Olorato Mongale: South African police name suspects linked to murder of student on date
Police in South Africa have named three men believed to be directly involved in the murder of a university student who had gone on a date. Olorato Mongale's body was discovered on Sunday in Lombardy, north of Johannesburg, about two hours after she was reported missing.Police late on Wednesday said they had seized a VW Polo that was allegedly used in the murder of the 30-year-old student. "The vehicle was found with traces of blood inside at a panel beater workshop in Phoenix, Durban," police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said.
One man, who police believed was the owner of the vehicle, has been arrested. Photographs of three other suspects - Fezile Ngubane, Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya and Bongani Mthimkhulu - who are said to be on the run, have been released by police.Brig Mathe said the men were "dangerous" and cautioned members of the public not to come near them.A reminder of South Africa's femicide problemSouth Africa: Violence against women like a war"These suspects are warned to hand themselves over at their nearest police station."Ms Mongale was last seen on Sunday in the company of a man she had met a few days earlier at a mall.CCTV footage showed her leaving a location in Kew, Johannesburg, and walking towards a white VW Polo, with fake licence plates.Her friends said she was invited for a date by a man only identified as John, who she met in Johannesburg, where she was studying for a postgraduate degree at Witwatersrand University.She texted one of her friends shortly before leaving home, saying that she was excited and getting ready for her date.But police later found her body in an open field, sparking public outrage and calls for justice.Family spokesperson Criselda Kananda said Ms Mongale's body was "brutally violated."A candlelight vigil was held on Wednesday evening in Lombardi West, at the site where the body was found dumped. Family and friends have described her as an outspoken, bubbly woman who "lived with purpose and love", local media reported. Ms Mongale was a journalism graduate from Rhodes University and worked briefly as a multimedia reporter at the TimesLIVE news website. While working as a journalist, she covered the murder of Karabo Mokoena - a young woman who was murdered by her boyfriend in 2017. Ms Mongale's killing has sparked a fierce debate about the levels of violence faced by women in South Africa.It is the latest femicide in a country which has a particular problem with femicide and violence against women.In 2020, an average of one woman died at the hands of her intimate partner every eight hours, according to a study by the University of the Free State.In 2019, South Africa ranked among the five countries with the highest rates of the murder of women, according to the United Nations.The country has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world, with rape being the most reported crime against children.

Mum-of-two now charged with MURDER of ex after he died in acid attack ‘plotted by crime gang'
A MUM accused of teaming up with a crime gang to kill her ex in an acid attack has now been charged with murder. The horror unfolded on February 21 as Danny's daughter was sleeping upstairs. Following the attack, he was taken to a hospital outside Plymouth for his own safety. His family said in a statement: "As a family, we are struggling to come to terms with Danny's passing. "Danny was an outstanding father and son. Danny and his mum had so much love for each other. "He is well loved by his family and friends and as a family we cherish his love and memories. "We ask the family are please given privacy and respect during this time." Mum-of-two Wilson previously worked as a probation officer in the city's Barbican area — helping released criminals with housing and jobs. She also volunteered at Dartmoor Prison, teaching male inmates to read and write. 6 6 6

Stalker shoots dead beauty influencer TikTok star hours after she posted final video cutting her 17th birthday cake
A man has been arrested in Pakistan for shooting a TikTok star dead just hours after she posted a video of herself celebrating her 17th birthday, according to police. Sana Yousaf, who turned 17 last week and had more than a million followers across her social media accounts, was killed at her home in the capital Islamabad on Monday evening. The 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of her murder had spent hours loitering outside her home in the lead up to her death, police said. 'It was a case of repeated rejections. The boy was trying to reach out to her time and again,' Islamabad police chief Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said during a news conference. 'It was a gruesome and cold-blooded murder,' Rizvi added. Yousaf had more than 800,000 followers on TikTok, a wildly popular platform in Pakistan, where she posted lip-sync videos, skincare tips, and promotional content for beauty products. The last video posted on her account was hours before her murder, in which she was seen cutting a cake for her birthday. The comments section of the video was flooded with tributes from fans and fellow TikTok creators, with many reading: 'Rest in Peace' and 'Justice for Sana'. Influencer Waliya Najib wrote: 'This doesn't feel real. You were glowing, just being 17. I'm so sorry this world didn't protect you. Rest in peace, sweetheart.' UK-based content creator Kashaf Ali wrote: 'This is so awful. A literal 17 year old with so much innocence, killed for what?' Violence against women is pervasive in Pakistan according to the country's Human Rights Commission, and cases of women being attacked after rejecting marriage proposals are not uncommon. Earlier this year, a father who moved his family from the United States to Pakistan was arrested after shooting his daughter dead in an alleged 'honour killing' over her use of social media. Anwar ul-Haq, believed to be a US citizen, was charged with murder after he admitted to shooting his 15-year-old daughter Hira dead. Mr ul-Haq had reportedly forbidden his daughter from making TikTok videos which he deemed 'inappropriate', and decided to kill her when she continued to post. Hira's family 'had an objection to her dressing, lifestyle and social gathering,' according to police. He said the father of the 15-year-old girl initially suggested that an unidentified gunman had killed his daughter, but after he was taken into custody for questioning he confessed to the crime. In 2021, 27-year-old Noor Mukadam was beheaded by her Pakistani-American boyfriend, Zahir Jaffer, after she rejected his marriage proposal in a case that sparked widespread anger. In 2016, Khadija Siddiqui survived being stabbed 23 times by a jilted ex-boyfriend. Yousaf's death comes after another TikTok beauty influencer was brutally murdered last month. Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old TikToker and aesthetician, was shot multiple times while broadcasting live from inside her beauty salon in western Mexico. Her senseless killing was just another example of the violence against women epidemic which Mexico is grappling with. The country has long been plagued by 'machismo' culture and violence against women, which can range from comments on the street to, in its most extreme form, acid attacks and brutal murders.
