Arab-Islamic delegation urges end to Israel's war on Gaza in Paris talks - Foreign Affairs
An Arab-Islamic ministerial delegation met French foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot in Paris on Friday to discuss international efforts to end Israel's war on Gaza and secure urgent humanitarian aid for the territory's population.
The delegation—comprising the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan—called for an immediate halt to Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, describing them in a joint statement as breaches of international and humanitarian law.
The talks also focused on advancing a two-state solution in line with international law and preparing for a high-level conference on Palestinian statehood in June at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.
The conference, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, aims to build global support for the two-state solution.
The meeting came amid increasing Western criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza.
On Monday, France, the UK, and Canada warned of 'concrete actions' against Israel if it does not end its renewed offensive and lift restrictions on aid.
In April, French President Emmanuel Macron said during a visit to Egypt that France planned to recognize a Palestinian state 'within months', possibly at the upcoming UN conference.
Nearly 150 countries already recognize Palestinian statehood. While this grants Palestine observer status at the UN, full membership requires Security Council approval.
The Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee was formed at an emergency summit in Gaza in November 2023.

French Cargo Giant 'CMA CGM' Resumes Services via Suez Canal by Mid-June
Taarek Refaat French shipping giant CMA CGM remains the only major global operator that has resumed its services via the Suez Canal. As of mid-June, CMA CGM plans to restart the Med Express (MEDEX) service via the Suez Canal, with the support of the French Navy. While the Asia-Europe trade line continues to grow, it is not the fastest growing, over the past 12 months, and services linked to Latin America have recorded the greatest growth, with the size of the fleet operating in Latin American services now quite similar to the capacity of all ships serving the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. The Red Sea shipping crisis and the need to take a much longer route through the Cape of Good Hope has raised the total cargo vessels there from a fifth to a quarter, according to a new study by Alfaliner. In just two years, carriers have added 2.26 million TEUs equivalent to 20 feet of additional capacity on the Asia-Europe trade corridor, bringing the total fleet on this route to 7.8 million TEUs. With 24.4% of the world's fleet now trading on this route, which is the largest shipping lane for the shipping fleet, according to Alvaliner data and two years ago, the ratio was 20.8%. When container ships change their route from the Suez Canal to cross the Cape of Good Hope, the trade route between Asia and Europe becomes longer by about 3,500 to 4,500 nautical miles (6,500 to 8,300 kilometers), depending on the ports of origin and destination, and this transfer usually adds 10 to 14 days to transit times, depending on the speed of the ship. Although US President Donald Trump last month said that more than 17 months later, the Red Sea shipping crisis, triggered by the Houthis, is coming to an end, most shipping companies questioned in recent quarterly results have insisted that it is still too early to resume Red Sea crossings. Abou El Enein: Two-State Solution Is Foundation for Sustainable Development
H-Tayea Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives and President Emeritus of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Mohamed Abou El Enein, delivered a powerful message at the South Partner Consultation Forum hosted by the American University in Cairo, emphasizing that the two-state solution is essential for peace, stability, and sustainable development across the Mediterranean region. Two-State Solution: The Cornerstone of Peace In his remarks, Abou El Enein stated unequivocally that the unresolved Palestinian issue is the main obstacle to progress in the southern Mediterranean. He emphasized that any serious effort to achieve regional development must begin with a political solution founded on justice and international legitimacy. 'The two-state solution is not a slogan—it is the only viable path to ensure peace and unlock prosperity,' he said. 'Without resolving the Palestinian cause, cycles of war will continue to hinder cooperation, scare away investment, and destabilize the region.' Egypt's Leadership and a Call for EU Action Highlighting Egypt's historic role in peacemaking and mediation, Abou El Enein praised Cairo's continuous efforts to restore calm in Gaza and support a long-term solution. He urged the European Union to translate its supportive statements into real, strategic action on the ground, starting with a clearer commitment to the two-state solution and the economic future of the South. 'While China arrives in Cairo with investment proposals and a clear plan, we need the same level of practical engagement from the EU,' he said, calling on Brussels to develop a roadmap that matches ambition with implementation. Economic Stability Requires Political Resolution Abou El Enein noted that political peace and economic prosperity go hand in hand. 'You cannot talk about energy projects, agriculture, or industry while bombs are falling in Gaza,' he said. 'Let us be honest—development is not possible in an environment dominated by conflict.' He emphasized that Egypt and its southern partners are ready for joint development, but international frameworks must prioritize justice and human dignity first. PAM's Role in Mediterranean Dialogue As President Emeritus of PAM, Abou El Enein reaffirmed the organization's full support for the new EU Pact for the Mediterranean and its active contribution to shaping the political and human rights dimensions of that framework. 'Our Charter for the Mediterranean, adopted in 2008, anticipated the same values being discussed today,' he said. He emphasized PAM's unique position as a non-governmental parliamentary platform with unmatched reach and trust across member states, committed to dialogue, peacebuilding, and concrete cooperation. Conclusion: From Words to Action In closing, Abou El Enein urged all stakeholders to move from consultation to commitment and to put the two-state solution back at the center of the Mediterranean partnership agenda. 'The time for half-measures is over. Egypt Receives First Domestically Built ASD Tugboat 'Ras El-Hekma
H-Tayea As part of Egypt's ongoing efforts to localize military industrial capabilities and strengthen naval operational readiness, the Egyptian Navy has officially taken delivery of its first Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboat, named Ras El-Hekma. The vessel is the first of three ASD tugboats being built at the Alexandria Shipyard in collaboration with the French classification society Bureau Veritas (BV). The handover ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Ashraf Atwa, Commander of the Egyptian Navy and Chairman of the Marine Industries and Services Authority, along with senior naval officials and representatives from global marine equipment suppliers. The Ras El-Hekma tugboat is of the RAstar 3200 class, known for its high-performance capabilities, including a competitive cost, enhanced maneuverability, and a powerful bollard pull capacity of 85 tons. The vessel is outfitted with state-of-the-art systems from leading international marine technology companies. This delivery marks a significant milestone in Egypt's naval industrial development. Alexandria Shipyard aims to position itself as a regional hub for the production of ASD tugboats, with ambitions to expand into global markets in the coming years.
