IIT-Bombay powers up breakthrough research in solar tech and energy storage

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) and Indus Towers Limited, one of the world's largest telecom infrastructure company, today inked an agreement for two transformative research initiatives in sustainable energy. The research will primarily focus on advancing solar power generation and energy storage, aiming to create visionary and viable solutions. Research on Perovskite Solar Cell technology and utilising agricultural waste for energy storage is an exciting concept and could become crucial in advancing sustainable energy solutions. We are confident that the research has the potential to revolutionise our approach to clean energy."The pioneering effort to develop Perovskite Solar Cell technology aims at surpassing the limitations of conventional silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells. This next-generation technology is designed to achieve higher efficiency without increasing the existing cell cost. It has extensive applications in both terrestrial and space-based solar systems, developed entirely through indigenous efforts.advertisement
The second initiative under this collaboration addresses another critical sustainability challenge-agricultural waste and energy storage. The project aims to develop a scalable method to convert rice straw, an abundant agricultural residue, into doped hard carbon materials. These materials will serve as anodes or additives in sodium-ion batteries, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion technology. This research not only mitigates the environmental hazards of stubble burning but also strengthens the country's clean energy ecosystem by utilizing indigenous, eco-friendly resources.Commenting on the broader vision of the partnership, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, said, "At IIT Bombay, we believe that scientific excellence must be anchored in purpose. Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, has announced an unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, his alma mater from the 1970s. On Friday, Ambani spent over three hours at the institute, formerly known as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), attending an event to unveil Divine Scientist , the biography of Professor MM Sharma. When speaking of 'Guru Dakshina', Ambani announced the unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to ICT according to the instructions of Prof. Sharma. Why Didn't Mukesh Ambani Choose IIT-Bombay? Ambani said, 'Coming to the UDCT campus always feels like visiting a sacred temple. Professor Sharma, I honor you as my most respected teacher, my guide, and a source of inspiration.' Praising Patil, he added, 'Writing about the life of a great personality like Sharma is an immensely challenging task.' Talking about his decision, Ambani said, 'I chose UDCT over IIT-Bombay.' He shared that his decision became firm after attending Sharma's first lecture. 'I realized he was an alchemist not of metals, but of minds. He possesses the ability to transform curiosity into knowledge, knowledge into commercial value, and both knowledge and commercial value into everlasting wisdom.' Ambani credited Professor Sharma for the growth of India's chemical industry and referred to him as the 'National Guru.' Prof. Sharma impressed upon the policymakers that the only way for India to grow was to unshackle Indian industry from license-permit-raj which will allow Indian players to build scale, reduce dependence on imports and compete globally. 'Like my father Dhirubhai Ambani, he had a burning desire to change Indian industry from scarcity to global leadership,' said Ambani. IIT-BHU increases 111 seats in popular depts for JEE qualified students

Varanasi: The Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, has increased 111 seats in its most popular departments for students qualifying through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). For the 2025-26 academic year, the institute will offer a total of 1,589 seats for the first-year students, the same as last year. However, seats were moved around to better meet the demand. Specifically, 111 seats were reduced in four departments—ceramic engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, and pharmaceutical engineering & technology—and given to nine high-demand departments like computer science and engineering, electronics engineering, mathematics and computing. Four departments remained unaffected. IIT-BHU director prof Amit Patra said, "We are constantly working to ensure that our academic offerings match the aspirations of our students and the needs of the industry. This reallocation of seats in high-demand departments will provide more opportunities for talented students to pursue their chosen fields and contribute meaningfully to technological advancement and nation-building." As per the count provided by the institute, as compared to the 2024-25 session, the number of seats in 2025-26 reduced from 14 to 41 in ceramic engineering, metallurgical, mining, and pharmaceutical engineering. The maximum reduction in the figure of seats—41—was in mining engineering. The seats increased from three to 22 in chemical engineering, civil, computer science, electrical, electronics, mechanical, architecture, biochemical, bioengineering, materials science and technology, mathematics and computing, engineering physics, and industrial chemistry. The number of total seats (1,589) is unchanged.

Lok Sabha Speaker to open IIT Jodhpur hall, release science comic series tomorrow

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will visit the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur on Monday to inaugurate the newly constructed Lecture Hall Complex –II and release a comic series to popularise science. This visit by the Lok Sabha Speaker is being seen as an important initiative to expand the reach of higher education, innovation, and science to the masses. On this occasion, the Lok Sabha Speaker will also release the 'Science Through Play' comic series, designed to popularise science. This series is an innovative effort to connect children and youth with scientific thinking in a simple and engaging language. Om Birla will inaugurate the institute's Lecture Hall Complex - II in the presence of Rajya Sabha member Rajendra Gehlot, social worker Nimbaram, renowned space scientist and Chairperson of IIT Jodhpur's Board of Governors A.S. Kiran Kumar, IIT Jodhpur Director Avinash K. Agarwal, and Deputy Director Bhabani K. Satpathy. A.S. Kiran Kumar will preside over the programme, said a statement. Constructed at a cost of Rs 14.80 crore, this state-of-the-art Lecture Hall Complex at IIT Jodhpur is expected to give a new direction to the Institute's academic and research activities. During his visit, Om Birla will also distribute the 'Research Initiative Grant', aimed at encouraging researchers and innovation-related projects. In addition, he will launch the Institute's new official website. The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur), located in Rajasthan, is a premier technical institute established by the Union Government in 2008. It is known for delivering high-quality engineering education, research, and innovation. IIT Jodhpur functions from its sprawling residential Permanent Campus of 852 acres on National Highway 65, north-northwest of Jodhpur towards Nagaur. This campus is meticulously planned and envisioned to stand as a symbol of academics.
