Dy Mayor distributes books, uniforms to students
Hyderabad: With the schools reopening on Thursday, the Greater Hyderabad Deputy Mayor Mothe Srilatha Shoban Reddy distributed textbooks and uniforms provided by the state government among students of Government school in Tarnaka. This was under the Badi Bata 2025 programme.
On this occasion, the Deputy Mayor highlighted various government schemes aimed at shaping the future of students. These include digital classrooms, fully equipped labs for science, mathematics, and English, vocational courses - binding, electrical work, tailoring, free mid-day meals, free uniforms and textbooks, free medical check-ups, free bus passes, scholarships for SC/ST and minority students, and computer classes for students from grades VI to X.

IGNOU introduces its first master's programme in Home Science
The Indira Gandhi National Open University has announced its first master's programme in Home Science – MSc in Community Development and Extension Management. The course is designed to fulfil the educational aspirations of Home Science graduates and graduates from other disciplines who wish to become development practitioners and implement community development projects for livelihoods, skilling and beyond. The two-year course is hosted by the School of Continuing Education in English medium with an Open Distance Learning mode. Students will have the opportunity to learn the nuances of extension, development communication, social and behavioural change, advocacy, resource mobilisation, participatory media, gender mainstreaming, maternal and child health, community-based research, and interdisciplinary areas of Home Science in this programme, as mentioned in the press release. Applicants for this programme can be graduates of Home Science / Community Sciences, Social Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, Sciences or any other discipline, who wish to pursue careers in the development sector. Those learners with a science background can also benefit from this programme as it will help them in leveraging scientific knowledge towards community development. In the MSc. 1st year curriculum, students will get knowledge of foundational and applied knowledge in development studies and community extension. The courses included are Fundamentals of Development and Extension (MHC-001), a theory paper carrying 6 credits, and Community Organisation and Community Development (MHC-002), also a theory course with 4 credits. The programme further offers Media in Development Communication (MDC-003) and Development: Information and Communication Technologies (MDC-005), each contributing 6 credits as theory subjects. Additionally, students will study Programme Planning and Evaluation (MHC-003) and Participatory Community Development (MHC-004), both theory courses valued at 4 credits each. The curriculum includes a practical component titled Field Project in Home Science (MHCP-001), which carries 4 credits. Students are required to choose between Gender and Development: Concept, Approaches and Strategies (MGS-001) and Rural Development Programmes (MRD-202), both theory courses offering 6 credits. This curriculum structure ensures a balanced blend of theoretical understanding and field-based application essential for professionals in the field of development and community extension. The MSc. 2nd year curriculum in Home Science, specialising in Community Development and Extension Management, offers a comprehensive set of theory and project-based courses aimed at equipping students with advanced knowledge and practical skills. The courses include Community Sciences and Community Development: Emerging Issues (MHC-005), a theory paper carrying 8 credits, and Training and Development (MDV-110), a theory course with 6 credits. Students also study Management of Maternal and Child Health (MHC-006) for 4 credits and Social and Behaviour Change (MHC-007), which carries 6 credits. Further, the curriculum includes Research Methods in Community Development and Extension Management (MHC-008) valued at 4 credits, and a Research Project in Home Science (MHCP-002), a project-based course carrying 6 credits. Students have an elective option to choose between Fundamentals of CSR (MEDS-051) and Rural Development: Issues and Concerns (MHC-009), both theory courses offering 6 credits each. All courses, except the elective, are compulsory. This year, the Karnataka SSLC Exam 2 was conducted from May 26 to June 2, 2025. The results were declared on June 13. A total of 278355 students appeared for the SSLC 2 exam of which 84597 cleared it taking the overall pass percentage to 30.39 per cent. Meanwhile, the Karnataka SSLC Exam 1 result was announced on April 30, 2025. A total of 8,42,173 candidates appeared for the exam, out of which 5,24,984 students successfully passed. This resulted in an overall pass percentage of 62.34 per cent. The pass percentage for freshers is 66.14 per cent, while private repeaters had a significantly lower pass percentage of just 5 per cent. Girls once again outperformed boys, recording a higher pass percentage of 74 per cent. Among the 3,90,311 boys who took the exam, 2,26,637 passed, resulting in a pass percentage of 58.07 per cent. In comparison, 2,96,438 out of 4,00,579 girls cleared the exam. Notably, 22 students achieved a perfect score of 625 out of 625 marks, including two students from government schools.

New NCERT class 8 textbook features stories of real-life Indian heroes
New Delhi: From India's first Param Vir Chakra awardee to the country's first female particle physicist, the recently revamped National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Class 8 English textbook now features stories of individuals who have made an impact on society. The new book titled Poorvi includes tales of Major Somnath Sharma, India's first Param Vir Chakra awardee; Verghese Kurien, the 'Father of the White Revolution'; and Bibha Chowdhuri, India's first female particle physicist and a trailblazer for women in science, among many others. The new textbook, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023, has five thematic units that comprise stories, poems, conversations, and narrative and descriptive pieces aimed at inspiring children with themes of courage, kindness, critical thinking, service, curiosity, and perseverance. Written by Kirti Kapur, professor of English and member-coordinator in the department of education in languages of NCERT, New Delhi, the initial section that introduces the book reads, 'Themes, such as wit and wisdom, values and dispositions, mystery and magic, environment, and science and curiosity have been included. Cross-cutting themes, such as Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), values, heritage, gender sensitivity, and inclusion have been integrated into all the units.' The third unit — Mystery and Magic — highlights the power of intelligence, creativity, and nature's wonders through different poems and narrative stories, while the fourth unit — Environment — features poems by Indian authors Ruskin Bond, Sarojini Naidu, and Kamakshi Balasubramanian. Under unit five — Science and Curiosity — students will read chapters like Bibha Chowdhuri: The Beam of Light that Lit the Path for Women in Indian Science, which 'highlights renowned scientists and their contributions, promoting discussions on scientific advancements.'
