Rick Pitino had a 7-word explanation for benching RJ Luis in St. John's loss to Arkansas
The only thing more surprising than No. 2 seed St. John's falling to No. 10 seed Arkansas in the NCAA men's tournament Round of 32 on Saturday is who wasn't on the court for the Red Storm during the final, crucial minutes.

As the Johnnies' season came to an abrupt end in the 75-66 loss, reigning Big East Player of the Year R.J. Luis Jr. was seemingly glued to the Red Storm's bench. After averaging 18.5 points and 7.2 rebounds this season, the junior went ice cold from the floor early against Arkansas and wasn't given a chance to find his game down the stretch.
When asked why he sat his best player all year, St. John's head coach Rick Pitino gave a very succinct — and tense — answer:
It's true Luis had one of his worst games of the season. He shot 3-for-17 from the field with nine points and seven rebounds. It was only the second time all season Luis scored fewer than 10 points and the first time since late December.
Still, the one area where he was helping the Johnnies on Saturday was from the free throw line (3-for-4). With the Red Storm trailing late and attempting to draw fouls, he seemingly could've helped. Instead, Pitino kept him on the bench. Obviously, the coach knows his players better than anyone else, but it's a decision the program will likely second-guess all offseason.
For his part, Luis owned up to his performance in the locker room after the loss.
Pitino clearly didn't want to speak ill of a star player who everyone watching knew was struggling out there. That's probably for the best, even if it won't stop basketball fans from wondering what Luis could've gone if given another chance.

What happened to Rosenblatt Stadium? What to know about former College World Series venue

Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, the home of the College World Series, has been open since 2011, when it replaced Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium. One of Arkansas, LSU, Oregon State, Coastal Carolina, UCLA, Arizona, Murray State or Louisville, the eight teams to qualify for the CWS in 2025, will come away with a national championship at Charles Schwab Field, which cost $131 million to build. NCAA baseball tournament winners, losers College World Series full of surprises While Charles Schwab Field gave the CWS a much-needed facelift and allowed for more fans to attend the event, the aura of Rosenblatt Stadium still lives on. But what happened to it? Here's everything you need to know about Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium: What happened to Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium? Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, the host for the College World Series for 61 years, was demolished beginning in 2012 after hosting its last CWS in 2010. Rosenblatt Stadium's days were numbered after the City of Omaha promised the NCAA a new stadium in 2008 in order to keep the CWS in Omaha for the next 25 years. The area that held Rosenblatt Stadium was then sold to the nearby zoo, which demolished the venue in order to expand the zoo and add parking. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, in a classy move, built an ode to Rosenblatt Stadium by recreating a small version of the field on the confines of its park. It's called the "Infield at the Zoo," and includes some original pieces from the old stadium. The kid-friendly infield is located in the same area as the original field, and is commonly visited by teams that reach the College World Series. In May 2007, an organization named "Save Rosenblatt" came into being amid ongoing talks of building a new CWS venue. The organization even ran local commercials that called for renovations to the stadium, with Kevin Costner appearing in the advertisement. What to know about Rosenblatt Stadium Rosenblatt Stadium opened in 1948 and was the home of the College World Series from 1950-2010. The historic venue also hosted the Omaha Royals (now Omaha Storm Chasers), the Kansas City Royals' Triple-A affiliate, until 2010. Rosenblatt Stadium was the largest minor-league stadium in MiLB until its demolition. The famed "Road to Omaha" sculpture that graces the entrance at Charles Schwab Field, the new home of the College World Series, was originally dedicated at Rosenblatt Stadium, but was moved once the CWS moved. The stadium was named after former mayor Johnny Rosenblatt, who was in office from 1954-61. An avid baseball fan, Rosenblatt was a semi-pro baseball player and played in games against the likes of Satchel Paige and Babe Ruth, and he played a key role in bringing the CWS to Omaha. The stadium was originally named Omaha Municipal Stadium but was renamed to honor Rosenblatt in 1964.

