CU launches visa support services for foreign nationals

Korea Herald01-05-2025

Convenience store chain CU announced on Thursday that it launched visa support services tailored to foreign residents in Korea, aiming to assist with application processes and enhance accessibility.
Offered in partnership with K-Visa, a the country's leading visa service provider, the new service will cover a wide range of needs including marriage, employment, investment, immigration and permanent residency.
By scanning a QR code displayed at CU stores and filling out a brief form, customers are instantly connected with a licensed administrative professional who can assist with their specific visa requirements.
Support is offered in four languages — English, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese — and users can monitor the progress of their applications in real time, from submission through review to final approval.
The service is priced competitively, with fees approximately 50 percent lower than the industry average. Visa extension services, for example, are available starting at just 20,000 won ($14), reportedly the lowest rate in Korea.
Initially, CU will roll out the service at around 50 stores located in areas with large foreign populations, including Daerim, Hongdae, Itaewon and Dongdaemun in Seoul. Based on customer feedback, the company plans to expand the offering to 1,000 stores by the end of the year.
In addition, CU is preparing to introduce a startup package for foreign entrepreneurs as well as a recruitment support program for foreign job seekers.
'CU is the first in the industry to offer visa agency services, making it easier for foreign residents to manage visa-related tasks at their nearest convenience store,' said Yoo Sung-hwan, head BGF Retail's service platform team. 'We will continue to develop innovative products and services that appeal to both local and international customers.'

K-beauty's new glow-up isn't in stores. It's on stock market

APR, which went public in February last year, has overtaken LG H&H to become Korea's No. 2 cosmetics stock South Korea's beauty scene is making headlines again this month, but this time among stock investors and not beauty bloggers. In a rare burst of momentum for a market long stuck in a boxed-in trading range, Korea's main bourse Kospi finally broke past the long-awaited 3,000 mark, closing at 3,021.84 on June 20. The first such finish since December 2021 came as the cosmetics sector, one of the market's top performers, helped propel the index higher. While sharp gainers included K-beauty names like Aekyung Industrial and TonyMoly, it was a new crop of next-generation brands that stood out, some of which notched new 52-week highs during intraday trading. Cosmax, a leading Korean original design manufacturer, hit a new high of 287,000 won ($212) on Wednesday, while Silicon2, a global K-beauty wholesaler, reached its peak at 63,350 won on June 11. Another standout was d'Alba Global, a recent entrant that debuted on May 22 at 66,300 won and surged to an all-time high of 190,200 won on Tuesday. Beauty-tech firm APR has also seen a meteoric rise, growing from a 1.9 trillion won market cap at its initial public offering just 16 months ago to nearly 5.37 trillion won as of Monday. It edged past LG Household & Health Care, at 5.33 trillion won, to claim the second spot in Korea's cosmetics sector. Amorepacific still holds reigns with a market cap of 8.3 trillion won. While LG H&H still leads in earnings, investors are betting on APR's breakneck growth. In the first quarter, it posted 266 billion won in revenue and 54.6 billion won in operating profit, up 79 and 97 percent from a year earlier. Much of the momentum is spurred by upbeat consumer sentiment both at home and abroad from a renewed K-beauty craze overseas to flickers of optimism among Chinese shoppers. 'Expectations are building on signs of recovery in China's cosmetics market, fueled by strong shopping festival sales and the anticipated boost from nationwide consumption vouchers,' said a financial analyst at Shinhan Securities. According to a researcher surnamed Bae at Mirae Asset Securities, global consumers are gravitating toward value-driven, trend-sensitive brands, with smaller K-beauty firms excelling in agile, social media-driven marketing strategies. Macro winds are also blowing in favor of rising business sentiment, propped up by a planned 30-trillion-won government stimulus package. Among them is 13.2 trillion won in direct cash handouts to households, expected to lift domestic consumption stocks across sectors, from food and fashion to skincare. Not all that glitters is gold, however, as some analysts warn that certain small-cap stocks are riding speculative waves. One industry insider noted that it remains to be seen whether they can sustain their performance, with 'overseas growth and long-term channel expansion' serving as key barometers. Meanwhile, legacy giants like Amorepacific and LG Household & Health Care have lagged behind newer market players, likely weighed down by persistent concerns over China's economic slowdown. This month, as of Tuesday, Amorepacific rose 6.28 percent and LG H&H 4.75 percent, both underperforming the Kospi's average gain of 11.74 percent. Still, recent earnings point to some recovery in China and beyond. In the January–March period, Amorepacific Holdings's overseas sales surged 40.5 percent on-year to 473 billion won, while operating profit more than doubled to 69.6 billion won. LG H&H reported domestic sales of 1.16 trillion won, down 4.3 percent, while overseas sales rose 4.2 percent to 536 billion won.

