Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton vows to go in Game 6: ‘If I can walk, then I want to play'

New York Times5 hours ago

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tyrese Haliburton entered his postgame news conference injured and crestfallen.
The Indiana Pacers had lost 120-109 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to go down 3-2 in the series. He had hurt his right leg and struggled during the game. He had made no field goals. The Pacers' point guard acknowledged he could've played better, but make no mistake, he was going to play.

'It's the finals, man,' he said. 'I've worked my whole life to be here, and I want to be out there to compete with all my teammates any way I can. I was not great tonight by any means.
'But it's not really a thought of mine to not play here. If I can walk, then I want to play.'
In Monday night's first quarter after falling to the court, Haliburton winced and grabbed his lower right leg. He briefly left the game for treatment before returning with his leg wrapped. Haliburton eventually returned to the court and tried to contribute, but he was never quite right.
'Just trying to keep pace in the game, impact whatever way I can,' Haliburton said of his efforts in the second half. 'Just trying to get (Pascal Siakam) the ball in the right spots. Try to get the ball to guys in the right spots if I can. As far as what happened there, we have to watch film to see it.
'We feel like we did a good job in the second half of putting pace in the game, and really getting out and running.'
Haliburton's apparent injury occurred on the same leg he was seen limping on in Game 2, though he said he was uncertain whether the two injuries were connected.
'He's not 100 percent. It's pretty clear,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'But I don't think he's going to miss the next game. We were concerned at halftime, and he insisted on playing.
'I thought he made a lot of really good things happen in the second half. But he's not 100 percent. There's a lot of guys in the series that aren't. We'll evaluate everything with Tyrese and see how he wakes up tomorrow.'
After going scoreless at halftime. Haliburton finished 0-of-6 on field goals and 0-of-4 on 3-point attempts. His career playoff low of four points came on 4-of-4 free-throw shooting.
In the third quarter, veteran point guard T.J. McConnell helped swing the game's momentum toward the Pacers. McConnell, an offensive spark for Indiana, scored 18 points off the bench, including 13 in the third quarter.

Siakam drilled a 3 in the fourth quarter to help pull the Pacers within two, but the mistakes started piling up again. Just as they did in Game 4.
'Yeah, it's unfortunate,' Siakam said. 'Even with the game that we had, we still put ourselves in position (to win) at that point. We've got to take care of that — rebounding, or just those 50/50 balls, we've got to come up with it. Yeah, just that fast, it kind of like went away from us. But I thought the fight was there. We continue to fight no matter what, and we gave ourselves a chance until we made some mistakes there.'
The Pacers turned the ball over 23 times. Siakam had six turnovers, and Haliburton added three. It was another night when the Pacers just couldn't seem to get out of their own way, as turnovers and offensive rebounds plagued them all night.
'We had 23 turnovers for 32 points,' Carlisle said. 'That's the game. We've got to do a heck of a lot better there.'
While the Pacers struggled with miscues, the Thunder used them to turn the tide in their favor, stifling any small runs Indiana tried to make.
'They're good at playing with a lot of pressure at home,' guard Aaron Nesmith said. 'That's something we're going to have to do a lot better at and weather that storm.'
In addition to turnovers, rebounds were once again a sore spot for the Pacers, even though they finished with five more rebounds than the Thunder (50-45).
'We fought back, though, through all the turnovers and extra possessions we gave them and showed a lot of fight,' McConnell said. 'But no moral victories. We got to go out and protect home court.
Siakam finished with 28 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Nesmith added 14 points, six rebounds and one steal. Center Myles Turner contributed 13 points, and Obi Toppin added 12 off the bench.

For the first time in these playoffs, the Pacers have fallen behind in a series. Games 4 and 5 were their first back-to-back losses in more than three months.
Throughout this postseason, Indiana has emphasized its resilience, citing past comebacks, and expressed confidence in its ability to fight and compete at home. But with the mistakes continuing to add up, an injured Haliburton and their backs against the wall, the Pacers return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse with their magical ride seemingly nearing its end.

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Pairs Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo With 21-Year-Old Superstar originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Giannis Antetokounmpo has not requested a trade from the Milwaukee Bucks. The future Hall of Famer recently said he wants to get back to the NBA Finals with the Bucks, the only franchise he's played for. Advertisement However, if Antetokounmpo has a change of heart and decides to leave Milwaukee this offseason, one NBA analyst believes a team in the West should offer four players and four draft picks for the Bucks for The Greek Freak. Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report came up with a trade idea that lands Antetokounmpo with the San Antonio Spurs, who are led by 21-year-old superstar Victor Wembanyama: San Antonio Spurs Acquire: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Pat Connaughton Milwaukee Bucks Acquire: Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan, Stephon Castle, No. 14 pick, 2027 first-round pick (via ATL), 2029 first-round pick, 2031 first-round pick (most favorable of SAS or MIN) This NBA trade idea sends Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Spurs. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images The Bucks lost to the Indiana Pacers in the first round of this year's postseason in five games. Milwaukee has won just one postseason series since winning the 2021 championship against the Suns in six games. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Spurs haven't made the playoffs since 2019. Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, a one-time Finals MVP, a one-time Defensive Player of the Year and a nine-time All-Star. The superstar forward has career averages of 23.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks. The 30-year-old Antetokounmpo will make $54.1 million next season. The Bucks signed Antetokounmpo to a three-year, $175 million extension in October 2023. A top 75 player of all time, Antetokounmpo made the All-NBA First Team this year. He averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.2 blocks in 67 games while shooting 60.1% from the field and 61.7% from the free-throw line. How Jalen Williams took the Thunder to the brink of glory

