Milton Keynes man spends 50 years recreating Theremin spy bug

BBC News17-05-2025

A specialist in counter surveillance who spent 50 years recreating a "totally unique" 1940s covert listening device has had a documentary made about his life's work.It was in the 1970s that John Little first learnt about The Thing - a gadget that had been hidden in a hand-carved ceremonial seal that the then-USSR had given to the US in 1945. The 79-year-old said he was so "fascinated" by it that he became determined to make a new version of the bug, which had no wires or batteries and had passed unnoticed in the office of the US ambassador in Moscow. The documentary, called The Thing, will preview at the National Museum of Computing, at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire, on Saturday.
Mr Little used to be a telephone engineer from Lowestoft in Suffolk before he moved to Bletchley Park and he still lives in the Milton Keynes area.He said he had his 56 years of experience in technical surveillance counter measures (TSCM) , said he was first introduced to The Thing in 1975 when he worked for the British Foreign Office, and was on a radio monitoring course. In 1945, a large wooden seal was presented to the US ambassador, Averell Harriman, and it stayed on his embassy office in the Russian capital for seven years, listening to his conversations."I was fascinated. It's totally unique and I was determined I was going to make one of those and make it work, and I did... but it took a long while," Mr Little said. "It was like no other surveillance device and even today it's looked at as a work of absolute genius."The original was made by the Russian inventor, Leon Theremin, who also created the musical instrument the theremin, which could be played without being touched - creating an eerie sound.
Emily Barnard, a partner of St Albans based Omph Creative, who made the film with Ben Killner, said Mr Little's work was "mind blowing". "It was going to be a short video to put on YouTube, but we just realised how momentous this was and a documentary story needed to be told."She said the device was called The Thing because no-one knew what it was, how it worked and it led to "scandal, espionage and political wrangling on a global scale". "John is very humble, but he's also a genius like Leon Theremin," she said. "Sometimes technology doesn't need to be complex; it needs to be simple and clever and go under the radar and not be noticed."
Mr Little said that after working on The Thing recreation, he started on "the 2024 version". "This one incorporates internet, 4G, sat-phone technology, which gives us the ability to remote control the system so now it has a range of 12,500 miles - half way round the Earth," he said. "I'm sure if Leon was still alive he would do that."He said his work was only possible due to a team of about 10 people, including Greg Williams and John Carter. "You can't retire from this," he added. The film's premiere sold out within 48 hours and another screening was being planned for 27 September, Ms Barnard added.

Bikini-clad Courtney Stodden devours a plant-based patty to celebrate National Veggie Burger Day

Courtney Stodden drew strong reaction while absolutely sizzling as she celebrated National Veggie Burger Day. The model, 30, devoured a plant-based patty in a sexy mesh bikini as she basked in the sunshine against a barbeque. The juicy burger was used as a prop as Courtney shared a duo of seductive photos, including one of her arching her back seductively. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO Courtney - who is nonbinary and uses she/her and they/them pronouns interchangeably - boasted her decision to go plant-based as 'sexy AF'. 'It's National Veggie Burger Day, and we're serving plant-based realness hotter than the grill, honey,' Courtney, who often poses in swimsuits, began in the caption of the Thursday post. 'Being a woman who chooses compassion with a side of sass? That's power. That's control. That's main character energy. We're not just eating clean — we're eating consciously, seductively, and with the full force of our feminine fire. A veggie burger isn't just a patty - it's a whole damn statement. 'It's 'I don't need meat to be fierce.' It's 'Yes, I'll take the avocado, and no, I won't apologize for it.' It's juicy, messy, bold, and unapologetically good for your body and the planet. 'Whether you're rocking heels or hoodies, your choice to eat plant-based is sexy AF - because nothing's hotter than a woman who gives a damn. 'So spice up your ketchup game, and take a big, bossy bite of that veggie burger. Let the juices drip like you run the world - because, babe, you do. 'Salty. Sultry. Sustainable. For the baddies with brains, hearts, and a plant-powered bite.' The post contained two sultry bikini snaps of Courtney, and a video of the star taking a messy yet satisfying bite out of the burger. The post earned the praise from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), whom commented: 'Preach, vegan queen (applause and crown emojis) What a beautiful description of the fierce radiance that shines within us when we make compassionate choices. Keep on changing the world and saving animals, one veggie burger at a time (burger emoji).' 'I love my peta family,' Courtney replied. Courtney is a long-time supporter of PETA and in 2014 even served veggie hotdogs wearing a miniscule lettuce bikini in Washington, D.C. 'Going vegetarian made me feel great inside and out, and I'm eager to help PETA inspire people on Capitol Hill to give vegetarian food a try,' the starlet stated in a PETA media alert at the time. She added: 'Veggie dogs are delicious and kinder to animals, the environment, and our health than artery-clogging, meaty hot dogs are. The choice is easy to make!' Courtney drew other strong reaction even besides PETA as she had plenty of support in the comments section of the post. Another wrote: 'U make those look so out for veggie patties.'

