Op Sindoor: Defence ministry clears 14 territorial army battalions for duty
The Ministry of Defence has issued an order authorising the Chief of the Army Staff to call out officers and enrolled personnel of the Territorial Army for active duty under Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule, 1948. The notification comes as tensions with Pakistan escalate and India's launch of Operation Sindoor.
According to the notification dated May 6, 2025, the government has sanctioned 14 out of the existing 32 Infantry Battalions of the Territorial Army. These units may be deployed across various commands, including the Southern, Eastern, Western, Central, Northern, South Western, Andaman and Nicobar, and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), the ministry notification said.
"The embodiment shall be ordered provided the funds are available in the budget or have been made available by re-appropriation of the internal savings in the budget. For units embodied at the behest of Ministries other than the Ministry of Defence, the cost will be debited to the respective Ministries and will not be included in the budget allocation of the Ministry of Defence," the notice added. This order is backdated to take effect from February 10, 2025, and will remain valid for a period of three years, until February 9, 2028.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. The initial strike targeted nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This came in retaliation for the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.

Specialised units like the ecological task forces work on environmental projects, such as afforestation and the Clean Ganga Mission.

Bombay HC overturns rustication of Pune student arrested over post about Operation Sindoor
The Bombay High Court on Monday overturned the decision of an engineering college in Pune to rusticate a 19-year-old student who was arrested in May over an allegedly objectionable social media post about Operation Sindoor, Bar and Bench reported. A bench of Justices MS Karnik and NR Borkar set aside the decision after finding that the student had not been heard before the rustication order was passed. The court, however, granted the college liberty to pass a fresh order after hearing the student, the legal news outlet reported. The 19-year-old is a second-year information technology student at Sinhgad Academy of Engineering, a private college affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University. On May 7, she had allegedly reposted material on Instagram from an account that criticised the Indian government. The post was related to military tensions between India and Pakistan after Operation Sindoor. After receiving threats online, she had deleted the post and apologised. However, following protests against her post, she was arrested on May 9. She was rusticated by the college on the same day. On May 27, a division bench of Justices Gauri Godse and Somasekhar Sundaresan criticised the 19-year-old's college for rusticating her for the social media post, saying that educational institutes need to help students rather than turn them into criminals. The High Court had also criticised the Maharashtra government for arresting the student. It had directed the student's counsel to file a bail petition, adding that it would be granted immediately. She was granted bail on May 27. The bench had also directed that the student not be summoned by the police during her exams and barred her from leaving Maharashtra without permission. It had added that she had missed her May 24 and May 27 papers while in custody, and allowed her to approach university authorities regarding those exams. The police had been instructed to provide her security during the exam and the college was given the option to arrange separate seating if needed.

The Ministry of Defence is set to consider a proposal for acquiring six Netra Mark-1A Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) systems for the Indian Air Force this month, sources have informed. The proposal will be presented to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The development will see airframes sourced from Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer, with modifications carried out by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). AWACS, an Airborne Warning and Control System, serves as a long-range radar surveillance and command and control platform mounted on an aircraft. The acquisition aims to triple the IAF's AEW&C fleet, addressing critical gaps in India's air defense architecture amid rising regional tensions with China and Pakistan.