The Oklahoma City Thunder are just one win — and potentially only 48 minutes — away from securing their second title in franchise history and first since moving from Seattle in 2008, after their 120–109 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 gave them a 3-2 lead in the NBA Finals. Jalen Williams starred for the Thunder, scoring a postseason-high 40 points, while league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 31 points and tied his postseason high with 10 assists. Together, the duo scored or assisted on 103 of Oklahoma City's 120 points. Advertisement The Thunder now have the chance to clinch the championship on Thursday night in Indianapolis. But if the Pacers can grind out a win at home with their backs against the wall, we will head back to Oklahoma City on Sunday for a Game 7. On the latest episode of 'The Athletic NBA Daily,' Dave DuFour, Es Baraheni and Zena Keita broke down the Thunder's crucial Game 5 win. They discussed how Williams took charge and stepped up, how his dominance on both ends makes him so valuable for the Thunder, and how he and Gilgeous-Alexander worked together to get Oklahoma City over the line in Game 5. They also praised Chet Holmgren's impact on the defensive end in a game where he struggled offensively. Tim Howard On Key To Team USA Achieving Success In 2026 FIFA World Cup: ‘Results Have To Get Better'

Tim Howard is arguably the greatest goalkeeper in American soccer history, so he knows a thing or two about what it takes to win. The 46-year-old was known as the 'secretary of defense' and not only played in the MLS, but made his true mark overseas with the top competition in the Premier League. Howard played a total of 13 years for Manchester United and Everton. However, he was also a longtime member of Team USA, making 121 appearances between 2002 and 2017. Team USA began Gold Cup play with a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago and will continue by playing against Saudi Arabia on Thursday. The win ended a four-game losing streak. Prior to that, Team USA had struggled in their recent games, including a 5-0 international friendly loss to Switzerland and a disastrous showing in the 2025 Concacaf Nations League, with Team USA actually losing their third-place game against Canada. 'They're trending downward,' says Howard in a one-on-one interview just prior to their win over Trinidad and Tobago. 'The togetherness that has always been a staple of the US Men's National Team needs to come to the forefront. Results have to get better. Results just haven't been good. And ultimately, teams are judged on performances and results. The Gold Cup is a really good opportunity for this group that's been put together to kind of show some of that fortitude.' Team USA will be without their best player, Christian Pulisic, and several others for the Gold Cup, including Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Sergino Desi. It marks one of the last competitive opportunities for Team USA to really gain momentum before the big one, with the 2026 World Cup starting next June. 'It's not just about the football,' says Howard. 'It's about coming together, showing toughness, being able to grind out results when needed, being able to carry games when you're in the ascendancy. You've scored the goals, and now you have to see games out. There's a lot of boxes that need to be checked, and not a lot of time to do it. The Gold Cup is a good start, a great opportunity for the team to show what they have.' Howard once again stresses the 'togetherness' as a major key if Team USA is to enter the World Cup with a chance to finish strong. In the modern era, the best finish for Team USA soccer is in the quarterfinals back in 2002. 'As you start to get into September and the autumn friendlies, and then the draw comes out – in December – you get a better idea of what that looks like tactically, you know who you're going to play against,' says Howard. 'There's a long way to go, but it's going to happen in a very short period of time, if that makes sense. The togetherness is something that all US soccer fans want to see. The togetherness, the hunger, the fight, we know the talent is there. We've seen that, so our fingers are crossed.' Leading into the FIFA World Cup, Howard will be keeping busy by partnering with Airbnb. As a part of that partnership, fans will have the opportunity to join a private training session with the goalkeeper legend, where he'll show them the ropes of what it takes to be a goalie on the field. 'I was always fortunate to be at the games,' says Howard. 'I didn't have to do anything to get there. People laugh at this, but now I'm a fan. Now I'm a fan and and I think as a fan, what people want more than anything is that connection, the connection to the game and the connection to the teams. They want more. They want more than just a ticket. They want more than just being in the seats. They want an experience, they want that travel experience." Howard explains why the partnership with Airbnb makes sense, pointing towards how the company is all about travel and accomodations. 'The takeaway for me is getting into that sports space that Airbnb is doing,' says Howard. 'It's natural, because what we find as fans, is we used to go to our local teams, We would drive to our local games, and we go home. With soccer being such a global sport, there's travel involved. When there's travel involved, you need accommodations, and Airbnb is providing that.' The 'Secretary of Defense' details how the game day experience will go, with fans literally being able to enter a real soccer stadium and play on the field to mimic what it's like playing soccer at the highest level. 'We're going to try and mimic and emulate a game day experience and what that's like, and being able to smell and touch the grass and go through pregame rituals,' says Howard. "Being in the tunnel and getting that sensation of a once-in-a-lifetime experience – very many people don't ever get that experience. 'I'm going to provide color to that in a way that very few can because you'll get when you walk out of a tunnel and you walk into an arena and you get to be on the grass, there's nothing quite like it,' Howard continues to say. 'I've tried to emulate and replicate that in other phases of my life, and you can't, it's special. What Airbnb is offering is very, very unique.'
