U Mumba wins maiden Ultimate Table Tennis title after beating Jaipur Patriots in UTT 2025 final
P.B. Abhinandh, emulating Carlos Alcaraz from last week's French Open final, fell flat on his back as Jeet Chandra's crosscourt forehand clipped the net and went out to seal U Mumba's first-ever Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) league title in front of a near-capacity crowd at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad on Sunday. With the Mumbai-based franchise leading Jaipur Patriots 7-2 after mixed doubles, the 17-year-old from Chennai had to win just one game against Chandra in the first reverse singles. The situation was in total contrast to his team's semifinal against Dempo Goa Challengers where he had to earn at least one point. But like he did against the Challengers, Abhinandh captured the third game after being outplayed for most part in the first two against Chandra, eight years his senior. And this time, no houdini act was required from Yashaswini Ghorpade. The platform for Mumba's win was set by captain Bernadette Szocs. World No. 12 Szocs, who ended Zeng Jian's unbeaten streak in the final-four tie, also brought Sreeja Akula's undefeated run to a halt. The Romanian produced a serving masterclass, troubling Sreeja with her numerous variations in the tomahawk serve. At 10-9 in the opener, Szocs surprised the Indian with the long pendulum serve down the line and caught her completely off guard. The platform for Mumba's win was set by captain Bernadette Szocs. Sreeja!' cheers on Golden Point brought the tomahawk serve out again but the Indian made the return and the Mumba skipper netted the third ball with her forehand. Sreeja, who won five of her six matches in the tournament with a 2-1 scoreline, would have believed in herself to replicate the same once again. But it wasn't her day as her forehand kept misfiring in the decider. Szocs deserved credit for that as well as she came up with at least two clutch forehand retrieves from way behind the table to keep the rallies going. A warmed-up Szocs then combined with Akash Pal to blank Chandra and Dutchwoman Britt Eerland in a one-sided mixed doubles. The Patriots had started on a positive note with skipper Kanak Jha bagging the first game 11-4 against Lilian Bardet. But the Frenchman, also known as ' managed to unleash his strong forehand shots during the second game and from thereon, it was a totally different contest. Champion U Mumba received INR 60 lakh, runner-up Patriots got INR 40 lakh while the two losing semifinalists - Dabang Delhi TTC and the Challengers - each was awarded INR 17.5 lakh in prize money. RESULT Final: U Mumba 8-4 Jaipur Patriots Lilian Bardet bt. Kanak Jha 2-1 (4-11, 11-5, 11-7) Bernadette Szocs bt. Sreeja Akula 2-1 (11-9, 10-11, 11-5) Akash Pal/Bernadette Szocs bt. Jeet Chandra/Britt Eerland 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-5) P.B. Abhinandh lost 1-2 (5-11, 8-11, 11-8) to Jeet Chandra

It happens. I don't know how it will look in the future. 'I think that it is not the most important thing, but I nevertheless try to forget the negative things and see what I can do here' in Halle. 'I think that for me to play another tournament is positive, because every match is a new beginning, and I must be mentally ready to give my all on the court. Therefore, it is great I can be here in Halle. Yes, I had already a few sleepless nights, but I think every day it gets better.' Read More | Exclusive | Alcaraz already an all-surface great, will win quite a few Australian Open titles too The 23-year-old Italian is the reigning champion at Halle and will seek to defend his crown at the tournament, which starts on Monday, as he gears up for Wimbledon, which will be held from June 30 to July 13 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. 'The first practice session was OK. I hadn't played since Paris, so my general feelings on the court were not so perfect,' Sinner said. 'I think a good grass-court player can move well. The ball can bounce a bit funny because of the grass, and you have to serve intelligently. In the fourth set of the match, the Italian had three championship points, but he faltered and Alcaraz recovered to win the gruelling contest. Alcaraz won the match 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(10-2) after five hours and 29 minutes — the longest men's final in Roland Garros history. 3 match points down, Alcaraz locked in and won the next 5 points. My family stands behind me, and my friends. That is the most important thing for me. Tennis is important in my life, but nonetheless, family and friends are more important. I still think often about the match,' Sinner said in his pre-tournament press conference at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. 'It happens. I don't know how it will look in the future. I think it is not the most important thing, but I still try to forget the negative aspects and see what I can do here [in Halle]." Sinner also said that playing table tennis has helped him keep his mind off the defeat. 'I spent a few days with friends and family having fun doing simple things, like playing ping pong. I can focus on the missed match points or on a match where I was mentally on the ball for five and a half hours.'
