Prudential Group Insurance President: The Workforce Risk Employers Can't Afford to Ignore

Business leaders are focused on plenty of external risks right now—economic volatility, changing regulations, and rising costs. But there's another threat that isn't getting enough attention: A growing disconnect between what employees need from their benefits and what companies are offering.
That gap is more than a human resources issue. It's a blind spot with real bottom-line consequences. It puts recruiting, reputation, and retention at risk at a time when none of those can be taken for granted.

In Prudential's Benefits & Beyond 2025 study, we found that while 86 percent of employers say their benefits are modern, only 59 percent of employees agree. And the impact shows up quickly: When benefits are seen as modern, employee satisfaction hits 91 percent, and 90 percent say they're likely to stay. But when benefits don't feel relevant, satisfaction drops to 68 percent and retention falls to 73 percent.
In my years in the workplace benefits industry, I've seen companies lose great talent—not because of salary, but because the support didn't line up with people's lives. Lack of caregiving help, limited mental health access, or the stress of unexpected medical costs can be a catalyst to quiet quitting—or walking away entirely.
And I've seen something else too: wide disparities in how benefits are packaged, delivered, and explained. Across the industry, there's little consistency. Some employers offer robust options—legal services, supplemental health, accident insurance—while others offer just the basics. Even more troubling is how little education employees receive about their options. Too often, they're left to decode PDFs in a short open enrollment window—hardly the recipe for confident decisions.
We're at a turning point—and historically, this kind of disconnect is rare. There have only been a handful of times when employers and employees were this far apart on what a "good job" looks like: During the industrial shifts of the late 20th century, the dot-com boom when perks replaced real support, and now, in a post-pandemic workforce shaped by new expectations.
People are juggling more than ever—family responsibilities, mental health challenges, rising costs, and the need for more flexibility. They're not just asking for more benefits—they're asking for better ones.
But many companies still miss the mark. Employers often prioritize mental and physical health. But employees told us their biggest concerns are saving for retirement, managing paycheck-to-paycheck stress, and feeling secure in their jobs. That disconnect—especially around financial wellness—shows how easy it is to assume we're getting it right when we're not.
And the consequences are real. I've read customer feedback by people who suddenly are without income but still have a life to manage, saying, "If I didn't have disability insurance, I don't know how I would've bridged the gap." Those reminders of the real-world value of our products are humbling—and they push us to do better.
One moment that stuck with me happened during a benefits enrollment event for teachers in Trenton, N.J. The presenter failed to connect with the audience, had no materials prepared, and referenced examples that didn't resonate with the audience or reflect their real lives. Most attendees sat quietly on their phones, disengaged.
It hit me hard: This is the reality for many workers. We assume they have the tools, the time, and the context to make the right benefit choices. But often, they don't. If we want employees to engage with benefits, we must meet them where they are—with empathy, relevance, and support.
Benefits aren't a cost—they're one of the best tools leaders have to earn trust and keep great people. The companies that listen, cut through the clutter, and meet people where they are—those are the ones that will win.
As expectations shift, benefits will become a test of whether a company really understands and values its people. The next phase of workforce strategy won't be driven by perks, it'll be driven by purpose. And benefits will say a lot about where a company stands.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average also declined 108 points, or 0.3%. Last Friday, the three major averages closed mixed. The S&P 500 was little changed on Friday to close out a big winning month, inching down by 0.01% to end at 5,911.69. A top Senate Republican said Sunday that more spending cuts are needed to infuse 'fiscal sanity' into President Trump's proposed 'big, beautiful' budget bill. Florida Sen. Rick Scott, who serves on the Senate's Budget Committee, told WABC 770 AM radio's 'Cats Roundtable' that his fellow GOPers in the House did not do nearly enough to control spending or help rein in America's explosive debt when they passed the bill last month. Deficit concerns have prompted backlash from GOP fiscal hawk such as Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who have expressed opposition to the mega-bill in its current form because of its impact on the deficit. Other Republican critics, such as Sens. Timing can make a big difference when applying for Social Security benefits. While the application process is available year-round, certain days and times may lead to longer wait times, delayed processing and added frustration, especially if individuals need to speak with a representative. Mondays are often the busiest day of the week for the Social Security Administration (SSA). After the weekend, phone lines and field offices face a surge in inquiries, resulting in longer wait times and slower application processing. 'Monday is the worst day to apply,' said Seann Malloy, founder and managing partner at Malloy Law Offices. 'Call volumes on Mondays can be up to 30% higher than in the middle of the week, straining the agency's staff and slowing processing.' Colin Ruggiero, co-founder of which helps people with disabilities navigate government benefits, tracks SSA activity closely. According to Ruggiero, the agency handles over 500,000 phone calls each month. 'If you plan to contact the SSA on a Monday or Friday between 6 and 7 p.m., that's the worst time to call,' Ruggiero said. 'Many people wait until the end of the day to reach out, often due to other priorities, but this overwhelms representatives just as the day is winding down.' These days, there tends to be lighter traffic, meaning shorter wait times and quicker access to help if you need assistance with your application. 'The biggest issue is volume,' said Jake Falcon, CEO at Falcon Wealth Advisors. 'Whether you're calling, visiting an office or applying online, you're competing with a surge of other applicants. That can lead to system slowdowns, longer hold times and even errors if you're rushing through the process.' Falcon added, 'I've had clients get frustrated and abandon the process altogether, only to come back later and realize they missed something important.' That's why Falcon said he recommended that clients apply during midweek, specifically Tuesday through Thursday, in the mornings. 'SSA offices and systems are less overwhelmed, and staff are more available to help,' Falcon said. 'If you're applying online, aim for early in the day when traffic is lighter and you're less likely to hit a bottleneck.' Ruggiero said one of the main challenges applicants face is being on hold when calling the SSA. He said the average hold time could be as long as 2 hours and 15 minutes. 'Earlier in the day gives you the highest likelihood of waiting for a shorter period of time,' Ruggiero said. 'It appears that 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday is the least busy with the shortest wait times to get through to a representative, ranging from 21 minutes to 1 hour of wait time. So, if you are going to apply by phone, you should try to do it as early as possible in the day.' Applicants can speed up the process by applying online through the SSA's official website, which typically avoids the long wait times associated with phone or in-person visits. Having all required documents ready in advance, such as a birth certificate, Social Security number and income history also helps reduce delays and ensures a smoother application. Malloy advised Social Security applicants to double and triple check forms and use the SSA's checklist to 'avoid the notorious delays' reported by AARP.
