Brendan Allen vs. Marvin Vettori rebooked for UFC 318 in New Orleans
This summer's UFC return to New Orleans has its second fight.
Brendan Allen is set to take on former middleweight title challenger Marvin Vettori at UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) on July 19 at Smoothie King Center. MMA Junkie confirmed the matchup with a person with knowledge of the booking following an initial report from MMA Mania.
Allen and Vettori were scheduled to fight 13 months ago, but Vettori had to pull out of the fight. This time, they'll try to tee it up in "The Big Easy." The card is former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier's retirement event in front of his home-state fans in a BMF trilogy bout against ex-featherweight champ Max Holloway.
Allen (24-7 MMA, 12-4 UFC) is mired in the first slump of his career. He's working off back-to-back decision setbacks to Nassourdine Imavov and Anthony Hernandez, the latter of which came in February. Prior to that, he was on a seven-fight winning streak that included five rear-naked choke finishes and three post-fight bonuses.
Vettori (19-7-1 MMA, 9-6-1 UFC) is on a two-fight skid of his own. It's been nearly four years since he challenged then-champion Israel Adesanya for the 185-pound title at UFC 263, but dropped a decision. He was up and down after that with wins over Paulo Costa and Roman Dolidze, but losses to ex-champ Robert Whittaker and ex-title challenger Jared Cannonier.
After nearly two years away recovering from injury, Vettori returned in March and dropped a decision to Dolidze in a rematch, giving him the first skid of his pro career, as well.

Women's College World Series Game 3 draws highest audience ever for college softball game at 2.4M viewers

Friday's Game 3 of the Women's College World Series on ESPN drew the highest rating ever for a women's college softball game. Texas' 10-4 win over Texas Tech in a winner-take-all final drew an average audience of 2.4 million viewers, the network announced on Monday. The Game 3 rating continued a strong trend for the WCWS on TV. Featuring two programs pursuing their first national championship and the star appeal of Texas Tech pitcher (and $1 million NIL sensation) NiJaree Canady, Games 1 and 2 each drew 2.1 million viewers, the highest audience for the first two games of a Women's College World Series. Game 1's number was an 11% increase over the previous year, while Game 2 was up 5% from 2024. Both audiences were the fifth-largest for a women's softball broadcast across ESPN platforms. Advertisement The Longhorns won the national championship after splitting the first two games of the championship. Texas won the opener, 2-1, on a two-run single from Reese Atwood, hitting a pitch that Canady was trying to throw for an intentional walk. The Red Raiders evened the series with a 4-3 win in Game 2, capitalizing on a wild pitch and throwing error to score the key runs. In the decisive Game 3, Texas was ready for Canady in facing her for the third consecutive game. The Longhorns jumped out to a 5-0 lead with four straight singles and a three-run homer by Leighann Goode. Viewers continued to tune in even though a 10-0 Texas lead was close to invoking the NCAA mercy rule with a lead of eight or more runs after five innings. But Texas Tech scored three runs in the fifth to keep the game going. Advertisement Eventually, the game went the full seven innings with the Longhorns' Teagan Kavan pitching the entire game and winning Most Outstanding Player honors, leading Texas to its first women's softball national championship. ESPN will release viewership numbers for the entire Women's College World Series slate of broadcasts on Tuesday.

New video shows UFC 316 railing collapse that nearly hit Merab Dvalishvili on walkout

New video shows UFC 316 railing collapse that nearly hit Merab Dvalishvili on walkout New video has surfaced of the moment excited UFC 316 fans unexpectedly plunged to the floor Saturday at Prudential Center. As bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili walked out for his main event at Prudential Center, he was nearly crushed by bodies as the railing gave way to fans looking for high-fives or a peek at the Georgian star. Luckily for Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC), he avoided danger as he was swiftly escorted around the pile by security and commission staff. Team Dvalishvili member @ released a new angle of the incident Monday that more clearly shows what exactly happened. The incident marks the second time in just under two years such an incident has happened. In June 2023, a similar accident occurred during Mike Malott's UFC 289 walkout in Toronto. "It was our second one in 25 years," UFC CEO Dana White said to reporters including MMA Junkie after the event. "Everybody was hanging over the edge and it collapsed. Everybody was all right. Thank God this time it was a low one, not a high one." After he successfully defended his title, Dvalishvili was also asked about the incident. "That's funny," Dvalishvili said. "What happened was I was walking and then people tried to touch me and then, 'Oh, OK,' I jumped and tried to touch them as they pushed the barrier and they went down and they almost kicked me in the head. They almost knocked me out before I walked in. The barrier got broke or something because people pushed. Then, security put me against the wall like, 'OK, bro. I'm a fighter. Let me go. Anyway, thank God. Afterward, they told me nobody got hurt."
