Pussy Riot warns America to ‘wake up!' at Washington Square Park protest in NYC
Pussy Riot, the provocative, political Russian punk band, came to Washington Square Park Wednesday to deliver a stern warning: 'Wake up, America!'
Their faces hidden behind red ski masks, six members of the feminist art collective marched down Fifth Ave. and into the Greenwich Village park around 1 p.m. Standing in front of the Washington Square Arch, they unfurled two large banners bearing messages: 'Don't Give Up' and 'Freedom of Speech?'
Two other members of the group held up a rotating collection of placards with phrases like 'Fever Dream,' '1984' and 'Great Again: The Greatest Greatness But Mine Is Greater (Again).'
'We've been imprisoned in Russia,' said band member Masha Alyokhina. 'We've been persecuted. We are in federal wanted lists in our country. So if we appear on the border, we'll be immediately arrested for our anti-Putin and anti-war — [a war] which he started — activities.
'We are here now because we see the [rise] of authoritarian[ism] here. We want to call people to not be silent and we want people to remember to not to give up, even in the difficult conditions — to have hope inside, to have belief.'
Alyokhina served 21 months in prison in Russia after the band was accused of 'hooliganism' for performing in a Moscow cathedral in 2012. Two years later, they were attacked by Cossacks with whips and pepper spray at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
In October 2016, with Donald Trump on the verge of winning his first term as U.S. president, the anti-authoritarian band released a song and video, 'Make America Great Again,' featuring the refrain, 'Let other people in/ Listen to your women/ Stop killing Black children/ Make America great again.'
Claudia Emilyn Schwalb, 72, a visual artist and longtime Village resident who was enjoying her usual 'park time,' said she was honored to have seen Pussy Riot, albeit briefly.
'I had no idea they were going to be here,' she said. 'I'm thrilled. I like everything in art that's liberal. … They're stubborn exhibitionists.'
Pussy Riot's park action coincides with the start of their North American tour, which kicks off Thursday in Montreal. On May 2, they'll play at The Hall at Elsewhere, in Brooklyn.

The Trump administration can continue to hold anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil at the Louisiana detention facility where he's been locked up since March, a federal judge ruled Friday. Judge Michael Farbiarz had issued a preliminary injunction earlier this week barring the Trump administration from deporting the ex-Columbia University student and ordering his release. On Friday, however, the New Jersey judge determined that federal authorities can continue to hold Khalil on a separate alleged immigration violation discovered after his initial arrest. 3 Farbiarz previously ordered the Trump administration to release Khalil by Friday. Senate Judiciary Committee 'It would plainly be unlawful to detain [Khalil] on a charge the Court preliminarily enjoined,' Farbiarz wrote in his order. 'But by their letter of this afternoon … the [Trump administration] have now represented that [Khalil] is being detained on another, second charge.' 'That second charge has not been preliminary enjoined by the court.' Farbiarz noted that Khalil's legal team has not 'put forward factual evidence as to why it might be unlawful to detain him on the second charge' and 'failed to make meaningful legal arguments as to that second charge.' The second charge accuses Khalil of failing to disclose on his green card application that he was a member of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and the Columbia University Apartheid Divestment coalition, as well as his work for the Syria Office in the British Embassy in Beirut. 'We are profoundly disappointed that Mahmoud has to bear any more delay and detention from this historically outrageous government conduct,' Baher Azmy, an attorney for Khalil, told Politico. 3 The Trump administration claims Khalil engaged in pro-Hamas activities at Columbia University and hid information about his background on his green card application. 'To the extent the Petitioner requests relief from this Court, the request is denied,' the judge wrote. On Wednesday, Farbiarz determined that it was 'overwhelmingly likely' that the alleged green card application was not the reason for his detainment, but rather Secretary of State Marco Rubio's initial decision to revoke his legal status over his role in anti-Israel protests at Columbia University. The Trump administration claims Khalil engaged in activities 'aligned to Hamas,' the Palestinian terror group, while attending the Ivy League School.

Ukraine's Sapsan ballistic missile to enter serial production following successful combat testing
Ukraine's domestically developed short-range Sapsan ballistic missile has successfully completed combat testing and is in the process of serial production, Ukrainian media reported on June 13. The missile, with a payload of 480 kg, completed testing in May after successfully striking a Russian military target at a range of nearly 300 km, Valentyn Badrak, head of the an independent Ukrainian think Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies told Ukraine's Defense Ministry reportedly dedicated a department to formulate and test the missile. There is no reported timeline as to when the missiles can be seen in regular use on the battlefield. Domestically produced long-range weapons are of key importance to Ukraine's defense strategy, as Western partners have been in delivering adequate weaponry amid increasing Russian attacks and offensives. The news comes as U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a congressional hearing on June 10 that the United States will reduce funding allocated for military assistance to Ukraine in its upcoming defense budget In November 2024, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine has produced its first 100 missiles. Since then, Ukraine has continued to increase domestic weapon production. Zelensky said on April 16 that over of the weapons used at the front line are now produced in Ukraine, including over 95% of drones used at front line. Zelensky also previously revealed that Ukraine had developed another domestic-made weapon, a missile-drone Palianytsia. Social media erupts after Dem senator compares 'political stunt' to civil rights leader: 'Woke insult'
Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse faced immediate blowback on Thursday in response to a social media post where he compared his Democratic colleague's outburst at a press conference to the work of Civil Rights pioneer and late Congressman John Lewis. Shortly after Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., was forcibly removed and handcuffed during a press conference held by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles amid anti-ICE rioting, Sen.
