Nearly a billion plastic bags still used in UK annually because of loophole

Nearly a billion plastic bags are still being used in the UK each year because of an online delivery loophole, according to a new analysis.
Although the plastic bag charge has been hugely successful since its introduction in 2015, the levy has not been applied to the booming industry of online purchases.
When the charge first came into effect in England a decade ago, it was set at 5p, before being increased to 10p in 2021.
But while it led to high-street plastic bag use falling by 98 per cent over the last ten years, the number being delivered to people's doorsteps remains on the rise.
Analysis by Development Economics, commissioned by sustainable packaging business DS Smith, found that online fashion retailers delivered 941 million plastic bags to UK shoppers in 2024.
As consumers continue to migrate online, this figure is expected to increase, hitting 1.3 billion a year by 2030.
The UK is now the largest individual market for e-commerce plastic delivery bags in Europe and is estimated to have used 150 million more than second-placed Germany last year.
The new analysis comes despite the research finding half of British shoppers feel guilty about the amount of plastic their orders arrive in.
Two-thirds of Brits want plastic bags to be phased out where replacements are available, and three in five say they prefer to receive their shopping wrapped in cardboard or paper.
'Change is possible'
But some online fashion brands have already made the switch.
Zalando, a major European online retailer for fashion and lifestyle, has been using paper shipping bags made from recycled content and FSC-certified virgin fibres instead of plastic bags since 2020.
Stefano Rossi, of DS Smith, said other online fashion retailers should follow suit.
She said: 'While online shopping has grown, e-commerce retailers lag high-street stores when it comes to replacing plastic bags.
'Brands like Zalando have proved change is possible, but there is a blocker; there simply aren't enough paper alternatives available and our industry needs to step up to provide them.
'It will be tempting for businesses to fixate on price, but sticking with plastic comes at a cost – consumers don't want it, and brands risk their reputation by ignoring that.
'We think legislation can and should be more demanding of us all – phasing out certain plastics to help create a level playing field that encourages innovation, investment, and generates healthy competition to replace plastic.'
Only 9 per cent of the fashion e-commerce bags delivered across the UK are currently being reused or recycled, with 857 million bags ending up in landfill or incineration last year, according to the research.
The analysis found that growth in e-commerce and slow progress on increasing recycling rates will mean that by 2030, more than 1 billion plastic bags will end up in landfill or being burned annually.

