In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old boy was found dead inside a Mickey Mouse-themed bouncing castle in Hussainabad area under Thakurganj late on Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday.
According to a police statement, the body was discovered in Hussainabad area on Durga Devi Marg under the jurisdiction of Satkhanda police outpost around 8pm on Tuesday.
'Local authorities were alerted by residents, after which a police team promptly reached the site. The child was found lying motionless inside the ride,' Thakurganj SHO Shrikant Rai said.
'The body was discovered when the ride was reopened for use. There were visible scratches and abrasion marks on his abdomen,' the SHO said, adding; 'Prima facie, the injuries appear to have been caused by the machine (air filler) used to inflate the bouncing castle, and the boy may have been trapped inside it.'
Preliminary investigations suggest the child died after being caught in the structure of the inflatable ride. There were no immediate signs of foul play, though further inquiry is ongoing, the police statement said.
The deceased was identified as Kalmuddin, son of Kallu, a native of Hardoi district. He was currently living with his sister in Thakurganj area and was sold bottled water around the Clock Tower in Hussainabad area, the SHO said, adding the body has been sent for the post-mortem examination and efforts are ongoing to contact the family members of the deceased.
'Further legal procedures are being followed, and the law and order situation at the site remains normal,' police said.
Locals raised questions about the safety and maintenance standards of temporary amusement setups, especially those operated without proper regulation in densely populated localities.
Sources told HT that the ride is privately owned and has been operating illegally in the area for a long time, with the Hussainabad and Allied Trust and sections of the district administration responsible for managing the Hussainabad zone looking the other way.

3 Dalit minors tied to flagpole, assaulted in Karnataka; 8 held

Three Dalit minor boys were allegedly tied to a flagpole and brutally assaulted by a mob of upper-caste villagers in Harogeri village under the Naragund police station limits in Karnataka's Gadag district. The assault, which took place on May 28, surfaced only after videos began circulating on social media, triggering widespread outrage. According to police, the attack was triggered by allegations that the boys had sent obscene messages to a girl from an upper-caste community. Using this as justification, a mob of around 60 people allegedly tied the boys to a gram panchayat flagpole and beat them with ropes, sticks, and slippers. The attack left the boys with serious injuries and swelling across their bodies. 'We registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and BNS provisions on May 30 and have arrested eight persons so far. Many accused are absconding, but we arrested four more on Friday and are continuing our efforts to trace the remaining suspects.' A separate POCSO case has also been registered against 30 people in connection with the incident, police said. The brutality didn't stop with the assault. According to the families of the victims, when they attempted to intervene, they were threatened and chased away by members of the dominant caste. 'Untouchability is still very much alive in our village,' one of the victim's parents told HT. 'This incident is just another example of the discrimination we face every day.' He was rushed to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi, where he remains in critical condition. While a case was eventually registered at the Naragund police station, local sources indicated that there were initial efforts to suppress the complaint, with some community leaders reportedly pushing for a compromise. It was only after the visuals went viral online that authorities moved to take formal action.

Thar assault case: 2 held for murder bid over Insta post

NOIDA: Two men were arrested late Wednesday for an alleged attempt to commit culpable homicide days after a viral video showed a 25-year-old man being hit by an SUV during a violent quarrel in Sector 53, Noida, on June 2, police said on Thursday. The purported video showed a black Mahindra Thar hitting the victim—Saurabh Yadav—from behind, flinging him into a roadside drain during a clash between two rival groups. HT, however, could not verify the authenticity of the video. Police identified the arrested suspects as Aman Awana, 29, and Akash Awana, 25, both residents of Sector 23, Noida. The two allegedly led the assault that left Yadav seriously injured. He is undergoing treatment for multiple blade injuries, a fractured ear, and a broken finger. His brother Sumit Yadav, who recorded the 28-second video, required eight stitches for head injury, officers said. According to Noida police, a case was initially registered against Akash Awana, Aman Awana, Gaurav Chauhan and Kunal Chauhan, under BNS sections for attempt to commit culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult with attempt to provoke breach of peace, and later enhanced to include section for murder attempt based on the viral footage. 'During interrogation, Aman and Akash admitted they had called Saurabh and his brother Sumit near their office after an argument over Instagram comments. The meeting turned violent, leading to the assault. The accused have confessed to physically attacking the brothers during the confrontation,' said ADCP (Noida) Sumit Shukla. Police said the latest dispute was triggered after Akash allegedly messaged a female friend of one Ayush. The online spat escalated, culminating in an in-person clash between two groups. Yadav brothers allege they were ambushed by 15-20 men armed with rods and blades. 'The duo are the main accused in the case and have been arrested. The Thar SUV used in the assault has already been confiscated. They will be produced before the court, and further necessary legal action is underway,' the ADCP added. The video triggered public outrage, particularly over the delay in police action, leading to suspension of SHO Shyam Babu Shukla of Sector 24 police station and Gijod police outpost in-charge Jagmohan Singh for failing to report the incident promptly and for negligence in apprehending the accused. Noida police commissioner Laxmi Singh had ordered a departmental inquiry into their conduct. The seized SUV used in the attack has been sent for forensic examination. Further arrests are likely as the investigation continues, police said.

