
Archaeologists uncovered a cache of 1.5 million-year-old bone tools. They're trying to determine who made them
Archaeologists have uncovered a collection of bone tools in northern Tanzania that were shaped by ancient human ancestors 1.5 million years ago, making them the oldest known bone tools by about 1 million years, according to new research.
Researchers have unearthed stone tools that date back to at least 3.3 million years ago, but before this discovery, the oldest known bone tools were found at European sites believed to be 250,000 to 500,000 years old.
The 27 fragments of limb bones, most from hippopotamuses and elephants, show evidence of having been sharpened and shaped, likely with the aid of stone pieces. Some of the bones reach up to nearly 15 inches (38 centimeters) long.
The bone tools, which all appear to have been systematically produced in the same style as one another, were found in Tanzania's Olduvai Gorge. The site is also where archaeologists have previously unearthed artifacts related to some of the first stone tools crafted by early hominins, or human ancestors who walked upright.
The new findings, presented in a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, suggest that our ancient human relatives applied the same techniques they used to make stone tools to specific bones they selected from large mammals. Researchers believe the tools are evidence that hominins long ago were capable of abstract reasoning, or the ability to think critically by identifying patterns and making connections.
'This expansion of technological potential indicates advances in the cognitive abilities and mental structures of these hominins, who knew how to incorporate technical innovations by adapting their knowledge of stone work to the manipulation of bone remains,' said lead study author Dr. Ignacio de la Torre, scientist at the Spanish National Research Council's Institute of History and codirector of the Olduvai Gorge Archaeology Project, in a statement.
Windows into human evolution
Olduvai Gorge is in East Africa, which is home to some of the earliest evidence of both tool production and use among early human ancestors. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site often referred to as the 'Cradle of Humankind' and is 'renowned for its unparalleled contribution to our understanding of early human evolution,' said study coauthor Jackson Njau, associate professor in the department of Earth and atmospheric sciences at Indiana University.
'As a Tanzanian native, I've been captivated since my high school days by the groundbreaking discoveries made at renowned Olduvai Gorge site in northern Tanzania,' Njau said. 'The iconic work of the famous archaeologists Drs. Louis and Mary Leakey, which discovered early human fossils … and the world's first human stone tools ignited my fascination and fueled the dreams of countless young students, myself included, who aspired to follow in their footsteps.'
The site has a timeline spanning 2 million to 20,000 years ago, and researchers have uncovered the remains of ancient human ancestors such as Homo habilis, Homo erectus and prehistoric Homo sapiens, or modern humans, he said. The archaeological record also includes cultural advancements and the evolution of toolmaking, Njau added.
During the Oldowan age, a time period named for stone artifacts found in the gorge, ancient humans used tools created by striking one rock against another to chip off flakes, a process that resulted in a basic shape. These simple tools were made between 2.7 million and 1.5 million years ago.
The hand ax emerged during a shift in early human innovation about 1.7 million years ago in a time called the Acheulean age that lasted until about 150,000 years ago. The large and heavy, pointed almond-shaped stones required complex technical ability called knapping, or chipping away small flakes to create sharp edges, for their production, de la Torre said.
Ancient craftsmanship on display
The Olduvai Gorge bone tools were first spotted in 2018 during excavations carried out between 2015 and 2022. Researchers narrowed in on a specific gully in the gorge after first finding hominin teeth on the surface during a field survey between 2010 and 2011, which Njao helped lead with Robert Blumenschine, professor emeritus of evolutionary anthropology at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Elephant bones resulted in the largest tools, ranging from 8.6 to 15 inches (22 to 38 centimeters) long and 3.1 inches to 6 inches (8 to 15 centimeters) wide, while the hippo bones made for slightly smaller tools spanning from 7 to 12 inches (18 to 30 centimeters) long and 2.3 to 3.1 inches (6 to 8 centimeters) wide.
The same knapping techniques were applied to bones made exclusively from the dense, strong long bones of large animals. The tools, mainly made from bones freshly collected from carcasses, shed 'new light on the almost unknown world of early hominin bone technology,' the study authors said.
'The tools show evidence that their creators carefully worked the bones, chipping off flakes to create useful shapes,' said study coauthor Dr. Renata Peters, associate professor at the University College London's Institute of Archaeology, in a statement. 'We were excited to find these bone tools from such an early timeframe. It means that human ancestors were capable of transferring skills from stone to bone, a level of complex cognition that we haven't seen elsewhere for another million years.'
The bones add new evidence that early hominin cultures were experiencing a technological transition about 1.5 million years ago, de la Torre said.
'Prior to our discovery, the technological transition from the Oldowan to the Acheulean was limited to the study of stone tools,' de la Torre said. 'This discovery leads us to assume that early humans significantly expanded their technological options, which until then were limited to the production of stone tools and now allowed new raw materials to be incorporated into the repertoire of potential artifacts.'