As death tolls rise and destruction spreads, many Brits will be concerned about where it's all going to end – and wonder if we're likely to see a repeat of three years ago. Asked if the government could step in to pay steep energy bills, as the Conservatives did in 2022, Chancellor Rachel Reeves told the BBC: 'I'm not taking anything off the table.' However, she cautioned: 'We're not anywhere near that stage at the moment – indeed, in July, average energy bills are going to come down by about £100 a year.' Following Israel's attack on Iranian nuclear and military sites on Friday, the cost of a price of a barrel of oil jumped sharply. But there's a risk the knock-on effects for Brits are much more broad. The increase in energy prices largely resulting from Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 was so significant, the government decided to step in and offer an 'energy price guarantee'. If it had not, the price cap for bills could have been pushed north of £4,000 for the typical household. The invasion pushed oil prices to almost $130 a barrel, meaning costs to suppliers soared, and that was passed down to customers. After an initial jump of 10% after Israel's first strikes on Friday, the cost of a barrel of oil has dropped back to $75 – lower than it was in January. But the big question is whether this conflict will continue for more than a few days or a couple of weeks. That could result in higher prices on a more sustained level, which could feed through to bills. The Bank of England's base interest rate has a direct impact on households across the country, as it is widely used to set the interest rate on mortgages. It's also used by the Bank to try and push down inflation when it gets a bit too high – when the interest rate is increased, people spend less in the economy, which brings down inflation. Since inflation in the UK has fallen from its extreme high in 2022, the Bank has steadily decreased its interest rate over the past year, easing the pressure on people with a mortgage to pay. But high energy prices mean items in shops get more expensive, and if they become more expensive than they were a year ago – well, that's the definition of inflation. Dr Muhammad Ali Nasir, an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Leeds, explained the potential impact. He told Metro: 'If the increase in energy prices causes another round of sharp increase in inflation, the central bank could change the direction of their policy and start to increase the interest rates again, causing more pain to the household and firms in terms of their borrowing costs.' A sustained increase in energy prices would be enough to increase the cost of a weekly shop in the UK on its own. But that's not the only way the conflict between Israel and Iran could have an impact. There have been concerns Iran could try to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital supply line for global oil as it links the oil fields of the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and wider ocean. But Dr Nasir suggested events could lead Iran's Houthi allies to step up their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, which leads to the Suez Canal. He said: 'This could be a massive shock to global trade which is already suffering due to the [US-China] trade war. On top of that, the economist said there is a 'sharp increase in the uncertainty around the economic and trade policy due to the conflict' as the world wonders what will happen next. 'Overall, this conflict is the last thing the global economy wants at the moment,' he said, before adding: 'Of course, loss of human life is an even bigger issue.' A mother who died in the Air India plane crash had been reluctant to travel and feared leaving her young son behind for the first time, a colleague has said. Abdhiben Patel, known as Abdhi, 40, was killed when flight AI171 crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on Thursday. She had flown to India just two weeks earlier to care for her elderly mother, but was hesitant to make the trip and leave her eight-year-old son behind. 'She didn't want to go,' said Atif Karim, 45, her colleague and close friend at Zone Beauty Studio in Northampton. 'She told me, 'I just don't like being away from him'. It was her first time leaving him, and she was very nervous.' 'She wasn't excited,' he added. 'It was a sense of duty. Her mum was unwell, but you could tell it was weighing on her.' Mr Karim, a father of two, said recent tensions between India and Pakistan, which led to flight cancellations and uncertainty, had added to Mrs Patel's worries. 'All the flights were getting cancelled,' he said. 'It didn't feel like the right time.' Because her husband Pankaj worked night shifts, Mrs Patel was inseparable from their son Meer, he said. 'She kept saying how shy and reserved he is, how attached they were,' he added. 'She was totally devoted to him – her entire world revolved around him.' Mrs Patel had planned to return to work on Saturday. The day before the crash, she had messaged Mr Karim to check in about a task and offer to help finish it remotely. 'She said, 'Do you want me to finish that?' and later, 'Don't worry, I'll sort it,'' he said. 'That was the last I heard.' Originally from Gujarat, she moved to the UK in 2012 and joined the salon in 2016. She worked her way up over the years and had been managing the business for the last three. 'She was the most diligent, reliable worker I've ever had,' Mr Karim said. 'But more than that, she was our friend.' 'She was bubbly, kind, always smiling – she had a way of putting people at ease and always took a genuine interest in their lives.' 'She got on with everyone and left a real mark on the people she worked with and the customers she served. 'Yesterday, we had people coming in and crying their eyes out.' Inside the salon, he said the mood has changed, Mr Karim said. 'There's no music playing anymore,' he said. 'The staff are devastated. My colleague burst into tears when she walked in. 'Everyone's just heartbroken.' Mrs Patel's husband and son are now in India, where efforts are still ongoing to identify victims and return remains to grieving families. Authorities have since begun handing over remains after identifying some through DNA testing. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner had crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off, killing 241 people on board and at least 29 on the ground. Only one passenger – a 40-year-old British man – survived. A fundraiser has since been launched to support Mrs Patel's grieving husband and son, raising more than £4,000 in its first few days. The campaign is hoping to reach £50,000.

A big menu change at the fast food chain is set to arrive on June 18. McDonald's will be swapping out the current limited-edition menu items and welcoming back four fan-favourites and debuting a brand new burger. The new item has been hailed as the 'most McDonald's burger ever' and is called the Big Arch, a name it wholeheartedly deserves as it's even bigger and wider than the classic Big Mac. The beast of a burger (£7.99 on its own or £9.99 for a Medium Meal) features new Big Arch sauce, two Quarter Pounder beef patties, three slices of white cheddar cheese, crispy onions, slivered onions, pickles and lettuce, all stacked up (somewhat precariously) in a sesame and poppy seed bun.