American Pie star Jason Biggs admits to snorting cocaine out of a trash can

American Pie star Jason Biggs has opened up about his past battle with drugs and alcohol - which saw him doing cocaine out of a trash can. The actor, 47, admitted to going on cocaine benders in a brutally honest interview on the Well With Arielle Lorre podcast this week. He said: 'I knew when I needed to call the coke dealer because I was gonna drink too much, and how much Ambien to take or benzos to take based on how much coke I'd had so I'd come down but hopefully not die.' After shooting to fame at 19 in the American Pie franchise, Biggs boasted that he had, 'money in the bank, coke in my pocket and nobody saying no to me.' He added: 'It was [amazing] but I was also aware of crazy that was.' The actor admitted to getting so blacked out during coke and booze-fueled benders that he'd forget what he did the night before. Sharing how dark his addiction became, Biggs admitted to hiding his drug use from his wife Jenny Mollen, who he married in 2008. He added: 'I was drinking a lot by myself and using a lot by myself and not telling my wife. 'I took advantage of her... I felt like I was able to put things past her and I did,' he then admitted that he would stay up into the early hours of the morning drinking alcohol and doing coke after his wife went to bed. At his lowest point, Biggs found himself doing drugs out of a trash can. Sharing the unbelievable story, the actor said that he was up snorting cocaine at 4am while his wife slept when he decided to throw out the bag, which still had some coke in it, to make himself stop. He threw the bag inside the trash in his kitchen and tried to go to bed, only to return fifteen minutes later to dig it out and do another line. In his second attempt to discard the bag, he went outside and put it in the large trash bins out the front of his Hollywood home. He initially planned to pop an Ambien and go to sleep, but soon the temptation of another bump became too much to resist. Biggs said: 'I went outside and I climbed into the bin and got the bag of coke out and went upstairs and did another line.' Fed up with his behavior, Biggs then got into his car and drove down Sunset Boulevard until he found a random house. Rifling through their garbage, the star found a discarded Starbucks cup with some coffee left in it at the bottom. He put the bag of cocaine inside and closed the lid, before tossing the filthy cup back into the bin and leaving. Biggs drove home, but turned the car around and returned to the garbage to fish the bag of coke out of the cup so he could do another line. He said: 'I drove back home and finished the bag of coke. 'I could've just easily opened the baggie and dumped it down the toilet, but I didn't. I knew I was gonna finish that bag the moment I got it, but I kept playing this game with myself.' The father-of-two became sober in 2017 and celebrated his first year of sobriety with a touching post in 2018. At the time, he wrote: 'I first tried to get sober over 5 years ago, when the weight of my obsession with booze and drugs became too heavy for me to handle. 'Turns out this sh*t is hard. After some fits and starts, I've managed to put together one year of sobriety. I'm as proud of it as anything in my life. 'If you're struggling, know there's help. Don't be ashamed. We can do this.'
