Despite PMC's repeated appeals, overhead cables in Pune continue to trouble citizens & deface city

Time of India20-05-2025

Pune: The civic body may have removed 2,500km of overhead cables in the city over the last six months, but the problem persists despite repeated warnings and appeals
Pune Municipal Corporation
(PMC) officials said they had lodged complaints against unknown cable operators and service providers for damaging civic property.
They said it was tough to identify owners of the overhead cables, which continue to deface civic areas, since no service provider takes responsibility for the wires.
Head of the civic electrical department Manisha Shekatkar said, "There is need to draft a policy. It will allow us to take stringent action against people responsible for using overhead wires."
On Saturday, a motorcyclist suffered a cut to his neck when a low-hanging cable caused an accident.
Civic officials said the administration was removing cables spread between 10km to 60km per week. The length can go up subject to availability of cranes, manpower and other equipment at ward-office levels. Though the problem caused by overhead cables persists on all key roads in the city, the gravity of the issue is felt more in areas like Wagholi, Sahakarnagar, Sinhagad Road and Baner Road.
PMC has made a schedule to cut the overhead cables and related drives are held on Saturdays.
PMC is also faced with the challenge to dispose of the snapped cables, which don't have much demand in the scrap market. Also, internet service providers and cellular companies don't come forward to claim the wires, reducing it all to waste. The civic administration has 30 truckloads of cables, which have been dumped at PMC's various ward offices.
Four years ago, the civic administration had given directives to companies using overhead cables to lay them underground.
However, most did not follow the instructions.
Meanwhile, citizens want PMC to take urgent action.
Prerna Goyal of Pashan said, "Though internet services are the need of the hour, it should not be at the cost of defacing the city. Service providers must opt for laying them through underground ducts."
"Risk of overhead cables increases during the rainy season and can cause accidents. Often, these cables get damaged because of trees falling, disrupting internet services," said Rucha Joshi of Satara Road.
Officials said PMC had carried out a survey of overhead cables in 2021. There was nearly 7,500km cable length across civic areas. Providers of cable TV, mobile and internet services had installed the cables.
At present, in areas where ducts are not available, PMC allows digging of roads to lay cables. The concerned firm has to pay road digging and restoration charges.
Many service providers told TOI that they do not convert their overhead cables to underground, since it is an expensive affair. PMC charges around Rs13,000 per km for road digging and restoration charges. Service firms are expected to pay 10% as an advance before starting to dig the roads.

Bengaluru stampede: Who gave permission for victory celebrations, ask victims' families

BENGALURU: Struggling to come to terms with the tragedy that has struck them, the families of the victims of the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium have one question: "Who gave permission for the entire victory celebrations that claimed our loved ones?" Ashwini UL, mother of one of the stampede victims, Divyanshi, asked: "My first question to the govt is who wanted this function? What was the need for arranging the felicitation function in front of Vidhana Soudha or announcing the roadshow and organising a victory celebration function in the stadium on June 4 when the entire city celebrated the victory overnight till the early hours? Why didn't the authorities make arrangements before inviting fans?" Not just Ashwini, the families of the 10 others who died in the stampede are searching for similar answers. Though chief minister Siddaramaiah has blamed police and maintained that nothing untoward happened during the felicitation attended by him in front of Vidhana Soudha, the families aren't convinced. "How can he say this? Isn't the stadium near Vidhana Soudha and didn't he know that fans will throng the stadium, barely 800 metres from Vidhana Soudha? How is it that no VIP or their children were caught in the stampede?" asked the family members that TOI spoke with. Ashwini said: "I was witness to the celebration throughout the night as I rode with my daughter up to MG Road. Despite lakhs of people hitting the streets on that night, there was no casualty on the roads. But it was only the next day, as my daughter was getting ready to leave for school, she saw the news about RCB's roadshow with players being carried in an open bus. I took her to the event as I didn't want to disappoint her. As we waited on the footpath at gate no. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오돌토돌 모공각화증, 긁지말고 '이것' 하세요 (해결후기) 현명한소비자 Undo 12 along with many others, there was an announcement directing people to gate no. 15 for free entry. Everybody rushed at once, resulting in the stampede." The resident of Kattigenahalli, near Yelahanka, also criticised the govt's move to stop the buck with the suspension of police officers. "If police had warned against organising celebrations hurriedly, why didn't anyone listen to them? Ministers too have children; they should understand the pain we're going through," she said, adding: "No matter how much compensation they give, it won't bring back my daughter. " 'Cash won't bring him back' Shravan KT, 20, a dental student at Dr BR Ambedkar College, was one of 11 who died. He wanted to join the armed forces, but his parents wanted him to become a doctor. Shravan and his friends managed to get tickets for attending the function at the stadium. Now the govt announced Rs 25 lakh compensation. "Even if they give Rs 25 crore, my brother will not come back," his sibling Shashidhar KT said. "Proper planning and management should have been in place. Not giving time to take security measures and organise the event well is the biggest mistake of the govt. They are blaming police, KSCA, and the IPL franchise. The function should've been held over the weekend," Shashidhar said. "I watched the statements from many political leaders comparing the incident to what happened at Prayagraj, the Tirupati incident, Pahalgam, and others. But they aren't ready to accept their mistake. While those incidents happened despite security measures, here in Bengaluru, there were hardly any measures put in place. It looks as if the govt wanted to take advantage of the celebrations," he said. Pavitra, mother of Prajwal, 22, an engineer from Yelahanka New Town who died in the incident, said, "We aren't worried about money (compensation). But who was behind the function? I don't know how true it is that police opposed the celebration. How is it that everyone knew about celebrations and why didn't the police act in the nick of time?" Bhoomik's father, Lakshman BT, Saturday told the media that his son was "murdered" by the govt. "He went to the stadium only because of the celebration, which was held in a hurry. All 11 families' curse will impact the ministers." Lakshman, unable to come to terms with his son's death, was found lying on his son's grave in his family farmland in Hassan district, crying in grief. He said, "I have earned crores for my son. But now he is no more. The govt is solely responsible for his death."

