Two American tourists bitten by shark seconds after jumping in Bahamas water
A dream vacation in the Bahamas for two young American tourists turned into a nightmare when they jumped into the sparkling blue water hand-in-hand and mere minutes later were attacked by a shark.
Rileigh Decker, 20, and Summer Layman, 24, were swimming in Bimini Bay, a popular resort area about 50 nautical miles off the coast of Florida, Friday evening when the attack unfolded, Royal Bahamas Police said in a statement Saturday.
The women are now back in Florida, sharing the harrowing ordeal from Decker's hospital bed, after both women suffered bites from what they believe was a bull shark.
'We're just very grateful to still be here with all of our limbs,' Decker told NBC's TODAY show Tuesday.
On that fateful day, the girls had plunged into the sea off a friend's yacht, but soon after Decker said she 'felt something nudge my leg.'
'I was like, 'Summer, what was that?' And she was like, 'Don't scare me like that.' And probably about two minutes later, we were right by the ladder. I felt my leg get tugged down, and I immediately knew I was bit by a shark,' Decker recalled.
Their group of friends and family immediately pulled them out of the water to safety. They wrapped a tourniquet around Decker's right leg and found Layman also suffering a bite.
'They yelled to me that the top of my foot was shredded and I just hadn't realized until I looked down,' Layman said.
'I just put my head in my hands and started praying that God wouldn't take my life and I would live,' Decker said through tears. 'Yeah, it was very scary.'
Decker was airlifted to a hospital in the Bahamas for further treatment. Once they were both stable, both were flown back to Florida for Decker to undergo surgery.
The Bahamas has one of the highest shark incident rates in the world, with 34 confirmed unprovoked attacks since record keeping began, according to the Florida Museum's international shark attack database. In 2023, a 44-year-old Boston woman was killed after she was bitten while paddleboarding in the Bahamas, and in April 2024 a 24-year-old man was attacked by two sharks in a matter of seconds after falling into the water at a marina.
The women said they won't enter the ocean any time soon.
'I will not be going into the water for a long time,' Layman said.
'I will never. I won't even put my toes in ever again,' Decker echoed.

Blood at campsite where three sisters were killed linked to girls' wanted dad
A manhunt is underway for ex-US Army soldier Travis Decker, 39, whose three daughters were found dead in a tent in a remote campsite in Washington with police saying blood found at the site may be his Blood found at a campsite where three sisters were killed has been linked to the former soldier father who vanished after his three daughters were killed at the remote campsite in Washington, police said today. The bodies of Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia, five, were discovered in a tent close to an abandoned white pickup truck belonging to their 39-year-old father, Travis Decker, who remains at large. Officers from the Chelan County Sheriff's Office have now revealed that male blood has been found at the Rock Island campground. Investigators say the girls were visiting their dad during a court-ordered visitation at the time of the killing. It comes after police claim to have spotted the ex-soldier for the first time since the manhunt was launched. A man, believed to be Decker, was seen near a remote late by hikers - who mentioned he looked ill-prepared for the treacherous terrain. The man fled the scene when a police helicopter flew over the remote area after the alarm was raised. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an update on Facebook that officers believe they know the man's whereabouts, but reminded members of the public not to approach him. A preliminary report into the shocking deaths said the sisters appeared to have died from asphyxiation. Authorities searching for the former Army solider said he is wanted for three counts of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. Police have also warned the public"do not approach" the ex-solider with "extensive training" if he is seen - instead urging the public to call 911. "We are asking for the public, especially those who live or have cabins in the area, to remain highly vigilant and report any suspicious activity," the sheriff's office shared in their latest update after the sighting. "Our office recently received a tip from a hiking party who stated they spotted a lone hiker in the Enchantments area who appeared to be ill prepared for trail and weather conditions, and appeared to be avoiding others. "As the search continues in the area, we are asking that anyone who may have a cabin, or reside in the area report any suspicious activity, lock your doors and vehicles, and look out for your neighbour's property." Cops also found Decker's vehicle with two bloody handprints, close to where the girls were located. Police also discovered personal items like a wallet, food, car seats, and blankets. The location even showed signs somebody had recently been nearby, before cops showed up, as they found a tent a short walk away. The alarm was raised after Decker did not drop his daughters back to their mother. In a Facebook post shared on May 31, Mrs Decker said: "Last night at 8pm Travis was supposed to drop the girls back off with me and never showed. "The cops have him going north out of Wenatchee at 5:41. If you could please all keep an eye out for him, his phone is off and every hotel in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee have been checked." Captain Brian Chance, from the local police force, said the mum "expressed concern because Decker reportedly had never done this before and … is currently experiencing some mental health issues." He added: "What prompted her to call us was that ... he was late returning the girls and had not communicated to her that he was going to be late, which was his typical fashion and so this was out of the ordinary." Decker and his wife have been divorced for several years but he had been allowed to see his daughters every other weekend during specific hours - the dad had been known to stay at motels and camping sites after he lost his home. His ex-wife claimed Decker had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and she believed he did not take medication for it, according to court documents.

Authorities search hiking area for Washington father accused of killing 3 daughters
Authorities believe they have tracked Travis Decker, who is accused of killing his three young daughters, to a hiking area in Chelan County, Washington. 'Tracking teams believe they are on Decker's trail, community support and tips are still needed!' the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in a news release on Tuesday night. Authorities believe he may be in the Blewett Pass area. 'We are asking for the public, especially those who live or have cabins in the area, to remain highly vigilant and report any suspicious activity,' the sheriff's office said. The children, Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, were found dead on June 2 near a campground east of Seattle after their father failed to bring them home from a visitation. According to an affidavit, the girls had bags over their heads and had been zip-tied. An autopsy attributed their deaths to suffocation. Decker's white pickup was found near the girls, according to authorities, who said it had two bloody handprints on it. A large amount of evidence was collected from the scene, along with Decker's dog, which was turned over to a local animal rescue, authorities said. An arrest warrant accuses him of first-degree murder and kidnapping. The manhunt has covered hundreds of square miles by air, land and water, the sheriff's office previously said. Decker, a military veteran and active member of the Washington State National Guard, was described by authorities as an outdoorsman known to go 'off-grid' for months. Authorities tracked him to the Blewett Pass area after receiving a tip from a hiking party who said they saw a lone hiker in the Enchantments area and that the person appeared to be ill-prepared for the trail and weather. The hiking party also said the person appeared to be avoiding others, the sheriff's office said. Tracking teams in a helicopter immediately responded and saw 'a lone, off-trail hiker.' The person ran from sight as the helicopter passed, the sheriff's office said. 'Additional assets were called to the area while they developed a plan to track the individual. Teams later picked up a trail and deployed K9s to the area, tracking the subject to the area of Ingalls Creek Trailhead on HWY 97,' the release states. Authorities are continuing to search the area. Last year, a court ordered Decker to seek mental health treatment and domestic violence anger management counseling, according to the affidavit. It says Decker did not seek treatment and refused to sign a parenting plan imposed by the court. His ex-wife, Whitney Decker, described her relationship with her ex-husband as cordial and said he had never previously failed to return their children, according to the affidavit.
