5 of the best Indian restaurants to try in Dundee

The Courier28-04-2025

Whether you're catching up with a friend or enjoying a meal out with the family, the Indian restaurants in Dundee offer fabulous quality and choice.
From the colourful curries to the mixture of spices and flavours that take you far beyond Dundee, Indian food has been a favourite cuisine of locals for many years.
Here, we list five of the best Indian restaurants to try if you are in Dundee – from buffet-style food to high-end a la carte menus.
Dil'se has been a popular venue for many years, with the name literally meaning 'from the heart'.
With a mixture of Bangladeshi and Indian food, the venue serves everything from mixed meat platters to chicken tikka masala and garlic naans.
After closing briefly in 2023, it has been taken over and the interior refurbished in 2024.
The quality remains high at this popular restaurant and they offer takeaway and sit-in meals with a family-friendly atmosphere.
Address: 99-101 Perth Road, Dundee, DD1 4JA
Promoted as a tandoori and balti restaurant, Jahangir is one of the top Indian restaurants in Dundee, with their name meaning 'king of the world'.
Famous for their charcoal tandoori offers, this award-winning restaurant serves mixed grills to tandoori seekh kebab, with vegetarian and meat curries also available.
After walking into a large and welcoming entrance area, their opulent interior boasts a fantastic sunken fish pond in the middle of the restaurant.
Jahangir also offer a European menu for those who want to enjoy the Jahangir experience without the spicy food, ensuring that everyone has something to enjoy.
Address: 1 Session Street, Dundee, DD1 5DN
Another venue which I personally enjoy is Rishi's Indian Aroma on Hawkhill, which is relatively new to the Indian food scene in the city but is well established now.
Rishi's serves a true taste of India, and it is apparent from their fresh mango lassi to the masala dosa with all the sauces and daal to indulge in.
The friendly and stylish restaurant also offers a lunch tapas menu, which is a lovely way to enjoy Indian food in the middle of the day.
You can also see into the kitchen from your table, which is always fun.
Address: 11 Hawkhill, Dundee, DD1 5DL
Home to the famous Dundee sweet and spicy hot sauce, Baba's sauce, Sunny's adds their own flavour twist to their dishes.
With samosas, curries and fresh-made pizzas, Sunny's caters to everyone and invites customers to try a mix of Bangladeshi and Indian dishes.
They have recently opened Wee Sunny's Takeaway in Douglas, after a fire in their previous location, and are still serving up some of the tastiest food in town.
The Sunny's team also offers external catering with karaoke and quiz cards – what more could you want?
Address: 13b Balmoral Terrace, Dundee, DD4 8SJ
If you live in Broughty Ferry and want to visit somewhere that's a bit closer to home, Goa is always on my list of places to recommend.
Goa makes Indian dining a more refined and luxurious experience with their a la carte menu and top-quality service.
They also have regular offers such as their pre-theatre deal, which was 3 courses for under £20.
Authentic flavours are the hero in any dish served by Goa with the use of fresh, local and seasonal ingredients in their dishes. And the interior is beautiful, as well as being very professionally run.
Address: 7 Erskine Lane, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, DD5 1DG

The five quiet, beautiful European islands that have avoided overtourism

Plenty of Europe's islands, be them famous Spanish party spots or lovely Italian islets, tend to get pretty crowded during the high season – but there's a handful across the continent that have managed to avoid overcrowding. Holiday booking platform BookRetreats has analysed data from the European Commission on overnight stays in tourist accommodation per square kilometre, and produced a list of the least crowded islands in Europe. Included in that list is Svalbard in Norway, which has a tourism density of just 2.4 per kilometre squared, making it the quietest European island by far. We reported recently that the country has just implemented a brand-new tourist tax, and the report cites Norway's strict regulations as one reason why Svalbard is so untouched: two-thirds of the archipelago is protected by nature reserves and national parks. Despite being Greece 's fifth-largest island and around the same size as Lanzarote, Chios has a tourism density of just 353.81 per square kilometre, and around 21,000 fewer overnight stays than its Canary Island counterpart. Why? Well, its economy relies not on tourism like plenty of Greece's other islands, but on local industry like the unique mastic (a natural resin) trade, and when travellers do pay the island a visit, it's to stay in guesthouses and little villages as opposed to mega-resorts. An all-private-room sleeper train connecting 100 European cities is launching soon

Ever been tempted by the prospect of a sleeper train, but felt a little put off by the thought of sharing with a stranger? Well, we've got some exciting news. Berlin -based night train start-up Nox has just announced its plans for a sprawling network of sleeper services all over Europe, which will exclusively offer private one or two-bed cabins. The company was founded by Thibault Constant, whose ' Simply Railway ' YouTube has gained a solid half a million-strong following and who has travelled on more than 400 night trains, and Janek Smalla, who led the operational launch of FlixTrain – a fairly appropriate pair, eh? Nox's goal is, according to Smalla, to make night trains 'an essential part of European travel' by offering a viable alternative to short-haul flights and becoming the go-to option for business travel. Designed to be a whole lot more comfortable than traditional couchettes, Nox's cabins will feature armchairs, tables, storage space, two-metre-long beds and (in some cases) panoramic windows. You'll either be able to book a single or a double cabin, and right now those are set to cost €79 or €149 respectively. According to RailTech, a financing round is planned for autumn this year and the start-up is finalising approval for its cabin designs. Below are some snaps of what these trains could look like. The plan is to launch first services by 2027, but by 2035 Nox aims to serve more than 100 European cities including Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome and Barcelona. Below is a render of their vision for the network. These are all the sleeper trains launching in 2025 that we can't wait to try out. Did you see that you'll soon be able to get a direct sleeper train between Scandinavia and Central Europe?

The otherworldly destination named Europe's best place for a road trip

Sure, hiking, cycling and hopping on a train are all brilliant ways to get out and see the world, but for those harder-to-reach destinations, travelling on four wheels is a pretty solid bet. Yep, we're talking about a good old-fashioned road trip. Google searches in the UK for European road trips have soared by 5,000 percent over the last 90 days, so Saga Car Insurance has analysed 73,000 Reddit comments to shed some light on the most popular ones. Topping their ranking is the Stokksnes Peninsula, an expansive landscape of black sand beaches, waterfalls, scenic mountains and Northern Lights hotspots in eastern Iceland. The F-roads around here are most accessible between July and September, when the weather is at its warmest and the days at their longest. In second place is Scotland 's NC500, an 830km stretch where you'll whisk past sights like Dunnet Head and the Applecross Peninsula, and in third place is the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, a country that was just crowned the best destination on the planet for road trip views by drivers.