High-end cars, followers & a murder; Nolta, Pilani lived on fast lane

Panchkula: Sonu Nolta, the national Kabaddi player shot dead in a case of targeted killing and the accused shooter, Piyush Piplani, had a significant following among local youth. They were operating from the small town of Pinjore and were known for their flashy lifestyles. They often flaunted high-end cars and modified jeeps on social media. Their online presence was characterised by styled moustaches, gym-toned physiques, and a train of young followers. According to the police, both individuals were heavily influenced by notorious gangsters like Bhupi Rana and Lawrence Bishnoi, even modelling aspects of their lifestyles after them. Piyush, whose Instagram account tagline reads, "Badnam hai, Gumnam nhi," has around 17,000 followers. He has also been seen getting photographed with local politicians. His reels and posts featured him in different jeeps and cars, with a gang of young men in tow. His grandfather's brother used to be a sarpanch back in the day. Presently, he ran a footwear shop. His father had passed away. "Though he has criminal cases, I thought he had mended his ways. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo However, this brutal murder has come as a shock. I do not know what he was thinking," said a man who knows him closely. Nolta also had a large fan following, with over 6,000 followers on Instagram. He loved flaunting his tattoos, followers and personal vehicles. His pictures have messages of "RIP," "miss u bro," "legend never dies," and heart emojis, reflecting his following among youth. "Nolta comes from a Rajput family from the Raitan belt in Morni. He is a local lad who made good money in business, so he earned a good following among the younger generation there. He shifted to Tipra, where he was running a good outlet on the highway and staying alone in another location in Tipra. Sonu has a criminal past, but he never used to trouble innocent people," said the man known to him closely. A local known to them told TOI that they were not big gangsters or criminals. Fifteen to 20 men were close to them. They often had spats but no one expected a murder. Also, there is no solid reason for a murder. Earlier, they used to work together. A senior police officer told TOI, "It is a matter of concern even for us that despite being involved in various criminal activities, they have a big following among youths. So it is sensitive for a place like Pinjore." Angles being probed: Police are working on several theories, including personal rivalry, a business deal gone wrong, a conflicting love interest etc. Police sources said that Piplani was allegedly working for a local politician involved in mining, while the victim was also allegedly involved in mining. They said that this may have been a factor. Police said that the Nexon car recovered from outside PGI belonged to Ishan, who was a friend of Nolta, which has complicated the case further. Since the car has bloodstains, police assume that the shooter may have injured himself during the attack, which may also have been preceded by a fight. Meanwhile, shocked by the incident, local advocate Deepanshu Bansal has appealed to the police to ensure safety of residents. Sonu and his friend Prince were coming out of a mall after watching a film when unknown assailants fired at least 12 rounds. Six bullets hit Sonu. One of the bullets lodged in his spine. Prince also suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh, and is under treatment at PGI. Piplani took responsibility of the murder online. MSID:: 121708690 413 |

Man Arrested for Cruel Confinement of Cattle Near Noori Ground

Nagpur: Tehsil police arrested a 52-year-old man for confining cattle in inhumane conditions, allegedly in preparation for illegal slaughter. The incident took place near Noori Ground, Mominpura, on Sunday. Around 11.30am, while patrolling the area, Tehsil police received a tip-off about cattle being tied up cruelly in a densely populated locality. Acting swiftly, the team raided the spot in the presence of independent witnesses. They found five cattle tied in cramped, unsanitary conditions, without access to food or water. The accused, identified as Aslam Nabi Qureshi, a resident of Navin Wasti Teka, was taken into custody at the scene. The cattle, estimated to be worth approximately Rs48,000, were seized and handed over to a local cow protection organisation for care and rehabilitation. A formal complaint was filed by PSI BN Khan, and a case was registered under Sections 5, 5(b), 9, and 9(a) of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976 (as amended in 1995), along with Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Authorities confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine whether others were involved and if this is part of a larger illegal slaughter operation.
