SEC amps up fines to $500,000 for rushing field, storming court
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is ratcheting up penalties on schools whose fans storm the field or rush the court, doing away with an escalating fine system and now charging $500,000 per incident.
'The motivation was 'field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time,'' commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday in announcing the decision. 'The random nature of, if you're the one getting rushed, it doesn't feel good. It might be the first time (it happened) there, but it might be your sixth time in a row, literally.'
The conference also has the authority to wave the fine if the visiting team and officials are allowed to get to the locker room before fans descend.
The new policy replaces an old one that called for an escalating fine structure that started with $100,000 for the first offense, raised to $250,000 for the second then hit $500,000 for the third and subsequent incidents.
The SEC first instituted a fine structure for field storming in 2004, but it didn't stop the problem.
In 2022, Tennessee fans stormed the field after ending a 15-game losing streak to Alabama. But things became congested and some of the Crimson Tide players were trapped; a video surfaced of a Tide player thrusting his arm toward a woman's head as he tried to get off the field.
Last year, Vanderbilt beat Alabama at home, triggering fans to rush the field, tear down the goalposts and parade them to the Cumberland River. The Commodores were fined $100,000 and, per SEC policy, that money went to Alabama, which also received $100,000 for an incident after a loss at Tennessee last season.
Vanderbilt got fined twice more last basketball season, the last of which cost $500,000.
'We try to set some expectations to the fan base of 'We'll welcome your celebration, but let's let the team from the visiting institution and the officials depart,'" Sankey said.

(AP Photo/Lynne Sladky) MIAMI (AP) — Hunter Goodman homered twice, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the fifth inning, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Miami Marlins 6-4 on Monday night to snap their fourth eight-game losing streak of the season. It was the 10th win against 50 losses for the Rockies, who had already wrapped up the worst 60-game start in the modern era (since 1901). The 1904 Washington Senators and 1932 Boston Red Sox both opened 11-49. Advertisement Goodman had a two-out single in the first off Max Meyer, and Thairo Estrada followed with an RBI double to give Colorado the lead. Goodman was charged with an error in the bottom half when he dropped a throw at home plate, allowing the tying run to score. Otto Lopez added an RBI single off Germán Márquez, and a sacrifice fly by Eric Wagaman gave Miami a 3-1 lead. Jesús Sánchez's run-scoring double made it 4-1 in the second. Goodman homered in the third, and Tyler Freeman's two-out RBI single in the fourth got the Rockies within a run. Ezequiel Tovar singled leading off the fifth and Goodman followed with his ninth homer for a 5-4 advantage. Texas Tech ends Oklahoma's 4-year run as Women's College World Series champ with walk-off 3-2 win
Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma's run of four straight Women's College World Series titles ended when Lauren Allred's walk-off sacrifice fly gave Texas Tech a 3-2 victory in the semifinals on Monday night. Coach Patty Gasso's Sooners (52-9) were down to their last strike in the top of the seventh inning when Abigale Dayton summoned a bit of magic, hitting a tying two-run homer against Red Raiders ace NiJaree Canady. It was just her third longball of the season. But the Red Raiders (53-12) responded quickly in the bottom half. Mihyia Davis singled with one out and Hailey Toney followed with a double. Allred hit a flyball to right field and Sydney Barker's throw to the plate was wide, allowing Davis to score easily. Texas Tech, in its first trip to the WCWS, will play Texas in the best-of-three championship series starting Wednesday. The Longhorns reached the finals for the third time in the past four years. They lost to Oklahoma in 2022 and 2024. Oklahoma had won nine straight elimination games. Canady lost the shutout but got the win. She is the two-time reigning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pitcher of the Year and was the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year last season.
