Windows' infamous ‘blue screen of death' will soon turn black

Nearly every Windows user has had a run-in with the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death' at some point in their computing life. Now, after more than 40 years of being set against a very recognizable blue, the updated error message will soon be displayed across a black background.
The changes to the notorious error screen come as part of broader efforts by Microsoft to improve the resiliency of the Windows operating system in the wake of last year's CrowdStrike incident, which crashed millions of Windows machines worldwide.
'Now it's easier than ever to navigate unexpected restarts and recover faster,' Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft wrote in a Wednesday announcement.
As part of that effort, Microsoft says it's 'streamlining' what users experience when encountering 'unexpected restarts' that cause disruptions. And that means a makeover to the infamous error screen.
Beyond the now-black background, Windows' new 'screen of death' has a slightly shorter message. It's also no longer accompanied by a frowning face — and instead shows a percentage completed for the restart process.
Microsoft says this 'simplified' user interface for unexpected restarts will be available later this summer on all of its Windows 11 (version 24H2) devices.
And for PCs that may not restart successfully, Microsoft on Wednesday also said it's adding a 'quick machine recovery' mechanism. The will be particularly useful for during a widespread outage, the tech giant noted, as Microsoft 'can broadly deploy targeted remediations' and automate fixes with this new mechanism 'without requiring complex manual intervention from IT.'
Microsoft said this quick machine recovery will also be 'generally available' later this summer on Window 11 — with additional capabilities set to launch later in the year.

Broadcom's Semiconductor Solutions Accelerate: What Lies Ahead?

Broadcom 's AVGO semiconductor solutions segment is gaining momentum. In the second quarter of fiscal 2025, semiconductor revenues surged to $8.4 billion, up 17% year over year, driven by its booming AI-semiconductor business, which jumped 46% to $4.4 billion. This marks nine consecutive quarters of strong AI chip growth, positioning the company as a key player in next-generation AI infrastructure through custom silicon and networking chips. Strong demand for Broadcom's high-value offerings is translating into healthier margins. The semiconductor solutions segment's gross margin rose to 69%, up 140 basis points (bps) year over year, while its operating margin reached 57%, an expansion of 200 bps. These results highlight the strength of the company's product mix, especially in custom AI silicon and advanced networking chips. Much of the growth is being driven by hyperscale customers, who rely on Broadcom's custom ASICs and Ethernet-based networking solutions to scale AI workloads. Remarkably, the company's new Tomahawk 6 Ethernet switch and AI-optimized ASICs/XPUs have gained early traction across top data center clients. Broadcom expects third-quarter fiscal 2025 AI-semiconductor revenues of $5.1 billion. Broadcom Faces Stiff Competition Broadcom is facing stiff competition from the likes of Advanced Micro Devices AMD and NVIDIA NVDA. AMD is becoming a strong competitor to Broadcom in the AI and data center chip market with its high-performance EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs. AMD's acquisition of Xilinx expanded its reach into embedded markets, adding FPGAs, Adaptive SoCs and ACAP products to its portfolio, boosting its versatility in AI and computing applications. NVIDIA dominates the semiconductor industry through its leadership in GPUs for AI, machine learning and high-performance computing. NVIDIA's new Blackwell chip series strengthens this position, as major cloud providers increasingly rely on NVIDIA GPUs for AI training and inference. NVIDIA holds a key edge with its CUDA software platform and proprietary AI models. Why Palantir Stock Is Sinking Today

Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) stock is losing ground in Friday's trading. The company's share price was down 4% at 12:40 p.m. ET despite the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite being up 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively, at the same point in the day's trading. Palantir's valuation is retreating a bit today as investors take profits after an incredible bull run. Recent news that the U.S. defense budget will be slightly smaller this year than last may also be a factor. Palantir falls after hitting new high Palantir stock hit a new record high in yesterday's trading after the company announced that it had entered into a $100 million new contract to co-develop a new artificial intelligence (AI) software system with The Nuclear Company to facilitate nuclear construction projects. Some investors are taking profits on the stock, and the selling action is pushing the company's share price lower. Investors may also be reacting to the Department of Defense's budget request for a base budget of $848.3 billion for its 2026 fiscal year, which represents a small decrease over the previous budget after accounting for inflation. Even with today's pullback, Palantir stock is still up 83% across 2025's trading. What's next for Palantir? With today's pullback, Palantir now has a market capitalization of roughly $328 billion and is valued at approximately 239 times this year's expected earnings and 84 times expected sales. While the company's highly growth-dependent valuation potentially opens the door for big sell-offs if business performance comes in weaker than anticipated or macroeconomic conditions take a turn for the worse, the company has been posting impressive results and has a long runway for continued expansion. Palantir is a high-risk, high-reward investment, but its competitive advantages suggest that the stock could still be a winner for long-term investors. First Nations say Alberta data centre approach won't attract big tech players

A sign is displayed on a Google building at their campus in Mountain View, Calif., on Sept. 24, 2019. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu, File) The chiefs of four First Nations in Alberta say they're eager to take part in the province's nascent data centre industry, but the province is taking the wrong approach to attract large-scale tech players. The chiefs of the Alexander First Nation, Paul First Nation, Enoch Cree Nation and Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation outlined their concerns in an open letter to Premier Danielle Smith and members of her government. Data centres are huge facilities housing the computing firepower needed for artificial intelligence and other applications. They take an enormous amount of power to run and cool them. The Alberta Electric System Operator said earlier this month that it has received requests from 29 proposed data centre projects representing more than 16,000 megawatts — more than 11 times the City of Edmonton's load. It said it will allow the connection of up to 1,200 megawatts of large load projects between now and 2028 to ensure the reliability of Alberta's grid. The chiefs wrote that companies like Meta or Amazon don't build small, and the limit sends a signal that Alberta is not ready to meet those companies' needs or see a flagship project come to fruition. --- Lauren Krugel, The Canadian Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 27, 2025.
