Brendan Allen vs. Marvin Vettori rebooked for UFC 318 in New Orleans
This summer's UFC return to New Orleans has its second fight.
Brendan Allen is set to take on former middleweight title challenger Marvin Vettori at UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) on July 19 at Smoothie King Center. MMA Junkie confirmed the matchup with a person with knowledge of the booking following an initial report from MMA Mania.
Allen and Vettori were scheduled to fight 13 months ago, but Vettori had to pull out of the fight. This time, they'll try to tee it up in "The Big Easy." The card is former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier's retirement event in front of his home-state fans in a BMF trilogy bout against ex-featherweight champ Max Holloway.
Allen (24-7 MMA, 12-4 UFC) is mired in the first slump of his career. He's working off back-to-back decision setbacks to Nassourdine Imavov and Anthony Hernandez, the latter of which came in February. Prior to that, he was on a seven-fight winning streak that included five rear-naked choke finishes and three post-fight bonuses.
Vettori (19-7-1 MMA, 9-6-1 UFC) is on a two-fight skid of his own. It's been nearly four years since he challenged then-champion Israel Adesanya for the 185-pound title at UFC 263, but dropped a decision. He was up and down after that with wins over Paulo Costa and Roman Dolidze, but losses to ex-champ Robert Whittaker and ex-title challenger Jared Cannonier.
After nearly two years away recovering from injury, Vettori returned in March and dropped a decision to Dolidze in a rematch, giving him the first skid of his pro career, as well.

USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, June 10: Kayla Harrison rockets to P4P No. 1

USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, June 10: Kayla Harrison rockets to P4P No. 1 With an utterly dominant dismantling of Julianna Peña, Kayla Harrison took home more than just a piece of hardware. Now Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) tops our women's MMA pound-for-pound list after her submission of Peña (13-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) in the second round to win the 135-pound strap in the UFC 316 co-main event. Harrison was a two-time lightweight $1 million champion in the PFL and won two Olympic gold medals in judo. Now she has a title from MMA's biggest promotion – and 20 pounds lower than the more comfortable natural weight she started her career at. In the UFC 316 headliner, Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) put on a dominant display, as well, when he submitted ex-champ Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the third round of their rematch. Dvalishvili already was king of the hill at men's bantamweight – but did O'Malley drop with the loss? Check out the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings.\

Insider Teases 'Disconnect' With Bills and Top Runner

Insider Teases 'Disconnect' With Bills and Top Runner originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Nothing has changed between the Buffalo Bills and starting running back James Cook. The league leader in rushing touchdowns last season wants a contract that pays him over $15 million a year. The Bills don't have that kind of money to give, but even if they did, they don't want to spend it on a player at a position of lesser value. Advertisement The "disconnect" that ESPN Insider Adam Schefter continues to report on, doesn't come as a surprise. This has gone on since the offseason began. 'You've got a guy who's unhappy with his contractual situation," Schefter said during his podcast. "(He) has basically disconnected himself from the organization and the city, put his house up for sale...I don't think we'll be seeing him in Buffalo anytime soon. Schefter later explained that while Cook isn't expected for mandatory minicamp next week, fans of the organization should turn their attention to what happens heading into training camp. "Does he risk the penalties that come along in the collective bargaining agreement if he doesn't show up?" Schefter questioned. Advertisement Buffalo does have a collection of running backs that they trust to carry the load if Cook refuses to show up to the start of training camp. That is still a few months away, though. The Bills front office has all the time in the world to try and come to a conclusion on their star runner - whether it be by trading him to another team, or giving him the contract he wants. The longer this holdout goes on, though, the more obvious it is that the two sides' disconnect is even greater than is actually being reported. ESPN's Adam Schefter Embarrassed In Bills Update on James Cook Holdout

ESPN's Adam Schefter Embarrassed In Bills Update on James Cook Holdout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills haven't solved their problem with with running back James Cook, who is seeking a new contract as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. Advertisement But maybe we should politely request that ESPN not sound foolish alarms regarding its progree reports. Cook wasn't at OTAs, which is, of course, voluntary ... all part of him voicing his discontent at the lack of movement on a new deal. Over the weekend, ESPN's Adam Schefter told us what would happen next. Or so he thought. 'It bears watching because you've got a guy who's unhappy with this contractual situation, who has basically disconnected himself from the organization, the city, put his house up for sale,' Schefter said. 'I don't think we'll be seeing him in Buffalo anytime soon ...'' Oops. The Bills opened up their mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Advertisement Guess who's here? Guess who's wrong? Buffalo's mandatory minicamp can serve as a test of Cook's relationship with the team. He it could be the start of something positive. Or, maybe this key offense pieces for coordinator Joe Brady simply doesn't want to get fined. But ESPN just took a chunk out of its own reputation here with embarrassing headline-grabbing "reporting'' ... as Cook is at work, however begrudgingly ... not absent and not "disconnected.''
