China's rare earth curbs a 'wake-up call' as India builds alternative supply chains: Piyush Goyal

Time of India4 hours ago

Commerce and Industry Minister
Piyush Goyal
described China's
rare earth export
restrictions as a global "wake-up call" on Monday, emphasising that India is actively building alternative supply chains while positioning itself as a trusted partner for international businesses seeking to reduce their dependence on Chinese suppliers.
Speaking to reporters during his official visit to Switzerland, where he meets with Swiss government officials and business leaders, Goyal acknowledged that China's export curbs will create short-term challenges for India's automotive and white goods sectors. However, he expressed confidence that collaborative efforts between government, industry, and innovators will transform these challenges into long-term opportunities.
The minister outlined a comprehensive strategy to address the crisis, including diplomatic engagement through the Indian embassy's ongoing dialogue with Chinese authorities and the commerce ministry's efforts to identify alternative supply sources. The government is also strengthening
Indian Rare Earths Limited
by providing necessary resources to accelerate domestic production capabilities.
"This situation serves as a wake-up call for all those who have become over-reliant on certain geographies," Goyal emphasised. "It's a wake-up call for the whole world that you need trusted partners in your supply chain."
The
automotive industry
has specifically requested government assistance in expediting approval processes for importing rare earth magnets from China, which are essential components in passenger vehicles and various automotive applications.
Live Events
China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's
magnet production
capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems.
The new Chinese restrictions, effective from April 4, require special export licenses for seven specific rare earth elements and their related magnetic products. "There are clearly issues around the suspension of permanent magnet supplies from China to India, which will particularly affect our auto sector and several white goods manufacturers," Goyal explained. "Some companies have submitted their applications, and we hope that pragmatic considerations will prevail and they will receive the necessary approvals."
When questioned about potential government intervention through production-linked incentive schemes, Goyal reported encouraging discussions with automotive manufacturers. The companies have expressed strong confidence in their ability to address these supply chain challenges through partnerships with domestic innovators and startups.
"They are actively engaging with our innovators and startups, indicating they will provide any necessary funding or pricing adjustments to encourage faster rollout and growth of this sector," the minister noted.
He praised the evolving mindset within Indian industry, observing that companies are moving beyond traditional dependence on government subsidies. "More and more Indian industry is coming out of the old mindset that government subsidies and support alone will run our operations. They are becoming bigger and bolder in their approach."
Goyal highlighted ongoing technological developments that could provide alternative solutions to Chinese rare earth dependencies. "There are some technologies that India is developing," he noted, emphasising the collaborative approach involving government, industry, startups, and innovators.
"We are all working as a team and remain confident that while there may be challenges in the short run, we will emerge as winners in the medium to long term," he stated.
The minister viewed the current disruption as presenting strategic opportunities for India's manufacturing ecosystem. He believes it will accelerate recognition of the importance of self-reliance and the value of establishing trustworthy supply chain partnerships.
"There is an opportunity even in this crisis and challenge," Goyal observed. "More and more companies, businesses, and people in India will recognise that it is important to be self-reliant and to have trusted partners in supply chains. Increasingly, the world today wants India to be part of their supply chain because we are seen as a trusted partner." (ANI)

