Candace Parker is the latest former basketball star to find success in sports media, securing fanfare for her deep knowledge of the game and versatility to complexly analyze both the NBA, WNBA, and college basketball. In an appearance on No Offseason: The Athletic Women's Basketball Show, Parker talked about WNBA coverage and the fairness of critiquing WNBA players.
'For a long time media has been the driving force behind people watching the WNBA. You had to handle it with white gloves because you couldn't critique something that was being critiqued in society for that long. So but now I think there's a difference in handling it with white gloves and loving it and being passionate. There's an honesty, authenticity, and there's a truth that you're owed to people. You can't lie to viewers, you can't lie what you see.'
She continued, 'So we're saying 'Man that's an unbelievable play.' Like okay or, 'Yeah I don't know what she was doing there.' No, like the viewers see that she made a turnover or that maybe she needs to work on going to her left. I wholeheartedly believe, and not attacking anybody, I don't think you should ever attack anybody personally their character who they are, but you can critique what they're doing.'
In her brief media career, Parker has led in showing that an analyst or journalist can be critical without being personal as her opinions on players and teams across the basketball landscape are well respected. Candace Parker also evoked Inside The NBA, in her comments as she cites that they don't hold back on their critiques of players.

'In the same sense that the NBA on TNT was a first of its kind and Ernie, Shaq, Chuck, and Kenny being honest and real about what's going on and understanding the balance of entertainment that you want to bring to the viewers but also honesty I think that's the key.'
It's clear that Parker wants honesty in takes about basketball but respect for the players that are the subject of critique and opinion. That is absolutely reasonable and should be the standard across all sports coverage.

Both players spoke about the firing and what Thibodeau meant to them. 'We want to give a shoutout to Thibs, man, you know, especially for myself,' Hart started. 'He helped make me into the player I am. I had a lot of instability in the early part of my career and he gave me that stability and that opportunity to flourish as a player in the league, a starter in the league, so I'm always going to be forever grateful for him. "This is always a tough part of the NBA because you grow relationships not just on the court but off the court and personal relationships, so I always got love for him. It's always tough when there's a coaching change." Brunson, who was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks and only had a coach change on him once when Rick Carlisle resigned to sign with the Pacers, so this is uncharted territory for the All-Star guard. Brunson chose to highlight what Thibodeau has done for his career since signing with New York. Advertisement 'This is my first firing. Obviously, I've known him my entire life, but I remember having conversations and moments with him in 8th grade when we moved to Chicago. And to see where he helped me become two-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA. The things he's done for me individually, I'm so grateful for," Brunson said. "He had that confidence in me that I knew I had, but it's great to see someone push me to be better…. to have Thibs, and to do what he did for my career, I'm so grateful and thankful for. Not enough things can be said about what he's meant to myself and my career.' When both were asked if they had any inkling that the firing would happen or if Thibodeau was on the hot seat, Hart who has had multiple coaching changes in his eight-year career, put it best. "We had a really good year. It didn't end how we wanted it to end. Sometimes when the season doesn't end the way you expect it to, there's always changes. Whether that's coaches, players," Hart said. "Thibs is my sixth coach in eight years. The NBA coaching profession is tough. Whenever you don't finish the way you expect, there's always gonna be changes. That one was a tough one. There should be nothing but praise for him and his time in New York.' 'I agree. 100 percent,' Brunson responded. Advertisement Thibodeau joined the Knicks ahead of the 2019-20 season, and in five seasons, he amassed a 226-174 record in the regular season, going 24-23 in the playoffs. He coached the Knicks to the playoffs in four of his five seasons, had back-to-back 50-win seasons and took New York to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. Whoever becomes the next coach of the Knicks will have big shoes to fill. "[Thibodeau] took that job when the Knicks were just buns," Hart, who was traded to the Knicks in 2023, said. "They were 20 wins. He got that job for five years, made the playoffs in four years, first Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years. He helped Knicks basketball go back to the top level in the league. He should get a lot of credit for the foundation that he built."

WNBA's TV ratings drop with Fever's Caitlin Clark sidelined due to injury: report
The WNBA has seen a significant drop in TV ratings while Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark remains sidelined with a quad injury. Clark has missed five straight games after she strained a quadriceps during the Fever's 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty last month. Initially, she was expected to miss two weeks, but the second-year guard has yet to be cleared for Saturday's game against the Liberty, which will mark three weeks. Her absence on the court has not only hurt the Fever. It's hurt the WNBA's TV ratings. USA Today reported Thursday that, according to Nielsen data, nationally televised WNBA viewership is down 55% since Clark was injured May 24. The report said nationally televised Fever games are also down 53%. OutKick clarified those numbers, reporting that of the four previous games Clark played in, two were aired on CBS and ABC. A third was broadcast on NBA TV, and a fourth was not rated by Nielsen because it was broadcast on Amazon Prime. Three of the four Fever games after Clark was injured were aired on either NBA TV or ION. And the Fever's most recent game against the Chicago Sky drew an average of 1.92 million viewers, the WNBA announced Tuesday. Those numbers reflect the third-highest viewership for a game carried by CBS. It was also a big increase over the network's average regular season game viewership. But it was a drop from the season opener between those two teams. Fever head coach Stephanie White said Monday the team is ready for Clark to start "ramping back up," but she did not say if she was cleared yet for basketball activities. White added Thursday that Clark and Sophie Cunningham, who's been sidelined since May 30, had "limited" reps during practice.
