended a few matches in Qatar 2022. But now supporting Jordan from the stands next year in North America will be the greatest moment of her life. 'Every Jordanian is so proud that we have become the first Arab team to qualify for the next World Cup. I am sure the whole country would want to be at the World Cup next year,' she said. 'But going to a World Cup is very expensive, not every family can afford it. I was in Qatar for a few matches in 2022. It's not easy.' Having said that, Hiba admitted that some of her compatriots could be inspired by what a lot of Argentinian fans did at the Qatar World Cup. 'I met a few Argentinian fans and I was truly amazed by their passion for the game. A lot of them said they took loans and some of them even sold their personal belongings to be able to travel to Qatar,' she said. 'They are so passionate about football. For them, it's more than a game. And as a Jordanian, I know that our people are also very passionate about football. So, you never know, a few of them can do the same to watch the World Cup in North America next year.' Only Jordan Until the 2022 World Cup, Dubai resident Hamza Raqqad had only supported one team, England. 'I have always supported them because my mother is English. But my father is Jordanian,' said Hamza who watched Jordan's decisive win over Oman in the qualifier last week at a Jordanian café in Dubai. Now next year, Hamza will support only Jordan even if they are drawn in the same group with England. 'There will be no England next year for me. Only Jordan,' he said. 'I was raised in Jordan and it's difficult not to be emotional now. When they put the national flags of the qualified teams on the Fifa website, I saw the Jordanian flag and it filled me with so much pride.' Unlike the other Jordanian expats, Fahed Zoumot's perspective was different. The 40-year-old Dubai resident was a former international cager, having played for the Jordanian national basketball team. 'I know the responsibility you have on your shoulders when you wear the national team jersey and the sacrifices it takes to give your best in every match and every training session for your country,' said Zoumot who admired the dazzling skills of Brazilian football icons Romario and Ronaldinho. 'Basketball is popular in Jordan, but football is massive. So what this team has done is just incredible because it was such a tough qualifying campaign. To be able to enjoy this moment is so special now, especially after that 2013 heartbreak against Uruguay,' he said. Yasser Abdalrahman was at the stadium in Amman when Uruguay broke Jordanian hearts in 2013 by beating them 5-0 in the playoff. 'I was at the stadium and almost in tears after our team lost. It was heartbreaking. So now after all the years of hurt, I cannot express my joy of seeing my team reach the World Cup,' said Yasser, an influencer who socializes with Ali Alwan and Yazan Al Naimat, two of the stars of the team that made history. 'I know a lot of the players, they are my friends. So I am hoping that I can travel next year to the US and cheer them on.'
