‘Can't believe it': NRL great's incredible rant over Broncos rumour

Greg Alexander has torn the Broncos to shreds as rumours continue to swirl over player unrest under taskmaster coach Michael Maguire. A miserable loss to Manly on Saturday has left the club's 2025 campaign on the brink of disaster — and rumblings continue to suggest there are serious problems within the team's dressing room. The loss to the Sea Eagles was compounded by the news Payne Haas' management is shopping the superstar prop around to all NRL clubs, with the possibility the 25-year-old could leave when his contract runs out at the end of 2026. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. While pressure is building on Maguire, the blowtorch is now being turned on the playing group with a number of commentators calling out the lack of effort senior players have produced recently. Former Dally M medal winner Greg Alexander has now given the most stinging criticism yet, calling players 'wusses' over rumours they didn't like Maguire's demanding leadership style. You can watch Alexander's rant in the video player above. 'Brisbane were that bad. And they have been,' Alexander said on his SEN Sydney breakfast radio show with co-host Andrew Voss. 'They've won one game in their last seven A number of those have been at Suncorp Stadium too. It's far from a fortress.' Alexander said it was clear from the loss to the Sea Eagles the club has problems. 'When you look at the first five minutes of that game at Brookvale Oval, in the first set – the first set – Lehi Hopoate bursts through Payne Haas and Kobe Hetherington through the middle,' he said. 'Manly go within a whisker of scoring in the first set. In hindsight now you go back and you go, 'Well that's how the game continued'. Brisbane have got some problems.' He said players unhappy about Maguire's taxing methods do not deserve to be playing football at NRL level. 'Please don't let me think that the Brisbane players are whingeing because Michael Maguire is too hard on them,' he said. Using a mock crying motion with his hands rubbing against his eyes, Alexander said: 'Cry me a river. You little wusses. 'If that is true, none of them deserve to be playing NRL. Really. Tell me that's not true. I can't believe that's true because I can't believe senior NRL players would be bitching and whingeing because Michael Maguire keeps them there (at training) too long.' The Broncos are still without Ben Hunt and Reece Walsh due to injuries, but the team is running our of excuses. With six losses from their last seven games, the Broncos sit 11th on the ladder and risk letting the season get away from them if they don't get wins on the board soon. Melbourne Storm premiership winner Ryan Hoffman, who played under Maguire at Wigan, said Brisbane's players had to take responsibility for their poor run of results. 'The Broncos weren't too much of an opposition, to be quite honest,' Hoffman said on ABC's Offsiders. 'They've been extremely disappointing. They showed a lot of promise at the start of the year with their new coach in Michael Maguire taking a harder-nosed stance than his predecessor Kevin Walters. 'He was criticised a bit for not being tough enough to the players. Now Michael Maguire's been accused of being too tough. 'I don't think it's a coaching issue at Brisbane, to be quite honest. I think play to understand that it's a hard game and they need to harden themselves up because that was a really lacklustre performance from the Broncos last night. 'The rest of the NRL expects the Broncos to be up the top. 'I've been coached by Michael Maguire before. I know that he is a successful coach. But you need to buy into what he's about. 'He's going to breed a tough football team, but you've got to train tough to be tough. 'Look, I'm going to back Michael Maguire in. I think he's a very good coach. I think he's what Brisbane Broncos need. 'I think the players themselves need to understand that 'this is what we need right now, we need to buy into what he's about'.' Maguire's coaching style has come into question this season and after Saturday's loss, he was prickly when asked about Brisbane's struggles in attack. 'Do you feel like the spark has gone out of the Broncos attack a bit in recent months?' a journalist asked in the post-game press conference. 'What do you mean by that?' Maguire shot back, before adding his side needs to be 'smarter' with the ball. 'There are probably times where we're pushing a pass here and there and that's what creates pressure back on ourselves,' Maguire said. 'So that's something that we're talking about and just need to be better at it. 'The boys are putting in plenty of effort, we just need to focus on the areas of our game that builds pressure on teams. That's the game. 'I've got to grow the team to be able to build pressure. We showed signs but we just have to do it longer, that's what the teams further up the ladder are doing. When the opportunities come you've got to make sure you're in position to take them. We need to be a bit smarter in that area and it's something we need to improve on.'

