N.J. car theft ring stole "millions of dollars worth" of vehicles, used Bronx garages as showrooms, authorities say

Nearly a dozen people have been arrested in a takedown of an organized car theft ring in New Jersey, authorities announced Friday.
Investigators said they found 43 luxury cars valued at more than $3.6 million in two parking garages on Jennings Street and Third Avenue in the Bronx. Authorities say the garage owners didn't know the cars were stolen.
More vehicles were found in shipping containers at ports in New Jersey and New York, bound for countries in West Africa.
Investigators say 11 people were arrested in connection with the crime ring, including a juvenile. Two more men are still being sought.

"Millions of dollars worth of stolen vehicles"
"Auto theft is certainly not unique to New Jersey. But easy access to neighboring states, to ports and international waters make us particularly susceptible to organized theft rings," New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said. "These are organized rings. They identify high-end vehicles and they use organized teams to take them, transport them and sell them."
"Millions of dollars worth of stolen vehicles—including a $475,000 Rolls Royce—were taken to a Bronx parking garage that defendants used as a showroom. The vehicles wound up in shipping containers in Elizabeth and then in West Africa," Bronx DA Darcel Clark said.
The crews were allegedly paid for the stolen vehicles with cash wired from West Africa to mid- and high-level fences, according to authorities. The vehicles were stolen from towns all over New Jersey.
Some thefts were caught on surveillance video, which shows masked men breaking into homes while residents sleep to steal key fobs, and then drive off with the high-end vehicles.
"No one should be afraid that a thief will enter their home while they are sleeping to find their key fobs to steal their car, as is alleged in this case," Platkin said.
Police said one way to catch more car thieves is with automated license plate readers. New Jersey's attorney general was notified recently that more than $1 million in funding to buy more of those readers has been cut by the federal government.

Bronx community marches in honor of Gun Violence Awareness Day after rash of shootings

Over the last few days, there have been multiple reports of gun violence in the Bronx. Hoping to make the violence stop, many went out into the community Friday, spreading the message on Gun Violence Awareness Day. "We're doing prevention, intervention, we're doing it all" Community members gathered to march for a purpose wearing bright orange shirts and chanting from the streets from La Central YMCA to St. Mary's Park in the Bronx. The march was in honor of National Gun Violence Awareness Day and to kick off Gun Violence Awareness month. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark hosted the march and a "Plant for Peace" to bed out flowers at St. Mary's Park. "Orange is the color for gun violence awareness. And we're planting on behalf of beautifying the park, but at the same time honoring those who lost their lives to gun violence," Clark said. "So every year now – those plants come back every year, they're perennials ... Every year we'll get to honor, you know, gun violence awareness as well as those lives that were lost." Clark expressed the march and planting for peace are just the beginning for the community to bloom in a new direction. "We have a strategy, where we're doing prevention, intervention, we're doing it all. But it's also something that communities can take ownership. They can say this is a gun violence free zone," she said. 5 shootings in the Bronx in 48 hours In the span of 48 hours, police responded to at least five shootings in the Bronx, leaving six people injured. Police say no arrests have been made in at least four of those five shootings. Police presence was evident throughout parts of the borough Friday evening. Several officers stood outside at least two locations where gun violence sent three teens to the hospital less than nine hours apart. On Thursday afternoon, surveillance video captured people running for cover as gunshots rang out on East 176th Street outside a grocery store. Police said two 17-year-olds were injured; one was shot in the neck and the other was shot in the right arm. Other recent victims of gun violence in the borough include a 17-year-old boy shot in the hip and a 15-year-old boy shot in the thigh. According to NYPD data, as of June 1, shooting victims and incidents are down in the Bronx by at least 18% compared to last year. You can email Erica with Bronx story ideas by CLICKING HERE.

A driver who caused the death of a 74-year-old pedestrian in a crash in Bristol last year has received a suspended sentence. Stuart Veck, 33, was driving a Peugeot 108 in Clifton on Saturday 21 December 2024 when he hit Paul Adams, who had been crossing the road, with his car. Mr Adams was taken to hospital where he died during the early hours of Christmas Eve, police said. Veck, of College Court, Fishponds, received an 18-week suspended prison sentence at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving at an earlier hearing. He also received an 18-month driving disqualification and was ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work. Emergency services had been called to the crash on Whiteladies Road shortly after 11:35 GMT on 21 December 2024. CCTV showed Veck's car was stationary before he turned right from Whiteladies Road into Alma Road and crashed into Mr Adams. Veck stopped immediately after the crash and during a police interview stated he had not seen him crossing the road.
