Raiders stun Storm after golden-point drama
Comeback kings Canberra have stunned Melbourne to win 20-18 in golden point in one of the most controversial finishes in NRL history.
Raiders captain Jamal Fogarty landed the match-clinching 85th minute penalty after Storm forward Trent Loiero was pinged for a high shot on Hudson Young in front of the posts..
The Storm looked set for a Magic Round victory in regulation time.
Leading 18-12, Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, in his 100th NRL game, appeared to have sealed the win with a 75th-minute field goal.
The one-point was disallowed due to Loiero being penalised while possession for an elbow to the head of Raiders prop Joe Topine in a previous play, after referee Gerard Sutton appeared to ask the Bunker for a review.
Three minutes later Raiders fullback Kaeo Weekes scored a stunning individual try. From 50m out he raced away, chipped over Papenhuyzen's head, regathered and scored to send the match into golden point.
The drama escalated when Storm prop Stefano Utoikamanu was penalised and sin-binned while in possession for stomping on Raiders hooker Tom Starling when his team was in front of the sticks.
Raiders prop Josh Papalii was binned for running in and getting involved.
Fogarty then stepped up to win it with a pressure penalty.
Scintillating Storm winger Sua Fa'alogo earlier shone.
The final Magic Round clash lived up to its billing as the match of the round with both sides inside the top four.
Pocket rocket Fa'alogo set up two tries, scored one and made three line breaks in a dazzling display.
The Raiders refused to relent. They had come back from an 18-point deficit to win their previous clash with the Dolphins.
They were behind 14-0 after 25 minutes against the Storm and again rallied to narrow the margin to two at halftime.
Melbourne had given up a 16-2 lead to lose 42-22 to the Dolphins last time they played at the venue and would have had a sense of deja vu.
Fa'alogo's try in the 59th minute restored a six-point advantage.
In the first half Cameron Munster eyed space on the left after a scything Faalogo bust. His left-foot kick was precision personified and centre Grant Anderson swooped.
Faalogo set up a try for Papenhuyzen with a play of pure audacity and scintillating skill. The speedy winger broke down the right from 70m out and at full speed hooked an inch-perfect kick onto a flying Papenhuyzen's chest. It was Magic Round magic.
The Raiders, however, are never beaten.
Hulking Raiders winger Savelio Tamale, who had a blinder, got the better of Fa'alogo with brute strength to score in the corner.
Raiders centre Matt Timoko was too strong and determined for three Storm defenders as he scored and it was game on at the break.
There was plenty of feeling between two rivals with a history of titanic battles. Two skirmishes between multiple players broke out before Utoikamanu and Tapine exchanged open-handed shoves with the Storm giant penalised while in possession.
Papalii was also put on report for foul play after he gave Papenhuyzen a facial.

Fever locks in Super Netball finals spot with eighth straight win
West Coast Fever have locked in a Super Netball finals berth for the sixth consecutive year, after their 69-63 Round 10 victory over a feisty Melbourne Mavericks. Fever have now won eight straight and with an excellent goal percentage, this means that even if they drop their remaining four games there is no mathematical chance of them falling out of the top four. The reverse is true for the Mavericks, with finals now completely out of reach after another horrific year battling injuries. With rostered player Lauren Parkinson yet to play a game after an ACL injury sustained before the season even started last year, and Eleanor Cardwell still missing after knee surgery, it's been a cruel introduction for the league's newest team. With Parkinson still out of action, Mavericks rookie goal keeper Jessie Grenvold got the start to add height in their defensive circle. However, the youngster was no match for experienced Jamaican Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard who opened scoring for Fever less than ten seconds from the starting whistle. By the end of the match, Fowler-Nembhard piled on 57 from 58. Mavericks defenders were working overtime to get their hands to the ball and by mid-way through the second term they were leading deflections 8-0. Unfortunately not enough of those touches converted on the scoreboard as Fever pushed their advantage to lead by 11 at halftime. Training partner, Uneeq Palavi saw her first minutes of the game in the second term. The Tongan shooter sits fifth in the league for super shots so was given a simple task: lessen the score differential. The change was made again in the third and fourth terms with Palavi and shooting partner Sasha Glasgow creating a lively change up that Fever defenders had trouble containing. Collectively, they nailed nine from 13 attempts from long range but it was all for nought as Fever ground out the game to win by six, despite tinkering with their usual lineup. 'She is an ice queen,' said Mavericks captain Amy Parmenter of Palavi. 'She has such a big future and I love how she takes it on and embraces it.' With time running out to impress the national selectors, the battle between Parmenter and influential wing attack Alice Teague-Neeld, took on extra spice. Both players are on the fringe of selection, and have been in excellent form for their respective sides. Teague-Neeld had the best of the match-up, finishing with 33 feeds as she gave her shooting circle impeccable service in an MVP performance. Meanwhile, Parmenter was one of the most penalised on court for just one gain. 'That game of netball was more fun than some of the ones we have played over the last few weeks,' Parmenter said. 'I saw some fire and some big moments. 'But, I think our biggest headache at the moment is we go into help mode and we aren't brave and don't give the ball like we do at training every week.' JAMAICAN JUGGERNAUTS Despite not playing the first two rounds, Fever's Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard has rocketed up the leader board of the league's most potent shooters. She sits second in the league for total goals this season (sinking 430) and first to accuracy (97%). The Mavericks' Shimona Jok sits third for total goals (405) and second for accuracy (95%). Netball continues to raise awareness of the impact of domestic and family violence, with the Mavericks inaugural Orange Game. Craig Hutchison, CEO of SEN which owns the Mavericks, said it was 'a powerful reminder of the role sport can play in driving social change'. The initiative follows the Australian Netball Players Association drive for change, and Diamond Cara Koenen's revelation that like one in four women, she's experienced sexual assault.

Craig Williams cops suspension on Stradbroke Handicap pick-up ride
Craig Williams ' late Group 1 pick-up ride on Rothfire has resulted in the champion Victorian jockey being suspended for 14 days. Williams had been set to ride Gary Portelli's mare Kimochi in the Stradbroke Handicap until the Yulong-owned mare injured her tendon on Friday. He was then without a Stradbroke ride but gained one when James McDonald, who has been battling illness, was unable to make the weight on Rothfire. However, the story had a sting in its tail with Williams suspended for careless riding for a back straight incident where Spicy Martini was tightened up. Cejay Graham also came to the attention of stewards and was suspended for 14 days for careless riding on King Kapa in the Hinkler Handicap.
