ENG vs IND: Rishabh Pant relieved he won't face Anderson-Broad duo in England Tests
India's newly-appointed Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant shared a light-hearted take on the upcoming England series, admitting that he feels a sense of relief not having to face the formidable pace duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. With both veterans now retired, Pant joked that the pressure on India's batters will be slightly less this summer. This summer's England series marks a significant transition for the hosts, as it will be the first in years without either James Anderson or Stuart Broad in the playing XI. Broad stepped away from international cricket following the 2023 Ashes and has since moved into commentary. Anderson, meanwhile, played his final Test during the first match of the 2024 West Indies series. While he has taken up a behind-the-scenes role in mentoring and coaching within the England camp, his presence as a bowler will be missed on the field.advertisementSpeaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Headingley Test on June 18, Pant acknowledged the impact Anderson and Broad had on world cricket and expressed that it would be somewhat comforting not to face them this time around.
'Definitely, it feels so good when both (Anderson and Broad) are not there. Because coming from the last two tours, they've been there for England for so many years and I've only come for two tours. But at the same time, they have enough ammunition as an England bowling line-up,' Pant said in the pre-match press conference.'We don't want to take anyone lightly because our team is also young. They're still looking to develop themselves. But at the same time, we've got to play our cricket and respect the bowlers and opposition where it needs it,' he added.advertisementPant, now one of the senior-most players in India's Test side, has taken on additional responsibility following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format. With the leadership baton being passed to the younger generation, Pant finds himself as a key figure both on and off the field.Despite Anderson and Broad's absence, England's bowling attack remains dangerous. The likes of Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir form a promising unit that could trouble India in home conditions. Pant is expected to play a central role in countering England's bowlers, especially if the top order faces early setbacks. With the series being a crucial part of the World Test Championship cycle, all eyes will be on how Pant handles both the bat and the leadership mantle in what promises to be a challenging but exciting contest.

ICC ready for four-day Tests in 27–29 WTC cycle
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is ready to sanction four-day Tests for smaller nations in the 2027–29 World Test Championship cycle, but India, Australia and England can still play the traditional five-day matches, according to a report here. The move to reduce matches by one day would be a significant change and can help smaller nations to play more Tests and longer series. 'During discussions last week at the WTC final at Lord's, the ICC chair, Jay Shah, is understood to have expressed his support for four-day Tests, with a view to sanctioning them in time for the 2027–29 WTC cycle,' a report in 'The Guardian' newspaper said. 'England, Australia and India would still be permitted to schedule five-Test series of five-day matches for the Ashes, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the newly named Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, the first iteration of which begins with the first Test between England and India at Headingley on Friday.'

Not Karun Nair! Dinesh Karthik Wants 23-Year-Old To Bat At No. 3 For India Vs England
Dinesh Karthik has suggested Sai Sudharsan at No. 3 and Karun Nair at No. 6 for India's first Test against England, with Shardul Thakur in the playing XI. Star India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has said that he would like Sai Sudharsan to bat at No. 3 for India, with Karun Nair down at 6 when India take on England in the first of their five-match Test series at Leeds on June 20, adding that Shardul Thakur would pip Nitish Kumar Reddy to the playing XI. The Indian team management is faced with a huge selection conundrum regarding the batting unit after the recent retirements of Rohit Sharma and ace batter Virat Kohli. The departures of the star duo have led to some significant shuffles in the batting order. Karthik has backed Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to continue their success from the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Skipper Shubman Gill and Pant were named in the middle order by Karthik, while the returning Nair was slotted in at No. 6. Jaiswal, Rahul, Sudharsan, Gill, Pant, Nair, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul formed Karthik's top 7 for the Headingley Test. Pant has already confirmed that he would be batting at No. 5 while Gill takes over the No. 4 slot. 'Jaiswal looks like a man who is ready for a challenge like this. At No.3, Sai Sudharsan, I feel he has done outstandingly well in white-ball cricket, IPL and in the limited opportunities he has had for India as well," Karthik said while speaking on a video on his Instagram handle. 'Can he (Sudharsan) convert that form into red-ball cricket as well? Shubman Gill, who is going to take over the mantle from the King. That's a big one, but he knows. He wants to win that dressing room," Karthik said. 'If he gets going with the bat and shows the form he has shown in white-ball cricket, the world is his oyster. At No.8, I think Shardul Thakur is going to be the man. He is a bowling all-rounder, but his batting is going to be useful," Karthik added. England have already named their playing XI for their series opener. Experienced pace bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes returned to the line-up while Ollie Pope was preferred over Jacob Bethell.

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant confirms player to take number four spot after Virat Kohli's retirement
Leeds [UK], June 18 (ANI): India vice-captain Rishabh Pant announced that he will continue to stick to the number five in the upcoming five high-stakes Tests against England, while newly-crowned Test captain Shubman Gill will take stalwart Virat Kohli's number four spot in the format. After Virat bid adieu to the Test format last month, speculations were heavily revolving around who would take up the mantle of bearing the responsibility of playing at number four, a spot that has been held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Recent reports placed Gill as the forerunner, and the rumours turned into reality. A couple of days before the series opener at Headingley, Pant confirmed that the 25-year-old will drop from number three and embrace a new role in the red-ball setup. 'I think there is still discussion going on, who's going to play three, but definitely four and five are fixed. I think Shubman is going to bat at number four, and I am going to stick to number five as of now, and the rest, we are going to keep on discussing that,' Pant said during a press conference on Wednesday. While playing at number three, Shubman featured in 17 matches and garnered 1,019 runs at 37.74, with three centuries and as many fifties, all coming on home turf. In overseas conditions, Gill has featured in seven Tests and managed just 212 runs at 19.27. Besides captaincy, Gill will have to take the legacy of the number four spot to a new level, considering how Virat and Tendulkar made the position their own. Gill will have some experienced stars around him and Pant serving as his deputy throughout the five Tests. The explosive southpaw believes the camaraderie he shares with Gill off the field and the comfort zone they share will be 'really special.' 'I think Shubman and I have good camaraderie, especially off the field. If you are good friends off the field, it eventually comes on the field. It is better for cricket always, and that is something I have always believed. Me and him gel really well together. The kind of comfort zone we have with each other, I think that will be really special,' he added. India's squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana England Playing XI for the 1st Test against India: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.
