Maxi's back! Aussie wows US with 13 sixes in super ton
Glenn Maxwell may have called time on his one-day international career but he's shown his T20 brilliance remains undimmed as he took the 'Big Show' Stateside with a thrilling, landmark century in Major League Cricket.
'Maxi', who announced his decision to depart the international 50-over scene at the start of the month, demonstrated why he must still be in contention for T20 World Cup duty next year as he became the first Australian to crash a ton in the third season of the US competition.
Putting on his inimitable best for champions Washington Freedom, captain Maxwell, who had a wretched time in the Indian Premier League before a broken finger ruled him out of the business end of Punjab Kings' season, smashed 106no off just 49 balls as they crushed Los Angeles Knight Riders by 113 runs.
Coming in at No.6 with the Freedom in some bother at 4-68 in the eighth over on Tuesday, a typically thunderous Maxwell affair, featuring 13 sixes and a couple of fours, helped blitz Freedom to 5-208 before the Washington bowlers then skittled LA for 95. It was the 36-year-old's eighth T20 ton in all.
Maxwell was delighted to get back among the runs again after scoring just 48 in his six IPL innings for the Kings - and reckoned he owed a big score to his great friend and coach at both franchises, Ricky Ponting.
"It felt like just a bit of time out in the middle was all I needed to feel that confidence coming back," said Maxwell.
"I've probably let him [Ponting] down in a few of the tournaments that we've played together. It's nice that last year we were able to have success in the Freedom together, and it was a shame I couldn't be around for a lot of the back end of the IPL where I broke my finger.
"I think in this tournament, to be captain and play under him, I feel like we've got a great opportunity to hopefully add to last year's trophy."
At the start of June, Maxwell called it a day after 149 ODIs, a career that featured surely the greatest innings of all-time in the format, his amazing unbeaten double ton that lifted Australia to a critical victory over Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup.
There were echoes of that magic knock in the far less pressurised situation of an MLC game at the Oakland Coliseum as he dealt almost exclusively in sixes, lambasting the seventh T20 century in the tournament's short history while helping them plunder 124 in the final 10 overs.
His fellow Aussie teammate Mitchell Owen had also kicked off the fun with 32 off 11 balls as opener before he later delivered with the ball too, taking 3-18 to help dismantle the LA response.

No chip on Giants star midfielder's dislocated shoulder
GWS star Finn Callaghan has already lost a month to an injury, so he won't waste any more time lamenting on what could've been. There's no chip on Callaghan's shoulder after the highly-rated midfielder produced a roaring comeback in the Giants' smash-and-grab win over Brisbane at the Gabba. The 22-year-old missed three games after dislocating his right shoulder in the Giants' round-10 loss to Fremantle. Callaghan was hurt in an innocuous collision with Dockers forward Patrick Voss in a marking contest at the three-quarter-time siren. Voss walked off unscathed, while Callaghan - whose opposing left shoulder was already taped up - played the final quarter in clear discomfort. "That's going to happen more in my career, I'm sure," Callaghan said. "A little bit unlucky, you could say, but we were both just trying to go for the ball, and sometimes these things happen. "I made sure I did everything I could so I could recover as quick as possible. "I really wanted to be back out there playing. I hate missing games of footy." He showed no signs of rust on return against the reigning premiers, clocking 32 disposals and five clearances in their semi-final rematch. "We were certainly really fired up for the game against Brisbane," Callaghan said. "After a few inconsistent weeks, it built up to be a really big game, one that we wanted to put our best foot forward and play well. "It was good to be back out there playing, certainly better than watching on the couch." GWS will look to post back-to-back wins when they host Gold Coast on Sunday, in what shapes as the biggest edition of the so-called Expansion Cup between the league's youngest franchises. The Giants are seventh (8-6), while the Suns have dropped to sixth (8-4) after two straight losses. "I hope we're both playing finals. There's still a fair few games to go before we can say that's going to happen but they're certainly in great form," Callaghan said. "I feel like we're both on similar trajectories this season and it's going to be an exciting match-up." GWS could recall stars Toby Greene (glute) and Jake Stringer (hamstring) for this weekend's clash. But the club's injury woes continue, with All-Australian defender Sam Taylor out for a month after fracturing a toe and small forward Brent Daniels succumbing to another abdominal issue. Callaghan won't despair, saying he is relishing his role as an emerging leader. "I feel like certainly I've taken some extra responsibility," Callaghan said. "I'm here for the next four years, that probably gives the boys some confidence, but I want to make the next four years as good as it can be for myself. "I want to win, so I feel like it all stems from there."

How new coach can be 'missing piece' for Matildas
New coach Joe Montemurro can be the missing piece to deliver the current generation of Matildas elusive silverware at the 2026 Asian Cup, says veteran striker Emily Gielnik. Montemurro has kicked off his tenure, with Gielnik among those in his first squad for upcoming games against Slovenia and Panama in Western Australia. Friday's squad announcement marks the first step towards next year's tournament on home soil, where the Matildas are chasing their first trophy since their 2010 Asian Cup triumph. "We haven't quite found the missing piece in terms of the right squad to go and lift a trophy again. And I think Joe might be that missing piece to finding that perfect combination of players," Gielnik told AAP. "I've always been someone that thinks you don't need the most talented players, you need the right people. "Of course, you need talent - that's inevitable, but you need the right people, the right culture and all those things that maybe have been just ever so slightly missing over the last few years. "If he can piece that puzzle together, I think we can dominate the Asian Cup, and we have a good chance moving forward into the next World Cup." Gielnik played some of the best football of her career when Ante Milicic took the reins in 2019 and hopes to repeat that. "It keeps the belief alive," Gielnik said. "It's also a fresh start. It's a clean slate. I'm going to be in the present and just put my best foot forward and I'm excited to start this new chapter with Joe. "I've only ever heard great things about him. "I obviously have watched his career unfold, so I'm excited to learn from him, to play for him, and just to see the freshness and the life that he brings back into this Matildas camp. "With his successful CV, I have no doubt that he's the right man for the job, without even having played for him yet." Gielnik has club options overseas and an offer from Victory on the table. The former Bayern Munich attacker would prefer to play overseas again but plans to get feedback from former Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon boss Montemurro. First, the 33-year-old, overlooked regularly by Tony Gustavsson and Tom Sermanni, has a point to prove. "I shed a couple of tears," she said of her call-up. "For sure I have some little doubts that come in, but I've never really, truly given up - not in a million years. "I still see a good couple of years left in me. I still have ambition to play abroad, to be at that Asian Cup and I'm never going to lose sight of that. "This is a massive opportunity for me to be a part of this Asian Cup, considering I missed out on the World Cup at home. "I'll do everything to be a part of that."
