Arts and crafts charity boosted by sale of Rembrandt etching for £225,200
A Rembrandt etching which went under the hammer as part of an auction of internet entrepreneur and philanthropist Hugo Burge's collection has sold for £225,200.
Mr Burge, who died in 2023 aged 51, built up a collection of fine art, ceramics and handcrafted furniture which was on display in his homes at Marchmont House in the Scottish Borders and in London.
Selected works from the collection were sold at a Lyon & Turnbull auction live in Edinburgh and online on Wednesday, raising funds for the Hugo Burge Foundation.
The most valuable item in the sale, an etching from 1643 by the Dutch Old Master Rembrandt van Rijn titled The Three Trees, sold for £225,200, including buyer's premium.
The etching, widely considered to be one of the artist's greatest landscapes, had been estimated at between £200,000 and £300,000.
An embroidered panel by renowned Arts and Crafts designer and activist William Morris titled Vine And Acanthus, from 1890, sold for £25,200.
Author and broadcaster Dr James Fox, creative director of the Hugo Burge Foundation, said: 'Hugo was an astute businessman, an enlightened collector and a tireless evangelist for the arts – a man whose enthusiasm and generosity touched the lives of innumerable people and transformed the cultural landscape of the Scottish Borders.
'His philanthropic endeavours are now continued by the Hugo Burge Foundation, a charity which supports the arts, crafts and creative industries all over the United Kingdom. The proceeds from this sale will be used to advance its charitable work.
'From a childhood admiration for Ernest Gimson's furniture to a recent delight in Japanese Imari vases, Hugo's collecting was rooted in an eye for excellence and a deeply felt belief in creativity.'
Established by Mr Burge in 2019 and later renamed in his honour, the Hugo Burge Foundation offers awards, hosts events, runs courses and funds apprenticeships, providing free studios and workspaces for artists and craftspeople in the Scottish Borders.
Gavin Strang, managing director of Lyon & Turnbull, said: 'Having known Hugo for many years and worked with him on several projects, Lyon & Turnbull is honoured to play a part in celebrating and developing his legacy.
'We hope the auction will encourage others to enjoy collecting and to support creative people, just as Hugo did.'

A couple of weeks after announcing their annual list of the world's 51-100 best restaurants, the much-anticipated guide to the best of the best has landed. World's 50 Best announced their winners at a ceremony in Turin last night, and Maido, a restaurant in Lima, Peru, was named the best restaurant on the planet. It's the 23rd edition of the awards, and restaurants from 32 cities across 22 different countries made the ranking, including 10 new entries. The restaurant takes its name from a Japanese phrase used by people to greet each other: 'maido', and is run by chef Mitsuharu 'Micha' Tsumura, the son of Japanese immigrants who formally trained in the US. Royal makes first appearance after horror horse accident left her hospitalised
The heir to the Dutch throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia, has returned to her royal engagements just one week after undergoing surgery to fix a major injury caused by falling off her horse. The 21-year-old princess, and keen equestrian, was rushed to hospital after she fell off her horse and broke her upper arm. Catharina-Amalia, the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, was taken to a hospital in the city of Utrecht, where she underwent surgery. The Dutch Palace later confirmed that the princess had suffered a "fracture to her upper arm" and was recovering in hospital. Sporting a sling to support her injured arm, Catharina-Amalia made her return to royal duties on Wednesday, joining her father to attend the presentation of a new standard to the Princess Catharina-Amalia Hussar Regiment at the Prince Bernhard Barracks in Amersfoort. At the royal outing, both Princess Catharina-Amalia and her father spoke with the troops and posed for a photo with the soldiers, before the King delivered a rousing speech. The princess wore a red floral midi dress to the royal engagement, and despite the dress having long sleeves, onlookers noticed that the princess's arm was still in a bandage, and was being supported by a sling placed around her neck. The young princess spoke to local media at the event, and admitted she would not be able to get back on her horse "anytime soon". Speaking after the accident, King Willem-Alexander spoke of his daughter's bravery, saying: "I can say that I was very impressed by how brave she was with immense pain. And that she took it very calmly. We are very proud of her, how she got through the operation." While the princess does take part in occasional royal engagements as she is destined to be Queen, she is still a university student, currently studying for a degree in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics at the University of Amsterdam. It is believed the young princess was living in student accommodation when she started her studies, but in 2022, she was forced to move back to the Hague after fears she could have been kidnapped by organised gangs. She was placed under heightened security due to concern that she could be targeted by criminals. Her mother, Queen Maxima, said in a candid interview with Dutch news outlet AD at the time of the threats: "No student life for her, like other students have. I'm very proud of her and how she keeps it all going. It makes me a bit emotional. It's not nice to see your child live like that. She can go to university, but that's it." Amalia has been heir to the throne in the Netherlands since 2013 when her father King Willem-Alexander became King. She has two younger sisters Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane.
