Top-seeded American Taylor Fritz exits French Open after shocking 1st-round upset

American tennis pro Taylor Fritz was ousted from the French Open in the first round on Monday in a shocking upset orchestrated by Germany's Daniel Altmaier.
The 66th-ranked player defeated Fritz, the No. 4 seed and the reigning U.S. Open runner-up, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at Court Simonne-Mathieu in Paris on Monday. He broke his serve five times.
"It's kind of what's been going on a bit lately," Fritz told reporters after the match, via Tennis.com . "I think I'm playing generally fine. It's just a lot of important points. I just am like playing horrendous tennis on a lot of the important points."

Fritz is only the latest top-ranked tennis pro to fall victim to Altmaier in Paris.
Just two years ago, he upset Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner at the French Open after upsetting No. 8 seed Matteo Berrettini in 2020 at Roland Garros as well.
"It was very special," Altmaier said after the match, via Tennis.com. "I think I was working really hard the past weeks to get confidence, preparing myself for those kinds of matches."

"I feel like I'm ready to play whoever is going to face me. I'm really happy to get this first win and I really love my performance," he added.
Altmaier will next face Vit Kopriva, who defeated Thiago Monteiro in five sets to advance to the second round.
Fritz was the highest-seeded American man in Paris since Andy Roddick competed in the French Open as the No. 3 seed in 2007. He was also the first American to reach a men's Grand Slam singles final with his U.S. Open appearance last year since Roddick did so in 2009.

Fritz moves on to Wimbledon next month, where he previously reached the quarterfinals in 2022 and 2024.

Scoring 24 goals and providing four assists as Osasuna finished ninth and only just missed out on European qualification to Rayo Vallecano, Budimir turns 34 on July 22 and can be picked up for a cut fee. That's around $9 million (€8 million) if his next stop is elsewhere in Spain, with another couple of million euros slapped on to the price if a potential suitor is located elsewhere. If Budimir could be bought and scores the important goals to land titles like Joselu did, his transfer would pretty much end up paying for itself. Though Kylian Mbappe will likely remain Xabi Alonso's first choice for the striker's position, bringing in Budimir would obviously give the ex-Leverkusen tactician further options up front. Essentially, the potential new acquisition would battle for leftover minutes with Endrick, who enjoyed little prominence on Ancelotti's watch at Real Madrid but could now be reunited with him on international duty for Brazil.

Cristiano Ronaldo ends unwanted record after scoring winner for Portugal against Germany
There are not many things that Cristiano Ronaldo hasn't already done in his record-breaking career to date, but the 40-year-old ticked off yet another achievement on Wednesday. The striker scored the winner in Portugal's 2-1 victory against Germany in the UEFA Nations League semifinal, marking the first time Ronaldo has ever beaten Die Mannschaft. Ronaldo had lost all five times he previously played Germany and Portugal had not won this fixture in 25 years. As well as ending the unwanted record, the victory also sent Portugal through to the UEFA Nations League final on June 8 where it will face either defending champion Spain or France. In his 220th appearance for the national side, Ronaldo yet again proved the difference. Portugal had initially gone behind in the semifinal after Florian Wirtz headed Germany ahead in the 48th minute, before Francisco Conceição whipped in a brilliant equalizer just after the hour mark. The stage was then set for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner to score the winner just five minutes later, tapping into an open net after Nuno Mendes teed him up with a square pass. It was Ronaldo's 137th international goal for Portugal and the 937th of his career, extending the two records he already has. The last time Portugal beat Germany was back in Euro 2000, when Sérgio Conceição scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win during the group stage. It was fitting, then, that his son Francisco scored in Wednesday's win, helping to end the long-running winless streak. 'We need to enjoy the victory. We won for the first time in a while against Germany,' Portugal manager Roberto Martínez said after the game, per Reuters. 'Tactically, we were exceptional and our commitment helped. It was a team victory. 'Now, we can recover and evaluate. We want another performance with personality in this shirt.' Despite his age and the fact he's been playing in Saudi Arabia for the last three seasons, Ronaldo has proven yet again that he has the ability to still perform at a high level. But where exactly he will play next season is currently up for debate. The Portuguese star raised questions about his future with a cryptic social media post last month. 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Thanks to all,' Ronaldo wrote with a picture of him in his Al Nassr kit. It comes as FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently suggested that Ronaldo may well play in this year's inaugural Club World Cup, suggesting a move away from Al Nassr which failed to qualify. His contract is set to expire at the end of this season leaving him free to sign with any club he chooses.
