South Korea's auto exports to US drops in April (YoY) amid US tariffs: Report

India Gazette20-05-2025

New Delhi [India], May 20 (ANI): South Korea's automobile exports declined in April year on year, largely due to a sharp drop in shipments to the United States following Washington's imposition of steep tariffs on foreign-made cars, reports the Korean Herald, quoting government data.
The value of outbound shipments of automobiles was down 3.8 per cent to USD 6.53 billion in April shows the data of South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Exports to North America declined 17.8 per cent to USD 3.36 billion in April 2025, as compared with April 2024. Shipments to the US also plunged 19.6 per cent to USD 2.89 billion.
South Korea's car industry is seeing strong growth, both at home and overseas.
Exports to the European Union (EU) jumped by 26.7 per cent in April, reaching USD 953 million, due to strong sales of electric models like Kia's EV3 and Hyundai's Casper Electric, the Korean Herald report added.
At home, car sales also rose for the third month in a row, increasing by 6.7 per cent compared to last year.
Electric and hybrid cars were especially popular, with EV sales growing by over 50 per cent and hybrid sales by nearly 30 per cent. Together, both the segments made up 46 per cent of all the 151,000 cars sold in South Korea last month, as per the report.
However, the industry is keeping a close eye on a new 25 per cent import tax that the US introduced on April 3, a policy that started under former President Donald Trump.
The report adds that in order to support the industry, the South Korean government announced plans to inject an additional 2 trillion won (USD 1.43 billion) in liquidity into the industry. It is in addition to the previously pledged 13 trillion won in policy financing.
Meanwhile, South Korea and the US will start detailed discussions this week to reach a broader agreement by early July. These talks will focus on the new US tariffs and how the two countries can work together on economic and industrial issues.
South Korea has also pledged to work on strengthening the domestic automotive sector. Measures such as subsidies for EV purchases, extended tax incentives for new vehicle buyers and efforts to diversify export markets will be taken. (ANI)

India continues to remain an attractive investment destination, says RBI governor

India continues to draw strong foreign investor interest, with gross foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows rising 14 per cent to USD 81 billion in FY2024-25, Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra said Friday, saying that India continues to be an attractive investment destination. The rise in gross FDI, from USD 71.3 billion a year ago, shows growing confidence in India's economic fundamentals. However, net FDI inflows moderated to USD 0.4 billion in 2024-25 from USD 10.1 billion a year ago, governor said that it is sign of a maturing economy where capital inflows and outflows coexist, offering investors both entry and exit flexibility. 'Rise in repatriation is a sign of a mature market where foreign investors can enter and exit smoothly, while high gross FDI indicates that India continues to remain an attractive investment destination,' said governor. Other capital flows also increased. Net inflows through external commercial borrowings (ECBs) surged to USD 18.7 billion in FY2024-25, compared with just USD 3.6 billion the previous year. Non-resident deposits recorded higher net inflows of USD 16.2 billion, up from USD 14.7 billion. Despite recent outflows in foreign portfolio investment (FPI), USD 2.1 billion in FY2025-26 until June 4, the country's external buffers remain solid. Foreign exchange reserves stood at USD 691.5 billion as of May 30, sufficient to cover over 11 months of goods imports and nearly 96 per cent of external debt. Also the current account deficit remained contained at 0.7 per cent of GDP in FY2023-24. External debt-to-GDP rose marginally to 19.1 per cent as of December 2024, from 18.5 per cent in March 2024. 'Overall, India's external sector remains resilient as key external sector vulnerability indicators continue to improve,' the governor said. 'We remain confident of meeting our external financing requirements.'

Kyiv under attack days after ‘Operation Spiderweb'; Ukrainians narrate horror: ‘shocked I'm alive'

Powerful explosions reverberated across the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv early on Friday (June 6) as it came under an intense overnight missile and drone barrage from Russia. The attack followed a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin, conveyed via U.S. leader Donald Trump, that the Kremlin would hit back after Ukrainian drones destroyed several strategic bomber aircraft in attacks deep inside Russia.

Chenab rail bridge inaugration: Ashwini Vaishnaw hails 'historic day'; Made possible due to PM Modi's 'steely determination'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the final stretch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL), officially connecting Kashmir to the rest of India via rail for the first time in history. The event marked the launch of the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River and the country's first cable-stayed Anji Bridge. Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called the occasion 'historic', as the long-cherished dream of linking the Kashmir Valley through rail finally came true thanks to the ' steely determination, hard work and laser-sharp focus of our Prime Minister.' 'The nation had nurtured the dream of the Jammu-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line for decades,' Vaishnaw said at the inauguration in Katra. 'There were great challenges in its construction... Instead of trying to conquer nature, working in harmony with nature, this railway line has become a reality today through this network of bridges and tunnels,' ANI quoted the rail minister. Describing the day as one where 'another jewel has been added to Maa Bharti's crown', Vaishnaw praised the engineering feat behind the 359-metre-high Chenab Bridge, which now stands as tallest railway bridge in the world and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway structure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Encontre voos low-cost Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Both form critical links in the 272-km USBRL project, built at a cost of over Rs 43,780 crore. Prime Minister Modi also flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra, establishing high-speed rail connectivity between the Jammu division and Kashmir. The trains, customised for the cold climatic conditions of the valley, will cut travel time between Katra and Srinagar from 6–7 hours by road to just about three hours. Before the launch, the Prime Minister interacted with schoolchildren and railway staff on board, and in a symbolic gesture, waved the national flag from the deck of the Chenab Bridge. The USBRL project includes 36 tunnels spanning 119 km and 943 bridges, a monumental effort across some of India's most challenging terrain. Officials say the all-weather rail connectivity will usher in a new era of economic growth, tourism, and social inclusion in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha and former chief minister Omar Abdullah were also present at the ceremony.