College World Series storylines: Eight intriguing plot points to follow in Omaha

College World Series storylines: Eight intriguing plot points to follow in Omaha Show Caption Hide Caption 4 MLB prospects to watch during the 2025 Men's College World Series 4 MLB prospects The Montgomery Advertiser's Adam Cole and The Southwest Times Record's Jackson Fuller are watching during the 2025 Men's College World Series OMAHA, Neb. ― Eight teams remain in college baseball as Arizona, Arkansas, Coastal Carolina, Louisville, LSU, Murray State, Oregon State and UCLA vie for the national title at the 2025 College World Series at Charles Schwab Field beginning June 13. Already, this group is making history. It's the first time since 1957 that there will be no repeat trips to Omaha, as none of the eight teams that made it in 2024 are back this season. In fact, two teams that went to the CWS a year ago didn't even qualify for the postseason in 2025. Both Mitch Canham of Oregon State and Chip Hale of Arizona previously won national titles with the schools they currently coach. Both are vying to become the third person to ever win national titles as both a player and coach and the second to ever do both with the same school. Here's one storyline for each team you may not know: Arizona: Chip Hale looking to add to his accolades Hale has a lot of experience with World Series of all sorts. He won a title as a player with the Wildcats in 1986 and he was on the coaching staff of the 2019 Washington Nationals team that won the World Series. Though he never won an MLB World Series as a player, he was in Triple-A with the Minnesota Twins when they won it all in 1991. By adding on a College World Series title as a coach, Hale could become uniquely decorated across levels of baseball. CWS FIELD: Ranking the eight teams fighting for title in Omaha DIVERSE FIELD: College World Series highlights best of college sports Arkansas: Why history favors the Razorbacks College baseball has seen a funny trend over the past half-decade: the last five College World Series championships have been won by five different SEC teams. Three of those teams (Mississippi State in 2021, Mississippi in 2022 and Tennessee in 2024) won their school's first-ever baseball titles. If history holds, that leaves Arkansas as the last team standing. The Razorbacks are one of two SEC teams in Omaha, and the other is LSU, which just won two years ago. Arkansas is currently fourth in the country in most CWS appearances without a title, and if the Razorbacks' 12th attempt in 2025 proves fruitless, they will move into a tie for second. Coastal Carolina: Kevin Schnall in rare territory Kevin Schnall is in his first year as Coastal Carolina's head coach after the retirement of longtime coach Gary Gilmore. A first-year head coach has never won the national title; the closest was LSU's Jay Johnson, who won in his second season in 2023. But Johnson had been a head coach before and had previously led Arizona to Omaha. Schnall had never been a head coach at any level before taking over the Chanticleers. Louisville: Tague Davis chasing history Louisville first baseman Tague Davis has hit 18 home runs this season, already well surpassing the program's freshman home run record of 15. But Davis could go one step further. He's currently third nationwide in freshman home runs, but he's just two behind the leader, Loyola Marymount's Nate Savoie. Davis is the only freshman with double-digit home runs still playing, and he can tie Savoie's mark with two homers or secure the national lead with three. LSU: National champions return Two players recorded at least 100 plate appearances for both the 2023 LSU team that won the national title and the 2025 team: Jared Jones and Josh Pearson. Jones started 47 games in 2023 but played only a minor role in Omaha, recording three at-bats. Pearson started all eight of LSU's games in Omaha and hit .115. but he did contribute one home run and drew eight walks. The pitching staff is entirely new, though. Of the 17 pitchers who recorded an inning for the 2023 Tigers, only Chase Shores has seen any action in 2025. Murray State: The first-time participant Murray State, which won both the Oxford Regional and the Durham Super Regional as the No. 4 seed, is making its first-ever appearance in Omaha. Just four other teams have made their first-ever trip to the College World Series in the last decade: UC Santa Barbara and Coastal Carolina in 2016, Washington in 2018 and Kentucky in 2024. It's worth noting that not only are the Chanticleers making their second-ever Omaha appearance along with Murray State in 2025, but they won the national title during their first appearance in 2016. Oregon State: An independent season With Pac-12 baseball dormant, Oregon State became an independent for the 2025 season. It's rarely done, but the last team to compete as an independent had a lot of success. Miami won four national titles and was runner-up two other times as an independent. No other high-level college baseball team has been with out a conference since the Hurricanes joined the ACC in 2004. OMAHA PREVIEW: Biggest strength, weakness of every CWS team UCLA: Back after a break Among the teams in Omaha that have been there before, UCLA is the one that's waited the longest to get back. The Bruins won a national title in 2013, but they haven't made the trip since. That includes losing two different times as the No. 1 overall seed, in 2015 and 2019. UCLA has had a tough time post-COVID, failing to qualify for a regional in both 2023 and 2024. But the Bruins are finally back, and they become the first Big Ten team to go to Omaha since the Michigan team that eliminated them in 2019. Everything LSU's Casan Evans Said Following the Tigers' Win Over Little Rock

Everything LSU's Casan Evans Said Following the Tigers' Win Over Little Rock originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After Zac Cowan faced trouble early on, Casan Evans came into the game as a relief pitcher and delivered six outstanding innings, enabling LSU to rally and overcome Arkansas Little Rock. Advertisement After the heroic performance, Casan met with the media and gave his thoughts on the win. 'Yeah, I mean, hands down one of the best performances I've had of this year and of my career. So I couldn't be more thankful for Coach Johnson trusting me in the situation when we were down a couple runs. He threw me in with runners on. I was just going to go right at them and let them get themselves out. And having these two [Luis Hernandez and Ethan Frey] behind me, especially Luis at the plate, being able to calm me down in certain situations, I mean, it was you have our fan base, and there's no better fan base in the country. Casan was also asked about he plays fast and doesn't take a lot of time between pitches. 'I think tempo is the best thing you can have when you're on the mound. It's one of the big factors that a lot of pitchers don't have. When you don't have tempo, you won't be able to get dudes out. I think at one point in the game I got a little too fast, Kade Anderson came up to me said you threw four pitches in 20 seconds. That was a little too fast, but I was able to go out there and get within myself and compete,' said Evans. It is clear that if the LSU Tigers reach the College World Series, Casan Evans is likely to play a crucial role in that success.
