Police get more time to question Liverpool suspect

Yahoo4 days ago

Police have been given extra time to question a man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car ploughed into football fans during Liverpool's Premier League victory parade.
Seven people remain in hospital and 79 casualties have been identified after the incident involving a Ford Galaxy on Water Street shortly after 18:00 BST on Monday.
Merseyside Police said it had been given more time to question a 53-year-old man from the West Derby area, who was also detained on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs.
The force said the vehicle had followed an ambulance, which had been responding to reports of someone having a heart attack, into the road.
Police said they had now spoken to 14 more people who had been injured after reporting 65 were hurt at a news conference on Tuesday.
Officers confirmed they had been granted further time to continue questioning the suspect until Thursday.
Det Supt Rachel Wilson said: "I'm pleased to say the number of people in hospital is reducing as they continue to recover from the awful incident.
"We continue to support those still receiving treatment and as part of our ongoing enquiries we are identifying more people who were injured."
She said detectives were making "significant progress" in establishing the full circumstances that led to what happened.
Extensive CCTV inquiries are being carried out across the city to establish the movements of the Ford Galaxy before the incident took place, she added.
Water Street reopened earlier after the aftermath of the parade and the incident was cleaned up overnight.
Some flowers and cards from well wishes have been left as a reminder of the events which unfolded.
Hundreds of thousands of jubilant Liverpool fans packed the city centre on Bank Holiday Monday and lined the 10-mile (16km) parade route as the Reds celebrated winning their second Premier League crown and 20th top-flight league title.

Liverpool Target Former Allies and Fan Favourite for Assistant Role

Liverpool Begin Search to Replace Departing Heitinga After Ajax Move Coaching Carousel Continues at Anfield Liverpool are preparing for another backroom reshuffle after confirming that assistant coach John Heitinga is set to leave the club and take over as Ajax's new head coach, suggest reports from The Echo. Heitinga, who joined Arne Slot's coaching team just last summer, quickly established himself as a key figure as Liverpool stormed to a record-equalling 20th league title. Advertisement Ajax moved quickly following Francesco Farioli's resignation, which came in the wake of a catastrophic collapse that saw his team squander a nine-point lead in the final five Eredivisie games, gifting the title to PSV Eindhoven. For Heitinga, this marks a return to familiar territory. Having begun his playing and managerial career in Amsterdam, he now steps into a high-pressure role with expectations already mounting. Photo: IMAGO Slot Backs His Departing Lieutenant Speaking on the links last week, Slot said: 'If Ajax would be smart, they would consider him. He is ready to take on a job like that. If John is smart, he would stay one more season.' Advertisement That reluctant praise reflected both admiration and a desire to keep a trusted ally close. However, Slot will now be forced to act swiftly with pre-season on the horizon and Liverpool keen to maintain continuity in their tactical evolution. Candidates in the Frame Marino Pusic, a long-time associate of Slot from his AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord days, is a leading candidate. Fresh from a domestic double and Ukrainian Cup success with Shakhtar Donetsk, Pusic ticks the boxes for both familiarity and pedigree. Etienne Reijnen, who was blocked by work permit issues last summer, could be reconsidered. Another name linked is former fan-favourite Dirk Kuyt, who is expected to leave Beerschot following their relegation from the Belgian Juliper Pro League. Strategic Importance of This Appointment Liverpool's choice of Heitinga's replacement will be critical, not just for preserving last season's momentum but for embedding Slot's identity into the long-term structure at Anfield. With an early July pre-season start looming, the club must act decisively. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis From a Liverpool fan's perspective, the departure of John Heitinga feels more like a commendable graduation than a setback. He was a quiet but effective presence under Slot, and his move to Ajax shows the calibre of staff the Reds are attracting. Advertisement 'If we're producing coaches who are getting headhunted by Ajax, we must be doing something right,' one fan remarked in the Kop bar after the news broke. The potential candidates bring intrigue. Pusic's recent silverware in Ukraine is not to be ignored. If he can adapt quickly, the Slot-Pusic reunion could be seamless. Reijnen, despite his previous permit issues, also remains an attractive proposition for continuity. And then there's Dirk Kuyt. A cult hero at Anfield, but is sentiment clouding judgement? His track record as a coach isn't glittering, and stepping into such a tactical role might be a big leap. That said, his passion, understanding of the club, and bond with fans can't be measured by trophies alone. One thing is clear – this summer's assistant appointment matters. If Slot is to build a dynasty, choosing the right right-hand man is just as vital as selecting the starting XI.

