2024 Thanksgiving travel rush
The Thanksgiving travel rush is expected to be bigger than ever this year. AAA predicts that nearly 80 million people in the U.S. will venture at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday and next Monday – most of them by car.

Thanksgiving Day falling so late this year has altered traditional travel patterns. Meanwhile, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration says a shortage of air traffic controllers could cause flight delays.
Charlotte airport strike delays
Workers who clean airplanes, remove trash and help with wheelchairs at Charlotte's airport, one of the nation's busiest, went on strike Monday to demand higher wages.
The Service Employees International Union announced the strike in a statement early Monday, saying the workers would demand "an end to poverty wages and respect on the job during the holiday travel season." The strike was expected to last 24 hours, said union spokesperson Sean Keady.
Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services cast ballots Friday to authorize the work stoppage at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a hub for American Airlines. The two companies contract with American, one of the world's biggest carriers, to provide services such as cleaning airplane interiors, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs.
Weather forecast for NYC
Two separate storm systems carrying heavy rain are expected to impact the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel in New York City.
Periods of heavy rain are expected on Tuesday morning in the Big Apple, mainly before 11 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 100%, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, a Thanksgiving Day storm is expected to cause last-minute travel troubles that will likely last until Black Friday and the start of the weekend. The chance of precipitation on Thursday is 100%, the National Weather Service said.

German town offers free 2-week stay to lure people to relocate there

A German town trying to beef up its population is luring in new residents by offering them a two-week trial accommodation — on the house. Eisenhüttenstadt, around 60 miles from Berlin, was built in 1950. dpa/picture alliance via Getty Images Eisenhüttenstadt, around 60 miles from Berlin, is accepting applications for the program — which will run from Sept. 6 to 20 — until the beginning of July. Advertisement 'The project is aimed at anyone interested in moving to Eisenhüttenstadt—such as commuters, those interested in returning to the town, skilled workers, or self-employed individuals seeking a change of scenery,' the local council said in a statement, according to CNN Travel. The initiative in the city, which now has a population of around 24,000, is part of an 'innovative immigration project' named 'Make Plans Now,' the council continued. Local businesses will offer internships and job shadowing. dpa/picture alliance via Getty Images Advertisement Those enrolled in the program will also participate in activities designed just for them, including a tour of Eisenhüttenstadt, home to historical buildings from the Soviet era. One man was so captivated by its architecture that he had already moved there. 'We were traveling to Ratzdorf with friends and drove through Karl-Marx-Straße. And I saw these houses, this architecture that completely blew me away, and I said to my wife, 'I'm going to move here,'' he wrote on the town hall's Instagram account. Eisenhüttenstadt, which means Steel Mill Town, was built around a steel mill. Guests will get the chance to explore its factories as well. Advertisement The town also houses the largest integrated steelworks facility in eastern Germany, which employs 2,500 people and acts as a metals processing hub. Local businesses will also offer internships, job shadowing and conduct interviews with tourists, who can move there and join their labor force. Founded in 1950, Eisenhüttenstadt was the first town built from scratch under then East Germany's socialist government. At its peak, it boasted a population of 50,000. Advertisement It was originally named Stalinstadt, or Stalin Town, after the late Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, but was renamed after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the German reunification.

