Special Olympics heroes honoured in Mansion House after World Winter Games success
Dublin Lord Mayor Emma Blain hosted a ceremony honouring the 14 athletes who competed in the Turin Games in floorball and alpine skiing. Team Ireland secured a total of 11 medals at the Games, comprising five gold, three silver, and three bronze.
Máire Connolly took one gold, while Lucy Best and Caolan McConville won two golds each, all for skiing.
Donal Brennan and Clive Healy took silvery medals for skiing, while Clive Healy, Máire Connolly and Lucy Best also won bronze medals. Ireland's men's floorball team also won bronze.
Matt English, Special Olympics CEO, said: 'I was really excited to see the whole team again this evening. While it was great to see the team perform so well, it's nice a month later to reflect on what they achieved. Both the athletes and the coaches and the whole management team.'
'For our athletes, unlike professional athletes that may have a 10- or 15-year career where there is a limelight on an ongoing basis, for some of these athletes this might be the only time they will compete on a world stage like this. It is a huge honour for them.'
Mr English also hailed the importance of the charity's volunteers, who give up their time to support the 6,200 Special Olympics athletes across the country.
'It's really inspirational. I have met so many volunteers over the years, I have heard consistently that they would have said they would try volunteering for three months and then many are still involved 20 or 30 years later. What they invariably find is they get more back themselves for being involved than they put in,' Mr English said.
For athletes who are considering getting involved at the grassroots level, there is an abundance of choices and benefits, he said.
'They experience inclusion and a feeling of community when they join. We now offer 15 different sports, meaning we have athletes participating in the Young Athlete programme learning the ABCs of support, ' Mr English added.
"We also have older athletes in their 70s, and a few in their 80s, who are involved in bowling and bocce or even volunteering themselves.

"Then we have the more competitive athletes too. So depending on what your level is we make sure there is something for everyone.'
The charity's all-Ireland collection day will take place on Friday May 2 with Special Olympics Ireland urging the public to donate and give as little as €2, which can make all the difference for the organisation.
Mr English said: 'It is a critical day for us. As a charitable organisation, we receive state funding along with donations from our valued sponsors and corporate partners, but it is also essential we raise money from the general public.'
The Lord Mayor said she was 'honoured' to host the event.
Ms Blain said: 'I am super proud on behalf of the citizens of Dublin to recognise the athletes' achievements. And not just the athletes but the volunteers that take part and their families and friends. We all know the effort it takes to be an athlete but you can't do that without support. The Special Olympics only functions with the amazing efforts of the volunteers that are involved.'

Rory McIlroy's former coach 'scolds' Brooks Koepka at US Open
Brooks Koepka has revealed how he received a scolding from Rory McIlroy's former coach, Pete Cowen, ahead of this week's US Open. Koepka was speaking to the media after shooting an impressive two-under-par 68 on the opening day of the US Open in a welcome return to form. The five-time major winner has been a long-time client of renowned coach Cowen and said he received a dressing down from the English golf guru ahead of the tournament. 'Pete got into me on Monday. I just sat there, and he scolded me pretty well. 'I'll put it this way, (Justin Thomas) thought he had to come check on me in the bunker. We were in there for about 45 minutes, and he was on the other side of the green. 'I saw him Monday night and he was like 'I was worried; your head was down'. "I wasn't happy with it but it was something I think you need to hear or I needed to hear at the right time. 'It's not the first time he's done it. He's not afraid to. I don't like having 'yes' people around me. I just want somebody to tell me the truth, tell me what's going on, what they see. 'If I start swaying from being Brooks Koepka, then I want someone to call me out on it and he did a helluva job on it.' Cowen has coached a number of former major winners and was recruited by Rory McIlroy back in 2021. The duo worked together for about eight months while Covid made travel difficult for long time coach Michael Bannon and amicably parted ways after the easing of restrictions. McIlroy has worked with childhood coach Bannon for his entire career, but has also worked with renowned coaches such as Cowen and Butch Harmon at times in the past.

Evan Ferguson given reality check after Newcastle and Everton transfer links
Evan Ferguson has been told he doesn't need to leave the Premier League to get his career back on track. The former Bohemians forward burst onto the scene at Brighton in 2022, attracting interest from European heavyweights and even being valued at £100million. However, Ferguson's career has stalled over the last couple of years. He endured a barren 33-game streak without a goal at Brighton, which he only snapped last October. Then, after struggling for game time with the Seagulls, he had a fruitless loan spell at West Ham, which yielded no goals in eight appearances. With Brighton willing to cash in on the Ireland international, Newcastle, Everton and Bournemouth have been credited with an interest, while Celtic have also been mentioned as a potential destination. Ex-Ireland defender Richard Dunne, who began his career in English football at Everton, has faith that Ferguson can get his career back on track. Asked if the youngster should consider leaving the Premier League, Dunne, 45, told William Hill: 'Sometimes in football, you just have moves that don't work out or moments that don't work out. 'I remember when I started off at Everton, I played 10 or 11 games, thought I had done really well, came back the next season and never played a game. 'You have ups and downs throughout your career and it's just about how you react. I'm sure Evan will be desperate to get playing next year and if that means moving up the Premier League or down the Premier League, whatever it may be, I'm sure he'll do it.' Dunne believes Ferguson may just need one pre-season to discover the form that made him such a hot property. The former Manchester City and Aston Villa centre-back added: 'He's also a player who can turn back up in pre-season. 'He can score 10 goals in pre-season and become a number nine because he's a very, very good footballer. He just needs a run of games, a bit of confidence and a couple of goals. 'There'll be a hundred options for Evan in the summer and it's just sort of making sure he gets the one which is focused on him playing week in, week out.' Meanwhile, former Ireland and Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given believes Ferguson needs to move on for the good of both his club and international career. Per the Daily Record, Given said: 'Maybe because he burst onto the scene that everyone's been expecting so much so soon. But again, with young players, you need to have a bit of time. 'I just feel he's ready now to burst onto the scene for a full season with somebody. For us, with Ireland, it would be great too. "I don't know if the finances would be to buy him, but if you said for a loan for the season, it would be perfect. But I'm not the financial power at Celtic or Newcastle, so I don't know.'
