
The foreign language that is now the most popular among GCSE students
Spanish has surpassed French as the most popular foreign language at GCSE level, new figures indicate.
Provisional data for England reveals a 1.9 per cent decrease in French GCSE entries this summer, falling from 130,650 last year to 128,155 this year. German GCSE entries have also declined by 7.6 per cent, from 35,110 to 32,430.
Conversely, Spanish GCSE entries have risen by 1.6 per cent, from 129,935 in the summer of 2024 to 131,985 this summer, according to Ofqual data.
A school leaders' union suggests that the increasing popularity of Spanish may be attributed to students' familiarity with the language due to the popularity of Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands as holiday destinations.
At the A-level, French and German entries have also decreased by 8.3 per cent and 6.8 per cent, respectively, while Spanish A-level entries have increased by 1.4 per cent.
Overall, the total number of entries for this summer's GCSE and A-level exams has decreased, according to the data released on Thursday.
GCSE provisional entries have fallen by 0.6 per cent from 5,811,595 in summer 2024 to 5,777,020 this summer.
Meanwhile, A-level entries have decreased by 0.4 per cent from 825,355 last summer to 821,875 this summer.
The decrease for GCSE entries this summer is because of a drop in entries for subjects in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) measure as well as non-EBacc subjects, England's exams regulator Ofqual said.
The EBacc is a performance measure which aims to ensure pupils take English, maths, science, a humanities subject and a language at GCSE.
GCSE entries for computing – an EBacc subject – have decreased by 4.7 per cent on last year, while entries for history are down by 5.9 per cent on last summer.
In March, the interim report of the independent curriculum and assessment review said it will consider whether the EBacc remains 'effective'.
The review suggested that the EBacc may 'constrain the choice of students' in school, and it could limit their access to vocational and arts subjects.
The provisional figures also show GCSE entries for art and design subjects are down by 1.7 per cent on last year, and GCSE entries for drama are down 1.5 per cent.
Pepe Di'Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), said: 'The rising popularity of Spanish as a choice for GCSE probably reflects the fact that many young people may be more familiar with the Spanish language, because of the popularity of Spain, the Balearics and Canary Islands as holiday destinations, than they are with French and German.
'That then tends to be reinforced by what friends and siblings are studying.
'The growing popularity of Spanish is really good news as there has been a long-term decline in modern foreign languages, but we do need to do more at a national level to boost language learning more generally.'
The top 10 most popular GCSEs based on entries is unchanged from last year, with combined science in first place follow by maths, English language, English literature, history, geography, religious studies, art & design, biology and chemistry.
Outside the top 10, business studies has moved up from 14th place in 2024 to 13th this year, while PE has risen from 17th to 16th.
French has dropped two places from 12th to 14th, with Spanish moving up from 13th to 12th.
Vicky Gough, schools adviser at the British Council, said: 'Spanish has grown in importance for the UK, both as a key global business language and through its popularity in tourism.
'It is now the second most widely spoken first language in the world.
'At the same time, we've seen a steady, if uneven, decline in the uptake of French and German, with German falling significantly year on year.
'Many pupils perceive Spanish as easier to learn and recognise its global reach and usefulness.
'While the rise of Spanish is encouraging, the decline in French and German is a real concern.
'These languages are spoken in the UK's two largest non-English-speaking trading partners and continue to be highly valued by employers.'
Sarah Hannafin, head of policy at school leaders' union NAHT, said: 'It is hard to know for sure why entries have dropped in certain subjects – there is always some variability year on year.
'But one possibility is that with recruitment challenges really biting in schools, some simply don't have the teachers they need to offer courses in certain subjects.
'Teacher recruitment targets were missed in computing, chemistry, physics and modern foreign languages in the last couple of years, and these are among the subjects which experienced a fall in entries.
'This underlines the need for the Government to address head on the fundamental causes of the recruitment and retention crisis gripping schools, which ultimately affects students as well as increasingly stretched leaders and teachers.'

Museums put trigger warning on manual about trigger warnings
A group of museums have put a trigger warning on a new training manual about trigger warnings. The 'trigger toolkit' provides advice on how to prevent heritage sector workers becoming traumatised in training sessions. The manual suggests issuing content warnings to alert staff to any upsetting material, ranging from 'Islamphobia' to 'transphobia' and 'colonialism'. But the document has itself been given a trigger warning, cautioning readers about its own 'potentially triggering content'. The guidance was shared by Museum Development North, a heritage sector organisation that works in partnership with Arts Council England. The manual was produced to help staff in the heritage sector handle material relating to British history, and periods in which 'intolerant, discriminatory, and offensive attitudes and behaviours were significantly more prevalent than they are today '. The guidance warns that museum workers will inevitably have to discuss 'material which represents a break with the diverse social and cultural landscape of the present day '. It states that this may be emotionally triggering, and some workers may not be able to 'comfortably engage with the material at hand'. The manual urges museum bosses to clearly signpost any material that could be emotionally disturbing, and provides a list of topics that could be upsetting. These topics include 'classism', 'politics', 'policing', 'transmisogyny', and 'genomics' – the study of an organism's genetic structure. The guidance also advises museum workers to flag triggering content in all emails, discussions, presentations, and training materials. It adds that staff can recognise if material is triggering by the reaction to it, including people 'crying'. If a training session has been particularly triggering, psychological aftercare should be provided to any upset participants. The guidance states: 'Preventing triggers from happening is the most effective and inclusive way of demonstrating an active commitment to your training participants' mental health and psychological wellbeing.' Trigger warnings have become widespread across British universities and the publishing industry. In 2024, The Telegraph revealed that new editions of the James Bond novels and Agatha Christie mysteries had been given printed trigger warnings alerting readers to potentially outdated and racist attitudes in the books. Passages of these books were also rewritten ahead of release to remove words that could be deemed offensive. The Telegraph has previously revealed that Works by Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, EM Forster and PG Wodehouse have been given trigger warnings, cautioning readers about their more antiquated contents. In higher education, students have been alerted to the potentially upsetting nature of literary works from Beowulf to the novels of Thomas Hardy.

