The Observer view on the Oscars: a night of toe-curling embarassment awaits
There is a common complaint among film buffs that cinema, dominated by superhero fantasies and blockbuster franchises, isn't what it used to be. They look back misty-eyed to the 1940s heyday of the studio system or to the 1970s rise of the counterculture auteurs as celluloid golden ages that are destined never to be repeated.
It is, then, a rebuke to the naysayers that the 97th Academy Awards boasts a full array of compelling genres: steamy melodrama, political conspiracy thriller, science-fiction action and disaster epic.
The only problem is that these descriptions refer not to the competing films but to the ceremony itself, which promises to rival the memorable controversies previously enacted by a profession whose deepest fear is losing the attention of the public.
The Native American activist Sacheen Littlefeather's 1973 speech after collecting Marlon Brando's Oscar for The Godfather, and Will Smith's slapping of host Chris Rock three years ago are enshrined in history as triumphs of disorder over stage management. The signs are that the event on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood may produce scene-stealing of a similar lasting nature.
There's enough going on in the best actress category alone to suggest that it would be a major disappointment if the competition passed without embarrassing incident.
Consider Karla Sofía Gascón, who was well placed to exploit the sentimental and novelty votes as the first out trans woman to be nominated in the category for her role in Emilia Pérez.
That was until old social media comments emerged in which she derided the prominence of ethnic minority actors at the 2021 Oscars. She was duly dropped from the film's promotion, leaving her about as likely to make the podium as Smith is to be placed in charge of security.
Not that her fellow nominee Fernanda Torres will be packing her winner's speech with any more confidence. The star of I'm Still Here had to issue a self-excoriating mea culpa when a 17-year-old clip from a Brazilian comedy show in which she wore blackface just happened to surface during the awards season.
And before Mikey Madison, star of Anora, rushes the stage to bag the vacant award, it should be recalled that she was the subject of another rumpus after admitting that she didn't use an intimacy coach in her sex scenes with co-star Mark Eydelshteyn.
Throw in the stink around the best film nominee The Brutalist for its use of AI on best actor nominee Adrien Brody's Hungarian accent, and that many feel that a celebration of overpaid actors is not what Los Angeles should be hosting in the wake of its devastating fires, and there are the necessary preconditions for a long night of toe-curling viewing.

All of which adds up to an ideal way to mark this juncture in our history. For Hollywood's highest calling is its role as the world's dream factory.
If the films it produces fail to capture the imagination, then it should at least provide by way of distraction from a collapsing world order an evening of exquisite discomfort.
When military spending goes up and global aid goes down, it's time to focus on the important things in life: ancient tweets, bad comedy clips and the bedside choreography of a promising young actress.
Yes, there are wars and tariffs and existential threats aplenty. But this is an occasion to dispense with earthly worries and to cherish the performances of the lavishly entitled dressed up in freebie designer costumes and emoting virtuous sensitivity to the watching world. Hooray for Hollywood!

Stream Sydney Sweeney's 'gripping' new thriller for free
Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore front the new Apple TV+ thriller from producer Ridley Scott Sydney Sweeney stars in a new film packed with A-list talent that's available to stream completely free. The Euphoria actress stars alongside Oscar-winner Julianne Moore in Echo Valley, an 'edge-of-your-seat thriller' billed as a 'tale of love, sacrifice and survival'. The official synopsis reads: 'Kate (Moore) is a mother struggling to make peace with her troubled daughter Claire (Sweeney) – a situation that becomes even more perilous when Claire shows up on Kate's doorstep, hysterical and covered in someone else's blood. As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child.' Alongside its two leads, the film also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Kyle MacLachlan and Edmund Donovan. Echo Valley is streaming now exclusively on Apple TV+ and can be watched for free with Apple's seven-day free trial. It comes from BAFTA-winning director Michael Pearce and Emmy Award-nominated writer Brad Ingelsby, creator of Mare of Easttown. Legendary Alien and Gladiator director Sir Ridley Scott serves as the film's producer. It comes as Disney+ tempts Brits with the return of its £1.99 streaming deal, offering 60% off a monthly subscription for four months. For those sticking with Apple TV+, early reactions for Echo Valley have been somewhat mixed, but according to The Telegraph 's four-star review, it may just be the 'plot-twist thriller of the year'. The Hollywood Reporter hailed it as 'satisfyingly tense', saying: 'Echo Valley takes some genuinely gripping turns as well as a few unbelievable detours in its journey through Kate's increasingly complicated life and relationship with her daughter. "Even as the web gets sticky, Pearce maintains control of each thread with his steady direction.' In its two-star review, The Guardian said: 'After an intriguing opening, the convoluted narrative doesn't merely jump the shark but lies down and lets the shark jump over it before the pair of them charleston their way across the rolling Pennsylvanian farmland where the film is supposed to be set.' Article continues below A warmer reaction came from Variety, which said: 'When you're simply looking for something semi-interesting to stream, stories like these don't necessarily require great actors, but great actors are the reason some of them still reverberate in our memory decades later.'

Sean Connery turned down role he said was 'disgusting' which other actor won Oscar for
Sean Connery turned down a number of iconic roles during his career, including one which won the actor who took on the role an Oscar, as he found it 'disgusting' The iconic actor and silver screen legend Sean Connery once rejected a part that might have landed him a Best Actor Oscar, finding it "disgusting". Connery, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 90, left behind an astonishing array of work, not least his portrayal of James Bond and an Oscar-winning role in The Untouchables. Even so, among the various offers he declined were parts that went on to become some of the greatest roles in film history, including one particular character who featured in a film which won five Oscars. Despite turning down the proposition due to its "disgusting" source material, there's a consensus among fans that this was the right decision by the 'Goldfinger' actor. The concern amongst devotees of the Bond legend was that Connery would have reshaped the character too much in his own image instead of adhering to the required tone of a thriller. According to a post on the r/TodayILearned subreddit: "Of the various roles Sean Connery turned down, they included Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, John Hammond in Jurassic Park, Morpheus in The Matrix, Dumbledore in Harry Potter, and Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. Of the Hannibal part in particular, Connery felt it was too 'disgusting'." Jonathan Demme, the director of The Silence of the Lambs, confirmed that there was a considerable effort exerted to secure Connery for the film, but he ultimately rejected the offer. Demme recalled: "Sean Connery was the only other person I thought could be amazing for this. Connery has that fierce intelligence and also that serious physicality. I love Tony Hopkins, but Sean Connery could be amazing. "Word came back shortly that he thought it was disgusting and wouldn't dream of playing the part. So, great, now we can go to Tony Hopkins." Movie buffs were relieved Connery snubbed the part as there was speculation about how he would interpret the role of the nefarious cannibal, Hannibal Lecter. Anthony Hopkins, who embraced the character in three films, earned an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in 'Silence of the Lambs' in 1994. One social media user wrote: "What's funny is that while may have passed on them, the actors who took them made them into iconic performances." Another added: "There are two types of actors: those who transform into their characters, and those who transform the characters into themselves. "Connery is the latter. He didn't transform into James Bond, Ramierz from Highlander, or the submarine commander from The Hunt for Red October; he was just Sean Connery in each of those roles. All those roles he turned down would've just been Sean Connery." A third shared: "That's my takeaway every time this comes up. He passed on some iconic roles, but they probably wouldn't have become iconic in the first place had he NOT passed on them. "I try and imagine him in those roles and it just doesn't fit. Sean Connery had star power but he's not the kind of actor who can do anything and become anyone, and that's fine."