An advanced comprehension of toolmaking and the ability to apply it to different materials suggests that ancient human ancestors had greater cognitive abilities than previously believed, the researchers said.
New mysteries emerge
Previous discoveries of bone tools have occurred in isolated instances across Europe and Asia, but the 27 bones found at Olduvai Gorge seem to imply mass production, the study authors said. While the bone tool kits found later in Europe, dated to 400,000 years ago, are much more refined, the Olduvai Gorge tools were more effective for heavy-duty tasks, Njau said.
While there is no direct evidence to show how the tools were used, the researchers said they believe hominins employed them to strip down animal carcasses for food and to produce new tools.
The researchers also don't know which specific human ancestor species made the tools because no hominin remains were found with the bones. But previous research conducted at the site has suggested that Homo erectus and the hominin species Paranthropus boisei lived in the region.
Human ancestors were likely inspired to make tools from bone due the abundance of animal carcasses available across the landscape, especially during seasonal migrations, Njau said, while rocks may have been harder to come by depending on where the hominins lived. But bone tools are scarcer in the archaeological record because organic material such as bone can break down more easily, he said.
Dr. Briana Pobiner, paleoanthropologist and research scientist in the Human Origins Program at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, said the study underscores the importance that tools made from materials other than stone had for our ancestors — and how these artifacts can be 'essentially archaeologically invisible.' Pobiner was not involved in the study.
'That there is a collection of 27 bone tools, and not just one or a few, suggests that hominins 1.5 million years ago (at least in this one place) were able to successfully transfer their knowledge of how to knap stone to knapping bone,' Pobiner said. 'To me, this signals that toolmaking was becoming an increasingly important part of our ancestors' lives. And once again, we should be looking in museum collections for more evidence of hominin behavior — in this case, bone tool manufacture — earlier than we might have previously expected.'

Get to an observing location that looks southeast — preferably low to the horizon — and at the specific time of moonrise where you are (during dusk), you'll see the red-orange orb rise before your eyes. Seen from the Northern Hemisphere, the full moon will rise far to the southeast, move across the sky close to the southern horizon, and set in the southwest close to dawn. It's happening because we're in the midst of a rare two-year period known as the 'major lunar standstill" or "lunistice," when a once-in 18.6-year event will create the lowest-hanging full moon since 2006 and until 2043. Earth's axis is tilted by 23.5 degrees with respect to the ecliptic, the path of the sun through the daytime sky, and, in effect, the plane of the solar system. That's what gives us seasons, and that's why planets are always found close to the ecliptic (hence the misused "planetary alignment" claims despite planets always being somewhat aligned with each other). The moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic twice each month, and when those crossings align with a new or full moon, eclipses can occur — hence the shared root in the words 'ecliptic' and 'eclipse.' While the sun's rise and set points vary throughout the year, changing by 47 degrees — and reaching the extreme points at the solstices — the moon's range is bigger, with that 5-degree tilt giving its rise and set points a 70-degree range near a major standstill, according to Griffith Observatory. Mount Coot-tha Lookout, Brisbane A major lunar standstill is a period when the northernmost and southernmost moonrise and moonset are furthest apart. Unlike a solstice (Latin for "sun stand still"), which lasts for one day, a major lunar standstill lasts for two years. These events are most noticeable during a full moon. Essentially, the swiveling and shifting orbit of the moon — a consequence of the sun's gravitational pull — is tilted at its maximum angle relative to the ecliptic. Every 18.6 years, the tilts combine to cause the moon to rise and set as much as 28.5° north or south of due east and west, respectively. Most people won't notice the major lunar standstill, but if you regularly watch the full moon rise from a particular place, go there — you'll get a shock when the moon rises at an extreme position much farther from where you might imagine it will rise. Imaging a full moon using a smartphone isn't easy, but it is possible to capture something special. First, switch off your flash and turn on HDR mode (if available) to better capture both the moon and the landscape as the light fades during dusk. Don't zoom in because digital zoom only blurs the details. Instead, frame the moon within a landscape for more impact, which is especially effective during this month's unusually far-southeast moonrise. If you use a manual photography app, stick to an ISO of 100 for a clean shot and experiment with slower (but not too slow) shutter speeds. A tripod will help, especially when using slow shutter speeds. However, if you don't have one, you can balance your phone on a wall or ledge. The key is to image it when it's low on the horizon and glowing orange. You've got a short window to capture that color, even with this low-hanging full moon, which will turn bright white as it lifts above the horizon. Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

European Mars orbiter spies crumbling crater 'soaked in layers of Martian history' (photo)

