Gun battle between illegal miners terrifies Benoni residents
Residents living near Golden Drive and New Modder mining sites in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, endured another night of fear on Wednesday as a violent shoot-out erupted between rival gangs of illegal miners.
Benoni City Times reports that according to messages shared on a local community WhatsApp group, the gunfire began at around 17:30 and continued into the evening, sending families into panic as shots rang out just meters from their homes.
'It sounds like living in the Gaza Strip,' one resident wrote, comparing the intensity of the gunfire to a war zone.
Others echoed the sentiment, saying the noise was so loud it felt like bullets were flying outside their windows.
Local security company Hlasela Tactical responded to distress calls from residents at around 20:30, deploying three vehicles, including a large armoured vehicle, to the scene.
Jacques Olivier of Hlasela Tactical says when they arrived, they saw illegal miners shooting recklessly from the mine dumps near homes in New Modder.
He says the violence stemmed from clashes between rival illegal mining gangs, believed to include Basotho nationals and other factions. They reportedly are fighting over control of recently sealed-off mining shafts after DMR, police and security forces shut down several illegal operations earlier this year as part of a government crackdown. Newly dug mine shafts have been reported.
'Various groups are clashing for control. We did not intervene in the gunfight but chased those shooting too close to the community,' says Olivier.
Residents encouraged each other to contact the Benoni SAPS during the incident, but it is alleged that no police responded to the scene.
Olivier says they saw police vehicles in other areas and expressed concern over the SAPS's absence.
'The police are putting the public at risk by not showing up. These miners are not just shooting in the area, they are robbing people too. And this is all happening next to Benoni CBD,' he says.
Thanks to Hlasela Tactical's intervention, residents said the situation calmed down enough by late evening for them to get some sleep.
This is not the first time the community has raised concerns about the lack of response from local authorities.
In June 2023, Benoni City Times reported similar allegations after a business along Golden Drive complained of police inaction despite repeated calls for help.
An employee from the company, speaking anonymously, claimed police officers admitted to fearing the miners, citing the criminals' access to heavy weaponry and explosives.
Police refutes claims
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele refuted claims that police never arrived at the mining site.
'Police officers were deployed to the area after receiving complaints via the 10111 emergency number. They did not enter the mining site because it was too dark and dangerous.
'The SAPS Ekurhuleni District sent backup, including the Public Order Police Unit, K9 Unit, Flying Squad and crime prevention officers, who patrolled around the Van Ryn mining site.'
Sekele says they received no reports regarding the discovery of bodies of illegal miners following the shoot-out.
She reiterated the police are continuing efforts to curb illegal mining activities in Benoni through ongoing operations, including Operation Vala Mgodi.
The Golden Drive and New Modder sites have been a hotspot for illegal mining for years, because of their network of abandoned mineshafts.
In January, SAPS deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela announced a partnership with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to seal off illegal shafts as part of Operation Vala Mgodi (Close the Holes).
The operation, launched on January 27, concluded in March, but residents say the violence has not stopped.
Residents are once again calling for urgent police intervention before more lives are lost or innocent residents get caught in the crossfire.

Benoni man handed life imprisonment for raping his children
The Benoni Regional Court recently sentenced a father of three children, aged between three and 13, to life imprisonment. Benoni City Times reports that the conviction comes during Child Protection Week, observed from May 29 to June 5. It raises awareness about child abuse and the importance of reporting incidents. The Benoni father was found guilty and sentenced for rape, sexual assault, compelling or causing a child to witness an act of self-masturbation and exposure or display of genital organs. The harrowing ordeal came to light on August 4, 2021, when the mother of the victims reported a rape case at Benoni SAPS. Her suspicions were raised after she heard one of her children screaming: 'Daddy, you are hurting me.' Upon questioning the child, the child disclosed the abuse, which also led to the revelation that her siblings had also been victims. According to SAPS Ekurhuleni District Communication Officer Captain Nelda Sekgobela, the father would touch or rub the children's private parts and insert his finger in their private parts. The case was assigned to Detective Captain Anrika Bell of the Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection Services and Sexual Offences Unit, who diligently investigated the case and secured the conviction. 1987 Daveyton murder: Investigator details how he traced apartheid-era cops
Lieutenant Colonel Petrus Beukman, the investigating officer in the case against three former apartheid-era police officers accused of murdering Daveyton student activist Caiphus Nyoka, testified in court on Wednesday about how he tracked down the accused decades after the alleged crime. Benoni City Times reports that Beukman took the stand in the Pretoria High Court, sitting at the Benoni Magistrate's Court, in the trial of Leon Louis van den Berg, Abram Hercules Engelbrecht, and Pieter Stander. The trio face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, and defeating the ends of justice. They have all pleaded not guilty. Their co-accused, Johan Marais, who pleaded guilty to the murder and was convicted in November at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, is awaiting sentencing. Nyoka, a leader of the Congress of South African Students in Daveyton and a co-ordinator for Transco East Rand, was fatally shot on August 24, 1987. He was allegedly targeted by a police unit established to combat 'terrorism' during apartheid. Testimony During Beukman's testimony, he said he traced the inquest docket to the Springs SAPS and then went to Daveyton SAPS but had no luck. He decided to visit the crime scene, Nyoka's home in Daveyton, where he left a note after finding no one at home. 'I went to see Nyoka's sister, Alegria, in Springs and told her I'm the new investigating officer in the case. I asked if she could assist with information about the investigation, and she brought a brown envelope that contained documents from the Human Rights Foundation and her statement to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission,' he said. Beukman said this gave him some direction in his investigation. He subsequently took statements from Alegria, her sister, her brother, and the three friends who were in the room with Nyoka when the incident occurred. He then made contact with Engelbrecht, and they met in Germiston, where he informed him that he was a murder accused and read him his rights before taking a statement. On another day, Beukman went to Van den Berg's house in Springs and took his statement as well. He asked Van Den Berg about Stander's whereabouts and was told that Stander was out of the country. 'I approached the SAPS human resources management department to help me trace him,' Beukman said. He contacted Crime Intelligence to request a profile on Stander. It was then that he learned Stander had been moving between South Africa and Iraq, where he was working as a soldier. Beukman applied for a warrant of arrest, and in April last year, Stander was arrested upon his return at OR Tambo International Airport. Meanwhile, the courtroom was filled with members of the ANC, civil society groups, and Nyoka's family members. The trial continues, with further witnesses expected to testify in the coming days. 2 killed in armed robbery at Ekurhuleni filling station
A man and a woman in their 20s were shot dead during a business robbery at the Engen Garage in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, during the early hours of Monday. Benoni City Times reports that, according to Ekurhuleni district police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela, a group of armed suspects stormed the filling station and ordered one of the petrol attendants to instruct his colleagues to open the shop's main door. Once inside, the suspects allegedly forced the attendant to lie on the ground before bombing the drop-in safe and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. While some suspects were inside the shop, others remained outside directing customers who arrived to refuel to exit their vehicles and lie on the ground. The man was fatally shot after he refused to comply. He allegedly reversed his vehicle and the suspects opened fire. He died at the scene. A 21-year-old woman, who was also in the vehicle, sustained gunshot wounds and later died in hospital from her injuries. The Daveyton SAPS have opened cases of murder and business robbery. No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact their nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
