Baby name expert shares six names parents should never give their child
Two baby name consultants have revealed the half-dozen names they believe are 'old-fashioned' and should be avoided by new parents when choosing a the perfect name for their newborn
Choosing a name that your newborn will happily use for the rest of their lives can be tricky, but two baby name consultants have shared six old-fashioned names that new parents might want to avoid.
British professional baby namer SJ Strum and Boston-based consultant Colleen Slagen have compiled a list of names they recommend to clients, but there are a select few they suggest bypassing.
Colleen advises against sturdy, old-school monikers like Linda, Karen, and Janet, which she believes are falling out of fashion, while SJ warns parents off what she terms "1990s norm-core dad names" such as Gary, Stuart, and Ian.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, SJ described pregnancy as "such a bamboozling time. She added that picking a name is just one of the overwhelming number of decisions expectant parents face. She believes that enlisting an expert to choose a baby's name can transform the process into "one of the most joyous and bonding parts of your pregnancy."
"Couples want a name that tells their story," she says, delving into personal details such as hobbies, university studies, and where they first met to find the perfect fit.
SJ also mentioned receiving last-minute messages from delivery rooms, with parents desperate for naming assistance. She offers sage advice for resolving deadlocks when one parent is fixated on a name the other detests.
If your partner is fond of a boys' name you simply cannot abide, SJ suggests claiming it's the name of an ex. "That normally gets them off it pretty quick," she reveals.
For those pondering what name to bestow upon a bouncing baby girl, sticking with the classics such as Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, or Sofia is a solid choice; James, Henry, Lucas, or William hold the same charm for boys.
On the other hand, SJ points out some fresh twists in naming trends: "'Nature names are becoming popular: River is rising up the ranks. I'm also seeing a lot of whimsical names that hark back to virtues, such as Sage."
Following the deaths of celebrities or other notable individuals, there's a tendency for their names to surge in popularity, SJ says: "We saw lots of variations on Elizabeth after the late Queen passed away, and Bowie after David died in 2016."
Before settling on a potential name, SJ stresses the importance of trying it out: "What does it feel like to say it out loud?".
She underscores practical considerations with a personal anecdote: "Will you be asked to spell it in a coffee shop? I had a client who loved the name Persephone, but did the coffee shop test and decided it was far too much of a mouthful."

Although Oasis are only performing their former hits this summer, 88% of fans would love to see the Gallaghers make new music. Not even the great British weather will put fans off, with 77% saying they'd watch Oasis perform come rain or shine. In fact, they'd be willing to stand in a downpour for an average of 9 hours just to see the Gallaghers reunite live. Last year, Miquita revealed she was 'attending therapy sessions drunk' at the height of her alcoholism as she candidly discussed her struggle. The presenter previously admitted to 'losing everything' to bankruptcy and booze when she was unable to pay a £174,000 tax bill back in 2012. Speaking her Miss Me? podcast, she opened up about their experiences with therapy. One listener called in to asked if there was a particular event that made them start therapy. Miquita admitted: 'I started going to a therapist when I was deep in my alcoholism in my early thirties and it didn't work because I was going to my sessions drunk. 'That is a whole different level of performative therapy. I was trying to pretend that I hadn't been drinking.' She continued: 'That really did feel pointless and because of how awful I realised that going to therapy drunk was that led me to stop drinking for a little bit. 'But then I found a really good therapist who did help me change my life, and continue to change my life.' Addressing her bankruptcy on BBC Three programme Young, British & Broke in 2013, she said she was so ashamed about her financial troubles that she didn't tell anybody for two years. She said: 'At 17 I was earning money I didn't know how to handle and before I knew it I owed thousands to the taxman. 'I just felt like I couldn't breathe and that I was sinking. I was so scared about my future and I didn't tell anyone for 2 years. 'When I was declared bankrupt it felt like I was in a financial mess I would never get out of.' Lily and Miquita grew up in the limelight, and spent their younger years partying incessantly, something which they have openly discussed on their podcast. They have been there for each other through many tough times but one area where they haven't been so loyal is men. On their podcast Miquita spoke of a particularly sticky time, which came before Lily's music fame, when the presenter had a crush. Taking listeners back to the early noughties when she was hosting Popworld, Channel 4's Sunday morning music show, Miquita said: 'There was a pop star. 'I found out that he fancied me. I told Lily that I liked him. Cue, Lily gets herself to a festival in Japan and seduces him.' Lily hadn't broken through as an artist yet so instead got a job in artist relations to get backstage for the gig. The conversation on their podcast got tense as Lily questioned whether Miquita had ever made her feelings clear for the man. Lily admitted she flew to Japan to 'lock that one in', adding: 'I fancied him, so I was getting mine. By the way, I think pop stars are fair game, like, I don't care.' The pair laughed as they recalled the incident, however Miquita revealed that she didn't speak to Lily for six months after it happened.