A European Mars probe captured a stunning view of a Martian crater that's rich in many of the features that help scientists reconstruct the planet's dynamic history over billions of years. The image, taken in October 2024 using the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express orbiter, shows a crumbling crater called Deuteronilus Cavus. It is "soaked in layers of Martian history," having been exposed to volcanic lava flows, erosion from liquid water, repeated freeze-thaw cycles that expanded its edges, and layers of wind-blown volcanic dust settling over time, according to a statement from the space agency. Located in a transitional zone between the planet's rugged southern highlands and smoother northern lowlands, Deuteronilus Cavus is believed to originally have formed following an impact roughly 4.1 to 3.7 billion years ago, when Mars and other planets were being bombarded by huge numbers of asteroids and comets. Over time, the nearly circular 75-mile-wide (120 kilometers) depression has been eroded by water and ice, enlarging it to nearly twice its initial size. ESA shared a fun "recipe" outlining the series of events that shaped the crater, offering valuable insights into the planet's climatic and geological evolution. For example, the presence of clay minerals indicates past interactions between volcanic materials and water, hinting at the possibility of ancient habitable environments, according to the statement. This is further supported by channels cut through the crater's rim, likely formed by surface water flow or the collapse of weakened ground above draining subsurface water. Meanwhile, grooves in the crater rim suggest that ice once formed when Mars' axis tilted more sharply away from the sun than it does now. "Around the base of the crater's inner walls, we can see the smooth, tongue-shaped ends of rock-covered glaciers. These 'debris aprons' formed when ice mixed together with rocky debris along the crater walls during a period of glaciation, and slowly crept downslope." The crater's interior also exhibits a mix of rock knobs, mesas, channels and plains, believed to be remnants of a collapsed central peak. Dark volcanic ash covers much of the crater floor, while surrounding wrinkle ridges mark ancient lava flows. "This feature-rich crater has all the ingredients for exploring Mars' varied geological processes, giving us a tantalizing taste of its complex history," ESA officials said in the statement.

Resilience, a Private Japanese Spacecraft, Crash-Landed on the Moon
A Japanese spacecraft has probably crashed on the Moon, the second failed landing attempt for Tokyo-based private firm ispace. The HAKUTO-R Mission 2 (M2) lander — also called Resilience — began its landing sequence from a 100-kilometre-altitude orbit at 3.13am local time on 5 June. The craft was due to land near the centre of Mare Frigoris (Sea of Cold) at 4.17am. The ispace team said at a press conference that it lost contact with M2 when the craft was 192 metres above the Moon's surface and descending faster than expected. An attempt to reboot M2 was also unsuccessful. [Sign up for Today in Science, a free daily newsletter] M2 didn't receive measurements of the distance between itself and the lunar surface in time to slow down and reach its correct landing speed, the team said. 'It eventually slowed down, but not softly enough,' says Clive Neal, who studies the Moon at the University of Notre Dame in Indianapolis, US. He speculates that the failure was probably caused by a systems issue that wasn't identified and addressed during the M1 landing attempt. 'It's something that I believe will definitely be fixable, because getting that close means there's a few tweaks that are going to be needed for the next one,' he adds. If M2 had successfully landed on the lunar surface, the mission would have been the second time a commercial company had achieved the feat and a first for a non-US company. ispace's Mission 1 (M1) probably crashed during a landing attempt in April 2023. Lunar landings are challenging. When M1 crashed, Ryo Ujiie, ispace's chief technology officer said the telemetry — which collects data on the craft's altitude and speed — estimated that M1 was on the surface when it wasn't, causing the lander to free fall. Speaking to Nature last week, Ujiie said the company had addressed the telemetry issue with M2 and modified its software. 'We also carefully selected how to approach the landing site,' he added. Had M2 landed successfully, the craft would have supplied electricity for its cargo, including water electrolyzing equipment and a module for food production experiments — developed by Japan-based Takasago Thermal Engineering and biotechnology firm Euglena. A deep space radiation probe made by Taiwan's National Central University, and the 54-centimetre Tenacious rover were also be on board. The rover, created by ispace's European subsidiary in Luxemburg, was going to be released from the lander to collect imagery, location data and lunar sand known as regolith. Tenacious also carries a small red house made by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg. The craft launched on 15 January from Cape Canaveral, Florida, onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The rocket was also carrying the Blue Ghost Moon lander — developed by Firefly Aerospace, an aerospace firm based in Texas — which landed on the Moon on 2 March. M2 took a longer path to the moon than Blue Ghost, performing a lunar flyby on 15 February and spending two months in a low-energy transfer orbit before entering lunar orbit on 7 May. Ujiie says the path was slower because it was a low-energy trajectory, meaning that less fuel was used to move between Earth and lunar orbit. Richard de Grijs, an astronomer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, says there will likely be more private companies trying to land their own crafts on the Moon. 'It seems that the big government players like NASA are quite keen to partner with commercial companies,' he says, because they can develop and launch crafts more cheaply than government bodies.
