Cases of attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen cellphones have been opened against three suspects who were involved in a shoot-out with police in Pinetown, KZN, last night.
Highway Mail reports that Pinetown police were patrolling the area when they were flagged down by a resident along Sander Road, who showed them the vehicle that had just been used to rob a person at gunpoint.
Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu says police tried to stop the suspected vehicle, and instead of stopping, the suspects opened fire on the police vehicle.
'The chase then ensued and the police returned fire to the suspect's vehicle. The chase continued from New Germany area to the CBD, Nazareth until Winston Churchill Drive in Pinetown.
'The driver of the suspect vehicle lost control at the curve in Winston Churchill Drive and the suspect's vehicle came to a standstill on the side of the road under the tree.'
According to Naidu, the driver managed to get out of the vehicle and fled the scene.
The police spokesperson reports that one of the suspects was shot on the left backside and was taken by ambulance to hospital under police guard.
'Two other suspects were arrested. In total three suspects were arrested as one managed to flee. Two firearms were found inside the vehicle, one had a serial number whereas the other one is a blank gun.'
Furthermore, Naidu says nine cellphones were recovered inside the suspects' vehicle.
'A number of spent cartridges were found on scene.'

Government condemns Riverlea shootout linked to illegal mining

A tragic shootout between illegal miners and the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Riverlea, Johannesburg, has left a 59-year-old man dead, prompting national condemnation and calls for stronger community collaboration in tackling criminal activity. Police reportedly exchanged gunfire with three suspects at the Zamimpilo informal settlement when the man was caught in the crossfire and killed. His body was discovered in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The South African government has extended condolences to the victim's family and pledged its support for ongoing investigations. 'This incident demonstrates the severe threat that illegal mining poses, not only to law enforcement, but to the safety and well-being of communities,' said Acting Government spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa. Mnukwa called on community members to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead work with police to address criminality. 'Community members are called to cooperate with authorities and report criminal activities taking place in their areas,' she said. Illegal mining, often associated with heavily armed syndicates, has plagued several parts of Johannesburg, including Riverlea. The violence accompanying these operations has frequently drawn attention from authorities and residents, with infrastructure damage and community safety being constant concerns. Residents in Riverlea have previously complained about the dangers posed by illegal miners, known locally as zama zamas, who operate in abandoned mines and informal settlements with minimal regard for public safety. Furthermore, law enforcement continues to intensify efforts to disrupt illegal mining networks in Johannesburg and beyond. The government has praised these efforts and reaffirmed its stance on maintaining order. 'Government commends the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to clamp down on illegal mining operations, which continue to pose serious threats to public safety and infrastructure,' Mnukwa added. South Africans detained in Zimbabwe for illegal entry face deportation

Zimbabwean authorities have detained several South African nationals in Harare Remand Prison for breaching immigration laws and are holding them pending deportation. While many South Africans are pending deportation, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) says three South African men face trial in Zimbabwe on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Meanwhile, the ZHRC reports that a Zimbabwean court has convicted a South African woman of dealing in dangerous drugs and sentenced her to 10 years in jail. ZHRC Chairperson Jessie Majome told IOL that officials have confirmed six men at Harare Remand Prison as South African nationals. She said they are now ready for deportation following verification by South Africa's High Commission. However, she said the South African diplomatic mission told Zimbabwean authorities that the elderly seventh man is not a South African citizen. As a result, officials will not deport him. Majome said she visited the prison and found 66 foreign nationals held in the men's section. 'It is an issue of concern to the Commission because it involves a special category of people who should not be in prison,' she said. She stressed that authorities should not treat people arrested for irregular immigration like suspects awaiting trial, even though the offence is illegal.