Bird lovers horrified by maimed seagull 'trend' as remains scattered across roads in North Wales

Bird lovers have been left horrified by a brutal new 'trend'. Campaigners claim they have mounting evidence people are deliberately throwing food onto roads and watching on as hungry seagulls swoop down, only to get hit by vehicles. Volunteers working for the Caernarfon-based Foundation for Feathered Friends (FFF) are reporting a rising number of apparent incidents on the North Wales coast. While some are said to involve youths, the charity claimed adults have also been seen enticing gulls onto busy roads, North Wales Live reports. FFF founder Denise Theophilus said the charity was often left to pick up the pieces. 'We totally support the feeding of wild birds, especially gulls,' she said. 'Often they are emaciated when they arrive in coastal communities. But this is not the right way to do it. We are aware that children will get up to all kinds of mischief – but adults doing this must have some kind of psychiatric issue. 'It's definitely a trend, we're seeing more and more instances of it happening. And it's us that have to pick up the poor gulls wounded by monsters like these.' According to Denise, volunteers have reported examples from Abergele, Prestatyn, Rhyl and Llandudno. Given the number of casualties being treated by North Wales Wild Bird Care, FFF's sister group, she believes it is probably happening elsewhere. In one instance, Denise claimed food had been carefully laid out on a street in Rhyl. She said three car-hit gulls were found lying dead 'equidistantly' near the food. A fourth was still alive but later died. 'One of our volunteers was driving through Llandudno when she saw a group of youths throwing food onto a road,' she said. 'They were laughing as they watched cars come towards the gulls. She wanted to go back and disperse the kids but her husband didn't want to get involved.' Wind-blown litter is another reason why gulls dice with death on busy roads – social media videos have highlighted the dangers of carelessly discarded food cartons. However there's little online evidence of gratuitous clips showing gulls being deliberately enticed onto roads. Denise claimed the practice has been witnessed outside schools and in retail car parks. When images were shared online, bird lovers were left 'sickened' by the claims. One person called the practice 'shameful and inhuman', another said it was 'utterly disgraceful'. A man claimed some motorists deliberately target gulls. He said: 'I've seen a few birds, mainly gulls, laying in the road that have been run over on purpose." Herring gulls are a protected species and are on the Red List for Conservation. The RSPCA said people need to be careful when disposing of edible litter. A spokesperson said: 'Gulls can get a bad rap especially in seaside towns, and sadly are thought of by some as a pest. 'However, they are simply wild animals trying to survive in their surroundings, and deserve our kindness and respect. It's important for people to remember that they are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and it is illegal to intentionally harm any wild bird, except under licence.' The RSPCA gives the following advice on living in harmony with gulls: In some seaside towns where people have fed gulls, they have learned to snatch food. Try to keep food to yourself but don't blame them if they can't tell the difference between scraps willingly offered and your bag of chips. Dispose of edible litter carefully – put it in gull-proof litter bins. Plastic bags left in the street are an open invitation for gulls to investigate. Gulls that swoop suddenly on people or pets are usually trying to protect chicks that have got out of the nest. If you see a gull chick leave it alone – its parents can look after it better than you. Gulls make the most noise between May and July when they are breeding. If gulls on your roof disturb you, or you are worried they may block a gas flue, you can prevent them from nesting there in future. Your local environmental health department or pest control company should be able to tell you about the devices available. It's illegal to disturb wild birds' nests and eggs, except under licence.

More than 1,000 migrants cross Channel in a day

More than 1,100 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel on Saturday, the highest number recorded on a single day so far in 2025. The latest Home Office figures showed 1,194 people arrived in 18 small boats. This year could see a new record set, with the number of arrivals so far being the highest recorded in the first five months of a year. On Sky News' Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Defence Secretary John Healey said Britain had "lost control of its borders over the last five years". The most recent arrivals bring the annual total so far to 14,811, up 42% on this time last year and 95% up from the same point in 2023. Almost 37,000 people crossed the Channel in small boats in 2024 but the highest figures were for 2022, when 45,755 people arrived. The highest daily total of arrivals since data began in 2018 was 1,305, which was recorded on 3 September, 2022. Healey called the scenes of migrants being picked up by smugglers "like a taxi" to be brought to the UK "shocking". He said an agreement was in place with French authorities, who rescued 184 on Saturday, to change the way they worked. "Our concentration now is to push them to get that into operation so they can intercept these smugglers and stop these people in the boats, not just on the shore," Healey added. A Home Office spokesperson said: "We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security. "The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay, and we will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice. "That is why this government has put together a serious plan to take down these networks at every stage." Additional reporting from PA Media. Follow BBC Kent on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