Airstream Just Unveiled a Frank Lloyd Wright Trailer That is So ICONIC

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Frank Lloyd Wright's legacy is hitting the road—literally. Today, Airstream and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation launched the Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer, a collection of 200, limited-edition Airstreams designed to pay homage to the legendary architect. At first thought, Airstream and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation might seem like an unlikely duo: The former company is on always on the move, while the latter's portfolio is firmly planted on the ground (and inspired by the surrounding nature). But for Bob Wheeler, Airstream's president and CEO, this collaboration was decades in the making. 'I've been dropping this idea of a Frank Lloyd Wright trailer into the thought mill for about 20 years,' Wheeler explained during a press conference at Wright landmark Taliesin West in May. 'I was lucky enough to live in a prairie-style house by an architect who was an acolyte and devotee of Wright. That really set the hook for me to be able to live in a space that was so intentional, so well thought out in every detail.' Wheeler says that Wright and Airstream founder Wallace 'Wally' Byam were contemporaries—they both grew up in a time that favored streamlined design—making this collaboration a natural partnership. Henry Hendrix, vice president and chief marketing officer of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, agrees and makes one thing very clear: This limited-edition release 'isn't a logo slap on the side of the trailer.' Hendrix says the Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer highlights two teams coming together and intentionally meshing their distinct design ethos together—and it shows.'Wright's legacy is the idea that architecture [and] intentional design can really lead to improved lives,' he explains. 'That is what we need to deliver on, and Airstream has been so open to that approach.' Wright's legacy is felt the moment you open the trailer, thanks to the famous Gordon Leaf displayed on the door frame. Wright commissioned artist and designer Eugene Masselink to make the Gordon Leaf mural pattern for former House Beautiful editor Elizabeth Gordon in 1956, and its use throughout the trailer pays homage to their bond. The foundation credits Gordon for encouraging Wright to license his distinct style for products and collaborations just like this trailer—creating a beautiful full-circle moment. 'She really understood his desire to get in the home of the average American, not just the wealthy, rich, and famous,' Hendrix tells House Beautiful. 'All of those iconic furniture pieces from that time are in people's homes because she knew that it would be well received. She understood his need to spread the word about good design.' Wheeler says Wright fans will 'immediately recognize' the architect's influence once they cross the threshold. Form and function come together in perfect harmony in the front of the trailer, which acts as a space-efficient kitchen and great room. While the cherry plywood details bring some warmth to the trailer's cool-toned, nature-inspired palette, a collapsible dining room table, chairs, and desk help make the most of a limited footprint. Speaking of the layout? The trailer embraces Wright's penchant for compression and expansion with a narrow hallway—which has a door to the bathroom and ample discreet storage—that leads to the bedroom. For sweet (and versatile) dreams, the bedroom has two twin mattresses that can come together to form a king bed with the push of a button. In fact, the labels for each of the trailer's many buttons are in the same font as the foundation's logo. The Airstream's interiors might speak to the architect's legacy, but true to Wright's aesthetic, there's also an emphasis on the trailer's surroundings. Ample windows draw the great outdoors inside, while a clever use of strategically placed lighting and slatted details play up the trailer's shadows—a technique which is a key pillar of Wright's design DNA. If you ask Wheeler, a Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer is more than a well-appointed way to get around: It's a dream come true. A marriage between two iconic American brands that celebrates the intersection of the great outdoors and indoors. 'Collaborations like this bring new ideas to the table and push our design and engineering teams beyond their comfort zone,' he says. 'The result distills the essence of these two iconoclasts into a travel trailer that is both beautiful and functional.' The Airstream Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer will be available for purchase at Airstream dealers nationwide, and prices start at $184,900. Follow on Instagram and TikTok. FAA Orders Drastic Shakeup of Major Airport Following Safety Issues

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that flights in and out of Newark Liberty International airport will be cut significantly. From Sept. 1, just 28 flights will be permitted to arrive and depart from the airport every hour on weekends. The airport has been plagued with construction, tech, and staffing issues this year. During normal operating hours, 34 arrivals and departures every hour will be the maximum operating capacity from Oct. 25, the FAA said in a statement. 'The confirmed reduced rates will maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays at the airport due to staffing and equipment challenges,' the FAA said. The decline is a sharp drop of 30 percent in carrying capacity from the normal 40 or more departures and arrivals the airport was built to handle. Newark is operating on just two runways following the closure of the third in April after the FAA deemed it unsafe, ordering a $121 million repair project. It's not the only issue however. Flights were temporarily slashed in May to ease staffing shortage issues when it was revealed that just three of the recommended 14 air traffic controllers were on duty during one particularly bad shift. Equipment malfunctions and other tech issues have also hampered the beleaguered airport, with a series of glitches hitting at the end of April and the start of May. A 90-second radar blackout and other radio meltdowns have seen five air-traffic controllers take trauma leave while the airport was averaging 34 arrival cancellations per day. Concerns have been raised by industry insiders that the airport is not safe to fly and that passengers should avoid using it. However, Transport Secretary Sean Duffy has rejected the claim. Instead, he has suggested that Congress has ignored aging infrastructure and that Newark is just a particularly bad example of what is happening 'across the country.' 'It has to be fixed,' he said. In their statement today, the FAA have said they will 'continue working with all stakeholders to ensure that the airport is a safe, efficient, and functional gateway for passengers and air carriers.'