RCB event turns deadly: What led to the Bengaluru stampede killing 11 cricket fans?

A massive crowd that gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first Indian Premier League (IPL) title turned tragic on Wednesday evening after a stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 people and injured over 30 others. According to authorities, most of those who died were young people, both men and women, and several among them were students. Chief minister Siddaramaiah noted that the Bengaluru stadium has a capacity for 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people had come. 'The match happened last evening (Tuesday), and today (Wednesday) this event was organised by the cricket association, so no one had expected so many people to come.' Explaining the exact reason behind the stampede, Siddaramaiah said the tragedy resulted from poor coordination and overwhelming turnout. "There are small gates. The people entered through the gates. They have also broken the gates, so a stampede has taken place. Nobody had expected so much of a crowd to come. Prima facie, it looks like that. I am not saying nothing has happened. The inquiry will bring out facts,' he added. 'There were over 1.5 lakh people at the gates, banging and eventually breaking through in some places. The attempt to enter the stadium resulted in the stampede.' 'It was a crowd beyond what anyone expected,' said deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, calling the situation 'absolutely uncontrollable.' 'The crowd was beyond our control. Even though we had deployed force, it was too much,' a senior police officer told HT on condition of anonymity. Police said around 50,000 people had gathered within a 1-km radius of the stadium, and many tried to push through gates or climb over barriers. 'We had to resort to a lathi charge at some points. The problem was that the stadium gates were narrow, and the pressure of the crowd caused the tragedy,' the official added. Multiple pictures show RCB supporters trying to scale walls and climb over gates to secure entry, while screaming 'RCB, RCB." "While those with valid tickets were allowed to enter the stadium for celebrations, many tried to squeeze in with those who had free passes and tickets. In that bid to get entry, some of them also started pushing each other," a police officer told PTI. Also read: Bengaluru crush: Sea of fans, hapless cops, an urban tragedy Several other clips from the scene showed people climbing cars and trees in an attempt to get a view of the ongoing celebrations. Police were also seen using mild force to manage the swelling crowds. Among other reasons, there was confusion over event plans as the Bengaluru traffic police announced in the morning that there would be no victory parade – only a celebration inside the stadium. However, at 3:14 PM, the RCB management posted on social media that a parade would indeed be held at 5 PM, followed by stadium celebrations. They also announced limited free passes online. This mixed messaging confused fans, many of whom showed up at the stadium without tickets or hoping to get passes. 'In the morning, we were told that passes could be purchased. Later, we were told they were being distributed at the stadium. So like me, many landed up here hoping to get a pass,' Rakesh Prakash, a software engineer among the crowd, told HT. The state government has ordered a full inquiry into the incident. Thousands of fans began arriving at M Chinnaswamy Stadium hours before the event. Anticipation was high as RCB was set to celebrate its maiden IPL title with a public victory parade. Shortly after gates were opened, the stadium reached its full seating capacity. Officials subsequently closed the gates to prevent further entry. With tens of thousands still gathered outside, three main gates—Gate 3, Gate 12, and Gate 18—were shut. Unable to enter, fans began pressing forward, causing panic and overcrowding at the barricades. As fans tried to force their way in, a deadly crush unfolded. Several people were trampled, and many more suffered injuries in the chaos. Around 100,000 people assembled at Dr Ambedkar Road near Vidhana Soudha to greet the RCB team. The team was felicitated by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah before proceeding to the stadium. The RCB team reached the stadium amid loud cheers and continued fan frenzy. The team departed around 6:30 PM, once news of the tragedy began to spread. Initial reports confirmed two deaths. As rescue operations continued, the death toll rose to 11, with 47 others reported injured. Ambulances and emergency responders were rushed to the scene.
