Boca Juniors seal Apertura last-16 spot with 3-1 win at Belgrano
CORDOBA, Argentina, April 12 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors booked their spot in the last 16 of the Argentine Primera Division Apertura Tournament with a 3-1 victory at Belgrano on Saturday, thanks to goals from Marcos Rojo, Kevin Zenon and Carlos Palacios.
Boca are leading Group A with 29 points, three points clear of second-placed Argentinos Juniors, with three rounds of the regular phase remaining. The top eight teams from each of the two groups progress to the round of 16.
The hosts thought they had struck early when Lucas Menossi tapped home after seven minutes, only to see the goal disallowed for an offside in the build-up.
Boca eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute, when Rojo capitalised on a poor defensive clearance following a corner to score with a scuffed shot.
Rojo emerged as Boca's hero once again early in the second half, heading Nicolas Fernandez's goal-bound shot off the line, but the visitors' defence was undone in the 61st minute when Menossi headed in from close range to draw Belgrano level.
Zenon, however, restored the lead for Boca in the following minute with a fine finish from an Edison Cavani assist, and Palacios sealed the rout, firing into an open goal 14 minutes from time.
Belgrano sit 12th with 14 points.

Boca Juniors defender Costa denied US visa, misses Club World Cup
June 12 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa will miss the Club World Cup after being denied a visa to enter the United States due to a criminal complaint against him in his native Argentina, the club confirmed on Thursday. In 2023, Costa accepted a probationary sentence to avoid trial for an aggravated robbery in 2018, which U.S. officials ruled that he is still serving. Criminal convictions are grounds for inadmissibility to the United States. The decision comes amid a broader crackdown by the Trump administration on issuing visas to some visitors and students. "We can confirm Ayrton Costa is set to miss the Club World Cup with Boca," a club spokesperson told Reuters. "The defender was due to travel on Wednesday night ... but did not obtain the visa." The U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires was not immediately available to respond to a request for comment emailed outside of normal business hours, it said in an automated reply. Boca's opening game is against Portuguese side Benfica in Miami on Monday.

HARV TIME SHOW Czech Republic U21 1 England U21 3: Harvey Elliott sends message to Slot as Three Lions get Euros defence off to flyer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HARVEY ELLIOTT reminded Arne Slot of his capabilities after his stunner for England U21s helped get their Euros defence off to a flyer. The star, 22, has warned Liverpool he's not prepared to 'waste' his career sitting on the bench. Elliott ensured England led at the break and Jonathan Rowe doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. But Czech hit back instantly to set up a tense second period, but the Young Lions secured the 3-1 win thanks to Charlie Cresswell, who along with Elliott are the only survivors from the triumphant 2023 team. Omari Hutchinson looked the liveliest as Lee Carsley's side started strongest but they failed to build on that as momentum swung for the Czechs. Alarm bells were ringing when Vaclav Sejk just missed Martin Suchomel's low cross and they survived another scare when James Beadle pushed over the unmarked Stepan Chaloupek's header. There was another let-off when a corner found Patrik Vydra free in the box and his strike deflected off Jarrell Quansah but Beadle came to the rescue again. But England took the lead against the run of play thanks to great work from skipper James McAtee. The Manchester City ace kept alive Tino Livramento's looping cross and he pulled it back from the byline for Elliott to run on to and rifle home. 5 England skipper James McAtee fends off Vaclav Sejk Credit: Reuters BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK England beat Czech Republic 2-0 two years ago to begin their journey to European glory and the omens were looking good for a repeat moments after half time. Thomas Tuchel discusses England future after World Cup It looked to be a relatively comfortable stop for goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, but instead he bundled it into his own net. However, hopes of a seventh-straight Euros clean sheet were quickly extinguished as Czech produced an instant response. A dangerous cross from captain Vaclav Sejk was nodded home by Daniel Fila and suddenly the Young Lions were on the back foot. Carsley's men stood firm to weather the storm and began to look lively on the counter after the introductions of Ethan Nwaneri and Jay Stansfield. Arsenal teen Nwaneri was straight into the twists and turns as Carsley's men started to turn the screw. And they got their reward when Cresswell rose highest to head home Alex Scott's corner late on to get England off to a winning start. Bournemouth midfielder Scott certainly let his feet do the talking - as he played with a chin strap o protect his broken jaw. They now travel to Nitra on Sunday knowing a victory over Slovenia would cement them a spot in the knockouts.

Hamilton backs Vasseur, Briton in for the long haul at Ferrari
MONTREAL, June 12 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton launched a passionate defence of Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur on Thursday and said that the Frenchman was key to his move to Maranello and his hopes for future Formula One success. Ferrari are second overall but have yet to win in nine races so far this season and there has been media speculation in Italy that Vasseur could be replaced, a suggestion the team has dismissed. "It's definitely not nice to hear that there are stories like that out there," seven-times world champion Hamilton said ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. "Firstly, I love working with Fred. Fred's the main reason I'm in this team and I got the opportunity to be here, which I'm forever grateful for. And we're in this together. "Things aren't perfect but for me, I'm here to work with the team but also with Fred. I want Fred here. I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top." Hamilton said he did not think any change was on the cards, the speculation was "nonsense" and he would be against it anyway because it took time to embed new people and to adjust. "I'm here to win with Fred and he has my full support," he added. The Briton said he would also be racing for Ferrari for "several years", addressing separate speculation that he might be considering retirement. "I'm here for the long haul," he added. "There is no question where my head's at and what I'm working towards achieving for this team. So there's zero doubts." Ferrari have not won a championship since the 2008 constructors' title and Hamilton is seeking a record eighth after missing out controversially to Max Verstappen in the final race of 2021. He joined from Mercedes in January and has yet to stand on the podium in the red overalls, although he did win a sprint race in Shanghai in March -- a highlight of Ferrari's season so far. In Spain two weeks ago the 40-year-old finished only sixth and was overtaken by Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, who was a surprise fifth. Hamilton said after that race that his Ferrari was the worst it had ever been but it emerged afterwards both he and teammate Charles Leclerc's cars had undisclosed issues that were affecting handling. "It was a bit of a relief to hear that," he said.