N. Korea targets Russian tourists for new beach resort: Seoul

No sign of restarting Chinese group tours to N. Korea since 2020, says Unification Ministry North Korea is expected to court Russian tourists following the official completion of its Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone, which is set to open first to domestic travelers in July, South Korea's Unification Ministry said Thursday. The ministry also noted that construction — which had been suspended for an extended period — resumed last year, possibly with material support from Russia and the expectation of attracting Russian tourists. North Korean state media reported Thursday on the completion ceremony of the Wonsan-Kalma beach resort, held Tuesday and attended by leader Kim Jong-un, his wife Ri Sol-ju, their daughter, widely believed to be Kim Ju-ae, and his sister Kim Yo-jong. Ri made her first public appearance since attending a New Year's Day music concert in 2024. The resort is set to open to domestic visitors on July 1, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said. KCNA reported, 'The tourist zone equipped with hotels and inns capable of accommodating around 20,000 people, allowing domestic and international visitors to choose accommodations that suit their preferences' in a Korean language report. Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexandr Matsegora and his embassy members were invited as special guests, according to the state media report. 'Operations are expected to gradually expand to include Russian tourists, beginning with domestic tourism on July 1,' a Unification Ministry official said on condition of anonymity during a closed-door briefing. 'The fact that the Russian ambassador was invited and highlighted (in the state media report) also appears to have been intended with Russian tourists in mind.' The official further explained, 'North Korea has regarded tourism as very important while recognizing it as a key means of earning foreign currency.' 'Tourism itself is not a violation of sanctions. However, tourism operations that involve bulk cash transfers or are conducted in the form of cooperative projects or joint ventures with North Korea could constitute a violation of sanctions,' the official said. 'On the other hand, individual tourists paying their own expenses on a cost-reimbursement basis would not be considered a sanctions violation.' UN Security Council Resolution 2270 prohibits the transfer of bulk cash to North Korea, and Resolution 2375 bans all UN member states from creating any new joint ventures with North Korean entities or individuals. North Korea's decision to resume yearslong construction of the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone in 2024 could be related to a closer alignment with Russia during the country's grinding war against Ukraine. 'Since North Korea's involvement in the Ukraine war, it is believed that the country has received various forms of material support from Russia — support that may have contributed economically to the completion of the Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone,' the unnamed official said. 'Additionally, there is a possibility that North Korea will actively seek to attract Russian tourists, which could explain the renewed push to promote the project.' North Korea initially designated the area along the coast connecting Wonsan and Mount Kumgang a tourist zone in 2014. KCNA previously reported that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Wonsan region took place in May 2015, on Kalma Street in Wonsan city. North Korea originally set a goal of completing the tourist zone by April 15, 2019, to mark the birth anniversary of the country's late founder, Kim Il-sung. However, the project was repeatedly delayed due to difficulties in securing construction materials under international sanctions. Construction had been halted following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and remained suspended until 2024. The official, however, underscored that Seoul needs to watch how much tourism in the Wonsan-Kalma coastal zone can actually be realized 'due to various limitations in transportation infrastructure.' Based on the number of flights and the size of aircraft operating between Pyongyang and Vladivostok, the maximum number of people who could travel via Pyongyang to the Wonsan-Kalma coastal zone in a single day would be around 170, according to the official. The official also explained there has been no progress in resuming Chinese group tours, which have been suspended since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in January 2020. 'We are also monitoring the potential resumption of large-scale Chinese group tours to North Korea, but no concrete signs have emerged yet.'

Kolmar Korea Aims to Capture Global Skincare Market with "Uniquely Korean" Cleansers and Facial Masks

SEOUL, South Korea, June 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Kolmar Korea, a leading global cosmetics ODM (Original Development Manufacturer), is ramping up its international skincare strategy with K-beauty products that spotlight "Uniquely Korean" natural ingredients. As the global trend of "ingredient-led beauty"—which prioritizes natural components and proven efficacy—continues to grow, Kolmar is winning over consumers worldwide with its innovative cleansers and facial masks. The global market for cleansers and facial masks has recently seen rapid growth, fueled in part by short-form video platforms like TikTok. Notably, the "Korean skincare routine" has become a major beauty keyword, prompting consumer interest to expand beyond sun care into cleansing and masking products. In response, Kolmar Korea is accelerating its global push by collaborating with brand partners to develop skincare products featuring natural Korean ingredients. A standout example is the Mung Bean pH-Balanced Cleansing Foam, co-developed with skincare brand Beplain. This product reimagines mung beans—used in Korea as a natural cleanser for over 1,000 years—with a low-irritation formula and powerful cleansing effects. With more than 10 million units sold, it has been well-received in markets including the U.S., France, China, and Vietnam, gaining international traction through organic social media buzz. Kolmar is also advancing the development of natural mud-based facial masks. The Relief Mud Mask, created in partnership with natural mud cosmetics brand BRMUD, features over 30% Boryeong mud—sourced from one of the world's five largest tidal flats in Korea. It utilizes ultra-fine powder particles—1/40th the size of wheat flour—to gently yet effectively absorb impurities. Nicknamed the " Cardi B Mud Mask" after the American singer praised it on TikTok, the product is now sold in 11 countries, including at Costco stores in the U.S. Driving these innovations is Kolmar Korea's industry-leading R&D capability. More than 30% of the company's workforce are researchers, and roughly 6% of annual sales are invested in R&D. The company's competitive edge is rooted in expertise built from collaborations with approximately 4,300 global clients. Kolmar continues to pioneer the discovery of unique Korean cosmetic ingredients. Recently, it scientifically validated the anti-aging effects of Spiraea Salicifolia, publishing the findings in an international SCI-level journal, and secured the ingredient's listing in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary (ICID). Last year, the company identified the hair-loss prevention benefits of Sophora flavescens extract, a legume, and presented the research at an international academic conference, gaining widespread attention. Kolmar is also commercializing the scents of native Korean plants such as the Rose of Sharon and lotus to promote the sensory value of traditional Korean botanicals. A Kolmar Korea spokesperson stated, "As global interest in K-beauty expands beyond sun care into holistic skincare, we're enhancing our market competitiveness by combining advanced technology with Korea's natural treasures. Through continuous R&D investment and innovation, we aim to lead the global skincare routine with uniquely Korean ingredients."
