On the run since 2008, Moradabad court jails Hizbul terrorist for 10 years
Bareilly: A Moradabad court sentenced a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist to 10 years in prison for his role in a 2002 terror plot involving explosives and weapons. Ulfat Hussain, also known as Mohammad Saiful Islam and a resident of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir, was arrested in his home state in March this year, 17 years after he absconded after being released on bail in 2008.
Hussain was first arrested by Katghar police on July 9, 2002, along with three other terrorists. Based on their information, police recovered an AK-47, an AK-56, two 30-bore pistols, 12 hand grenades, 29kg of explosive material, 50 detonators, 39 timers, 8 magazines and 560 live cartridges. Officers suspected the group had planned to target religious sites and crowded areas in Moradabad.
After being granted bail in 2008, Hussain went into hiding.
He remained at large for nearly 17 years. Moradabad court issued permanent warrants against him in 2015 and again in 2025. A reward of 25,000 rupees was announced for his arrest. On March 8, 2025, a joint operation by UP ATS and Katghar police led to his arrest in Poonch. He was brought to Moradabad and lodged in jail.
Additional district govt counsel Suresh Singh said, "After a prolonged trial, the court of additional district judge Chhaya Sharma found him guilty and awarded him 10 years in jail." The court convicted him under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, section 5 of the Explosives Substances Act, and section 25 of the Arms act.

SC stays trial against former Haryana IAS officer in Manesar land case
The Supreme Court has stayed trial proceedings against former Haryana IAS officer Rajeev Arora in the Manesar land deal, investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The former IAS officer had petitioned the apex court after his revision petition challenging his summoning by a special CBI court was dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana high court on May 15. A special CBI court had on December 1, 2020 ordered that the former IAS officer be summoned to face trial for committing offence under section 120-B read with 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the Manesar land matter. However, on a revision petition filed by Arora, the Punjab and Haryana high court on December 14, 2020 had stayed the operation and implementation of the order of the special CBI court. Rejecting the challenge to the special CBI court's December 1, 2020 order, the HC on May15 said it found no illegality or infirmity in the order passed by learned special CBI court in summoning the petitioners. An apex court bench headed by chief justice BR Gavai, however, on May 29 ordered that notice be issued to the respondents and 'proceedings qua the petitioner (Rajeev Arora) shall stand stayed till the next date of hearing.' During the trial court proceedings on Friday, Special CBI judge, Rajeev Goyal while referring to the apex court's order of May 29 ordered that proceedings against all the accused persons except Rajeev Arora shall commence. The special court in its June 6 order noted that it is, therefore, seen that all the accused except accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba, DR Dhingra and Rajeev Arora, have been ordered to be charge-sheeted qua the offences as detailed in the order December 1, 2020. The court said that now arguments need to be advanced on charges in respect of accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra. Learned defence counsels seek time to prepare the arguments. Learned senior public prosecutor Harsh Mohan Singh submits that charge-sheet may kindly be framed against the accused persons who have already been ordered to be charge-sheeted vide order dated December 1,2020. 'I am not able to accept the submission made by the senior public prosecutor as it will not be appropriate to frame charge-sheet before considering the case concerning framing of charges in respect of accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra. In case, the court after hearing contentions of the said accused persons and senior public prosecutor for CBI, concludes that charges are required to be framed against said accused persons as well, then a consolidated charge-sheet qua all the accused persons shall be framed and in my opinion, it will be more appropriate if such a course is adopted, for framing charge-sheet in a piecemeal manner is not desirable. As such, to come up on July 10, 2025 for arguments on charge qua accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra,'' ordered the special court.

State legislature employee gets 7-year jail term for misappropriation of funds
MUMBAI: A cashier at the state legislature was sentenced to seven years in jail on May 5 by a special court under the Prevention of Corruption Act, for misappropriation of government funds and for amassing a disproportionate amount of assets from March 1991 to December 2004. An FIR had been registered against the accused, Manoj Gaonkar, in 2005 at the Marine Drive police station, and the anti-corruption bureau had taken over the case and revealed that he had acquired ₹19.24 lakh, which was 109.62% more than his known sources of income. Gaonkar's advocate contradicted the charges and claimed that there was no significant amount in his account. However, the prosecution examined 12 witnesses, including investigating officers and bank officials, and key evidence included salary records, loan statements, demat account transactions, and property purchase documents. The court said, 'The investigation was thorough, the computation was corroborated by official records, and testimonies were consistent.' Additional sessions judge Shahikant E Bangar held the accused guilty under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and said that despite being given multiple opportunities, he was unable to explain the extra assets in his possession. The court said, 'He committed forgery, cheating, and criminal breach of trust under IPC,' and added that the state was not to show him any leniency. In 2018, Gaonkar was sentenced to five years in prison for siphoning off ₹63,000 from a member of the legislative council's medical claim and misappropriating over ₹52.3 lakh from the state government funds in 2005. He had misappropriated money from the travel allowance of member of the legislative assembly, Anil Gote, by forging challans and making wrong entries in the cash book.