Bunbury gears up for ‘big weekender' of football and festivities

In the lead-up to Bunbury's first ever AFL premiership game, the city is gearing up for a weekend full of activities and events after months of anticipation. On Sunday June 8, North Melbourne will play the West Coast Eagles in a historic match at Hands Memorial Oval — the first time a venue in WA outside the metropolitan area will stage a game for premiership points. Bunbury mayor Jaysen Miguel said it was a 'huge moment' for the region, which would see locals and travellers out in force over the weekend. 'There's already a real buzz around the city and I know we're ready to put on a show,' he said. 'I'm excited for the Bunbury Big Weekender to bring people together — footy fans, families and visitors alike — and to celebrate our beautiful city. 'I encourage everyone to get involved, come down to the events and show the rest of the country what Bunbury's all about.' Here's how you can ride the wave of AFL mania right up until match day. THURSDAY JUNE 5 FOOTY PANEL TRACKSIDE LUNCH, BUNBURY TURF CLUB, 12pm-5.30pm Between 12pm and 5.30pm the Bunbury Turf Club is hosting the Footy Panel Trackside Lunch, with appearances from sports commentator Tim Gossage and former Eagles players Andrew Embley and Ross Glendinning. FRIDAY JUNE 6 HARVEY-BRUNSWICK-LESCHENAULT FC CLUB ROOMS, 3pm-6pm In a collaboration between North Melbourne and Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault Football Club, community members are invited to participate in a hands-on painting activity at the local club rooms. SATURDAY JUNE 7 CAPTAINS' RUN Spectators will have free entry into Hands Oval to watch the AFL clubs' open training sessions. North Melbourne's captain's run will be held from 9am-11am before West Coast's between 1pm and 2.30pm. SUNDAY JUNE 8 THE BATTLE FOR BUNBURY, FROM 9am Bicentennial Square will come alive for pre-game excitement, with food trucks, coffee vans, a big screen and a host of family friendly activities. AFL: Collingwood forward Beau McCreery on growth, form and midfield time

It's starting to click for Collingwood pressure machine Beau McCreery. The premiership forward is in a patch of brilliant form and one of the unheralded weapons keeping the Magpies two points clear on top of the AFL ladder. McCreery says his elevation is off the back of gaining a greater understanding of his own game and his role is more complex than hitting the scoreboard. 'It's my fifth year and I've only started to figure out I don't need to kick goals to be happy with how I go,' McCreery told NewsWire. 'It doesn't have anything to do with me kicking any goals, it's just putting that pressure on. I feel like when I am at my best my pressure is there. 'People get nervous when us boys are hunting, especially us small forwards. 'If you've got me, Bobby (Hill), Shooter (Lachie Schultz), Jamie (Elliott) chasing, even Timmy (Membrey), Checkers (Brody Mihocek) – people get nervous.' McCreery is modest in his self-assessment, grading his first half of the year as 'up and down'. But the 24-year-old is recording greater numbers in almost every statistic important to a player in his position. McCreery's clearance numbers are included in that growth, which bodes well in his pursuit of becoming a more regular option in the middle for coach Craig McRae. 'When I get that midfield time I feel like I've been beasting in there,' he said. 'If I can keep getting some of that time in the mid, keep exposing myself to mid time, but I still do love playing forward. 'I love the craft of it, I love my group I am down there with, it's so enjoyable – playing for this team is just so enjoyable.' McCreery pinch hit in the middle during Friday night's dismantling of Hawthorn at the MCG. The 88-gamer is learning how challenging a transition up the ground will be but knows what he needs to do to earn more opportunity. 'Keep showing up, keep training well and when they do give me an opportunity … I figured out pretty quickly it's pretty tough in there,' he said. 'I need to take my chances when I go in there … use my speed, catch people off guard. I don't think people think I can close down space as quick as I can.' Collingwood has Melbourne in the annual King's Birthday clash before its mid-season bye. Originally published as AFL 2025: Collingwood's Beau McCreery on his form and evolution as a pressure forward