Fury at retail park's ferris wheel plans as locals say revellers will be able to look directly into their homes and gardens
Furious locals have hit out as plans for an 'intrusive' gian ferris wheel at a retail park, as they argue riders will be able to peer into their gardens. Residents living next to Ashford Designer Outlet in Kent, say the proposed 108ft structure would allow riders to look into their homes. Managers at neighbouring Cherrytree Nursery School have branded the wheel a 'vanity project' amid claims they weren't even consulted on proposals. And they believe the towering structure would pose safeguarding issues for children at their establishment. Meanwhile, other locals questioned who would want to get a birdseye view of the area - saying there's nothing to see but 'buildings'. Planning documents for the wheel, which would boast 24 separate gondolas, state it would operate six months a year for the next five years. The giant structure would also be as tall as around eight double-decker buses stacked on top of one another,. Proposals would see it be installed next to a play area on seven disabled parking spaces, which would be relocated elsewhere. Residents living next to Ashford Designer Outlet in Ashford, Kent, say the proposed 108ft structure would allow riders to look into their homes However, managers at the Cherrytree Nursery School, which would be directly below the wheel and has existed there for over 36 years - over a decade longer than the designer outlet, which opened in 2000 - say it would impede their privacy. The nursery was also outraged at not having been listed as an interested party in the planning application, claiming they were instead listed as a 'neighbour'. Marianne Everett, part of the management team at the nursery, says the structure would look straight down on them, raising safeguarding and privacy concerns for its children. 'It's not the idea of it, it's the positioning - it just seems like it's completely in the wrong place,' the 42-year-old said: '[The wheel] would look straight down on us. It's a vanity project. It's not necessary. 'If we were an actual school, they would have listed us as an interested party. 'I was gobsmacked that they hadn't considered the local community. 'We were listed as a neighbour, essentially. In their proposal, they have not put that there's a big nursery next door. 'It's not like we have a few children, we are up to 108 on the roll. It's a huge nursery. Its positioning feels like a bit of a kick in the [teeth]. She added: 'We have a wide range of children from different backgrounds and, with some, there's limited contact with certain members of family and others outside the family. 'The fact that people could look in and even try and take photos of the children feels really unnerving. 'As the nursery's safeguarding lead, it's a real worry for me. It's not something you could easily rectify as well. 'It's so high that no matter what you do, they are going to see the children. We have children on court orders with special educational needs. 'It's just very frustrating, the fact that we found out by being listed as a neighbour; we have been here for over 35 years.' Ms Everett added that the wheel could also increase traffic around what's already a 'really difficult' junction, saying: 'If there were any additional traffic, it would be horrendous.' Local resident Lucy Ralph, also worries riders on the wheel would be able to look at her grandson playing in the grass outside her flat block. 'I don't see the point in it,' the 50-year-old said: 'It's not a fairground, it's an outlook centre. 'It's Ashford; there's nothing to see up there apart from buildings. 'The nursery is worried about people looking at them in the garden out the back. 'My grandson plays outside the front as well. It's a private area. 'The flats here have lots of children who play out all summer with paddling pools and all sorts. It would hit their privacy.' Sarah Mabb, another local grandmother and mother-of-five, agreed, describing it as 'a bit intrusive'. 'They would be able to see our babies,' the 44-year-old said: 'I wouldn't be happy at all if my children went to the nursery. 'You just don't know, do you? There are some strange people around.' In a statement, Cherrytree Nursery School added that it hoped 'common sense' would prevail, resulting in the application for the wheel at its current proposed location being rejected. 'Cherrytree Nursery School prioritises putting children first,' the statement reads. 'The observation wheel will be at a height and placement that will directly look over our building and our wide-open outdoor play space. 'The nursery believes that vulnerable families should be safe to attend, including those fleeing domestic violence and others who may be concerned that court orders to prevent access, or details regarding attendance, are all put at risk due to a vanity project. 'Cherrytree Nursery School is also open over the school holidays in addition to term time; therefore, stating that the observation wheel is seasonal will still have a significant negative impact. 'The observation wheel at the designer outlet at first seems like an asset to the area. 'However, its precise placement is set to be a disaster for traffic, [an] invasion of privacy for those in the neighbourhood, and has the potential to put children in danger. 'Hopefully, the observation wheel's placement will be more thoroughly considered and the current proposal rejected, as common sense dictates it must.' But not all locals are vehemently against the ferris wheel, as local Silvia Worrell, thinks the plan for the wheel should be given the green light. 'It doesn't really bother me, as long as they don't park here,' the 73-year-old grandmother of seven said. We have got the Designer Outlet sticking up anyway.'
