China military says it monitored US warship in Taiwan Strait
BEIJING: China's military said on Thursday (Apr 24) that it had dispatched naval and air forces to monitor and warn a United States guided missile destroyer that sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait.
The US Navy, occasionally accompanied by ships from allied countries, transits the strait about once a month. China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, says the strategic waterway belongs to it.
China held its latest round of war games around Taiwan earlier this month, drawing condemnation from Taipei and concern from the US and its allies.
The Eastern Theatre Command of China's People's Liberation Army named the ship as the guided-missile destroyer USS William P Lawrence, and said it passed through the strait on Wednesday in an act of "public hyping".
"Relevant remarks by the United States have inverted right and wrong, distorted legal principles, confused the public and misled international perception," the command said in a statement, without specifying which comments it was referring to.
"We are telling the United States to stop their distortions and hyping and to work together to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

Myanmar jet crash killed four civilians: local official
YANGON - A Myanmar junta jet that crashed in a war zone this week killed four people as it smashed into a village where civilians were sheltering from fighting, a local official said on June 13. Myanmar has been consumed by civil war since the military ousted a democratic government in 2021. More than three million people are currently displaced, according to United Nations figures. Anti-coup guerillas claimed they downed the jet on June 10 after four days of intense combat in central Sagaing region, while Myanmar's junta said it crashed because of 'sudden engine failure'. Mr Zaw Htet, a local administrator from the rebel-held area, said there were four fatalities as the jet destroyed five buildings on impact in the village of Sa Par Sayt. 'They were killed in their houses. Three of them were IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) who came to stay at the village,' said Mr Zaw Htet. Analysis of social media images of the crash site by the Britain-based Centre for Information Resilience's Myanmar Witness project identified the jet as a Chinese-manufactured single-seat Chengdu F-7. Myanmar's military has suffered stinging territorial losses in recent months, but analysts say its air force backed by China and Russia has been key to fending off its myriad opponents. The military and some of its adversaries have pledged a truce this month as the country continues to recover from March's devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake which killed nearly 3,800 people. But the People's Liberation Army – a communist group which took up arms after the coup – said it downed the jet 130km west of Mandalay city, the area worst-hit by the tremor. The junta information team said the jet had been on a training flight when it was stricken by a technical malfunction. WorldPride parade-goers march through Washington in defiance of Trump, World News
WASHINGTON -LGBTQ+ people and supporters from around the world marched through the streets of Washington on Saturday (June 7) with a mixture of joyful celebration and a show of defiance in the face of President Donald Trump's rollback of queer rights. The parade route passed within one block of the White House grounds in one of the final main events of the weeks-long WorldPride celebration, as revelers waved rainbow flags, including one stretching several blocks long, and danced to pulsating beats. On Sunday a more political event, dubbed a rally and march, will convene at the Lincoln Memorial, a revered space in the US civil rights movement as the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963. Since returning to office in January, Trump has issued executive orders limiting transgender rights, banning transgender people from serving in the armed forces, and rescinding anti-discrimination policies for LGBTQ+ people as part of a campaign to repeal diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Thousands lined the parade route, marched or gathered for a festival on Pennsylvania Avenue with the US Capitol in the background. Neither parade organizers nor police in the District of Columbia estimated the size of the crowd. Parade-goers pledged to preserve remaining rights and fight the Republican president's agenda. Pentagon chief orders renaming of ship named for gay icon: Reports
WASHINGTON - Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the renaming of a US Navy ship named after a gay icon, the assassinated former San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, a military affairs website reported June 3. said it had reviewed a memo from the Office of the Secretary of the Navy that said the move was in line with Mr Hegseth's purported goal of 're-establishing a warrior culture' in the US armed forces. quoted an unidentified defence official as saying that Navy Secretary John Phelan had been ordered by Mr Hegseth to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, and the timing of the upcoming announcement - during LGBTQ WorldPride month – was intentional. 'Harvey Milk proudly served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and was a formidable force for change – not just in California, but in our country,' the California congresswoman said in a statement. 'This spiteful move... is a surrender of a fundamental American value: to honour the legacy of those who worked to build a better country.' Mr Milk served as a US Navy diver at a time when there was a ban on homosexuality in the military. One of the first openly gay politicians in America, Mr Milk was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, where he was instrumental in passing laws banning discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Months later, in 1978, Mr Milk was shot dead along with mayor George Moscone, by a disgruntled former city supervisor. Mr Milk's murder helped cement his reputation as a civil rights icon, and he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The USNS Harvey Milk, a 227m refuelling vessel, was christened at a ceremony in 2021 attended by then-secretary of the navy Carlos Del Toro. Since taking office, President Donald Trump has moved to ban transgender troops from the military and to dismantle diversity programs, claiming they 'undermine leadership, merit, and unit cohesion, thereby eroding lethality and force readiness'.