India May inflation likely cooled to 3% as food price pressure eases: Poll

India's consumer inflation rate likely eased to a more than six-year low of 3 per cent in May thanks to a favourable base and a further moderation in food prices, a Reuters poll forecast, supporting last week's larger-than-expected interest rate cut. On Friday the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stunned financial markets by slashing its key policy rate by 50 basis points, double what was predicted, to boost economic growth as inflation has remained subdued. The central bank, which targets inflation in the middle of its 2-6 per cent range in the medium term, also shifted its policy stance to 'neutral' from 'accommodative'. A snap Reuters poll after the decision found the RBI was likely done with cutting rates, wrapping up one of its shortest and shallowest easing cycles in more than a decade. The June 5-9 Reuters poll of 50 economists, published on Monday, forecast inflation measured by the annual change in the consumer price index (CPI) fell even further to 3.00 per cent in May from 3.16 per cent in April. That would mark the fourth consecutive month below the RBI's 4.0 per cent medium-term target, the longest such streak in nearly six years. It would also be the lowest inflation rate since April 2019, welcome news for many Indian households where food takes up a significant share of monthly expenses. Forecasts for the data due on Thursday at 1030 GMT ranged from 2.7 per cent to 3.7 per cent. "We are expecting a cooling of inflation to 3 per cent on a combination of a favourable base effect and... sequential moderation in prices of cereals and pulses even as most other segments started to strengthen," said Kanika Pasricha, chief economic advisor at Union Bank of India. "Prices of most food segments though continue to slide but the pace of correction is losing ground," she added. While concerns over widespread heatwaves raised fears of an inflation spike last month, a healthy harvest and the early arrival of monsoon rains helped ease those risks. "Even though there were heatwaves, I think the early monsoons across the country are likely to have cooled things off... most of the categories of food inflation seem to be contained," said Indranil Pan, chief economist at Yes Bank. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy items and is seen as a better indicator of domestic demand, was expected to have edged up to 4.20 per cent year-on-year in May, from an estimated 4.00 per cent-4.10 per cent in April, the poll showed. India's official statistics agency does not publish core inflation data. Wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation likely dipped to a 14-month low of 0.80 per cent in May from 0.85 per cent in April, the survey found. Mahanagar Gas stock valuations turn attractive after 30% fall in 8 months. Time to buy?

Mahanagar Gas share price in focus today: Mahanagar Gas, which is engaged in the business of City Gas Distribution (CGD), has seen its share price hammered by Dalal Street investors in recent months, resulting in a 30% decline over the past eight months, falling from ₹ 1,988 to the current trading level of ₹ 1,393 apiece. The weakness in the stock was driven by pressure on margins due to higher raw material costs, coupled with multiple APM de-allocations and a lack of clarity regarding future APM allocations. However, domestic brokerage firm Motilal Oswal believes the recent correction has made the stock's valuation attractive and maintains a positive stance on the stock. The brokerage said that company fundamentals are undergoing a transformative shift, citing two emerging tailwinds: weaker crude prices and a lower pricing slope for natural gas. It notes that the weak crude price outlook, along with an impending LNG glut, will likely lower gas costs for CGD companies. While Brent crude prices averaged USD 75.8 per barrel in Q4FY25, Motilal forecasts Brent to average USD 65 per barrel in FY26 and FY27. According to the brokerage, every USD 10 per barrel decline in Brent prices reduces the landed cost of natural gas by USD 2.3 per mmbtu. Further, Motilal's discussions with the listed and unlisted Indian CGD companies indicate that new long-term gas contracts are already being signed for a 1.0-3% lower slope, given the expected surge in LNG supply in 2HFY26 and beyond. The company, in the recent analyst meet, maintained its over 10% YoY volume growth guidance for the next 2-3 years, while Motilal expects a 10% CAGR in volume over FY25-27, driven by multiple initiatives implemented by the company, such as collaborating with OEMs to drive conversions of commercial CNG vehicles and providing guaranteed price discounts to new I/C-PNG customers. According to the management, EVs have limited overlap with the typical CNG customer base. Further, 15 BEST depot CNG stations shall now be available for specific commercial vehicles for fueling, subject to prior registration. By FY30, the company aims to add 250 CNG filling stations and upgrade existing stations. Further, the 1 GW battery manufacturing factory, entailing a capex of ₹ 9 billion (MGL's equity stake: 40%), shall start in 12-14 months. Further, while both CBG and LNG business segments are at the initial stages, the company believes in scaling up these businesses rapidly over the next few years, said the brokerage. Mahanagar Gas remains the brokerage's preferred pick among CGDs and retained its estimates as it forecasted the company's volumes to clock a 10% CAGR over FY25-27 and estimated an EBITDA margin of ₹ 10/scm during the period. It reiterated 'buy' with a price target of ₹ 1,760 apiece. The stock currently trades at 11x FY27E EPS of ₹ 121. The brokerage valued the stock at 15x FY27E EPS to arrive at its price target of ₹ 1,760. Disclaimer: The views and recommendations given in this article are those of individual analysts.
