A husband, accused of murdering his wife after a body was found in their back garden, has appeared in court.
Alireza Askari, 41, is accused of murdering Paria Veisi, 37, whose body was later found at a property in the Penylan area of Cardiff.
Askari is also accused of preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body and assaulting a person occasioning them actual bodily harm.
He appeared at Cardiff Crown Court alongside Maryam Delavary, 48, from White City Estate in west London.
She is accused of preventing the lawful and decent burial of a body and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
Glamorous company director Paria Veisi - described as having 'many smiles' - vanished just over a week ago after leaving her office.
Her £40,000 Mercedes was later found in a luxury street of large houses but with no sign of Paria.
Her body was later found by police after making two arrests. Officers have set up tents to search a suburban garden in Penylan, Cardiff.
The pair, both wearing grey tracksuits, were joined in the dock by an interpreter and spoke only to confirm their names and addresses.
The court heard a psychiatric report had been issued into Askari's mental health and the pair will return for a further hearing in May.
Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, fixed a four-week trial beginning on October 6.
Police say Paria left her work in Cathays, Cardiff, at 3pm on Saturday.
Her black Mercedes GLC 220 was found a mile away in the street of large Edwardian houses in Dorchester Avenue, Penylan, in the Welsh capital.
Police forensic teams were later spotted setting up large white tents on a neighbouring road.
Speaking after the charges were issued, Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Matt Powell, said: 'This brings our search for Paria to a sad and tragic end. Paria's family, all those who knew her, and those in her local community, will be deeply saddened and shocked by these latest developments. Family liaison officers are continuing to support Paria's family'.
'I would like to thank all those who have come forward so far with information since our appeal was launched.'
'There will continue to be detectives and crime scene investigators working in the Penylan area over the next week, and I would encourage anyone with any information to talk to officers at the scene or to get in touch.'
An alert was sparked after Paria's disappearance was described as 'totally out of character'. She was described as having long, curly, black hair.
The 37-year-old was last seen wearing a black zip-up gym top over a red top, black trousers, and trainers.
A memorial service to Paria is set to take place at Cardiff Bay's iconic Norwegian Church tomorrow night.
A notice inviting people to the service reads: 'With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we invite you to a memorial gathering in honour of the kindness, selflessness, and the many smiles Paria Veisi shared throughout her life.
'Her memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. We warmly welcome you to join us in remembering and celebrating Paria's life.

CCTV captures terrifying moment hired thug with sawn-off shotgun opens fire at homes

Astonishing video footage has emerged showing a hitman discharging a firearm at residences amidst a fierce gangland dispute. Kieran Morgan, 30, was filmed brandishing a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun and firing it in broad daylight, as well as during the early hours in another horrifying assault. In a third incident, he discharged a shotgun in a bustling takeaway, all within a matter of weeks. The orchestrator of these attacks was Zaki Shazad, 22, who was acting on behalf of unidentified higher-ranking figures in the underworld, Minshull Street Crown Court was informed. The judge remarked that the shootings bore 'all the hallmarks of a dispute between serious organised criminals'. Remarkably, no one was injured in any of the incidents, which took place in March and April 2023. Morgan has now been handed an 18-year prison sentence, while Shazad has been sentenced to 16 years behind bars, reports the Manchester Evening News. The initial shooting occurred on March 12 on Doric Avenue in Heald Green, Stockport. Morgan, accompanied by another man and clad in a mask and dark attire, approached a house and fired a shotgun at it. He then lobbed a homemade explosive device towards the property, but it rebounded off a wall. Morgan retrieved it and threw it again at a higher angle, causing it to detonate like a firework. Greater Manchester Police later confirmed through forensic testing that the device contained hydrochloric acid. Morgan subsequently made his escape from the scene in a Mercedes. The second shooting occurred in broad daylight on Wilmslow Road in Heald Green on April 21, as a family, including a child, were preparing their car for Eid festivities. Morgan arrived at the scene in the afternoon carrying a hold-all bag that contained the shotgun. Donning a face mask, he fired shots towards the property. Although no one was injured, the house sustained damage. The third incident unfolded at the Drip burger bar on Kingsway nine days later, on April 30. Morgan entered the restaurant and immediately discharged one shot, followed by another shortly after. One bullet struck a wall next to a TV, and the other hit the counter. Staff members were behind the counter at the time, and customers were present in the front of the restaurant. Prosecutor David Farley stated that those inside were 'clearly and understandably terrified'. Morgan made his escape on a bicycle. Shazad was identified as the 'organiser' of the shootings. Snapchat messages exchanged between the pair revealed that Morgan was to receive £1,000 from Shazad for the 'jobs'. Shazad, of Ranford Road, Levenshulme, was convicted of conspiring to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life. Morgan, of Petworth Avenue, Chadderton, admitted to the same offence. Police announced that the three shootings were connected following receipt of intelligence. They scrutinised CCTV footage which aided in identifying Morgan, who was spotted wearing a Canada Goose jacket. He subsequently posted a photo of himself on social media donning the same jacket. His face was also captured on CCTV footage after he removed his balaclava. Additionally, Shazad received a sentence for attempting to smuggle cannabis to a relative in HMP Berwyn, North Wales. He pleaded guilty to conveying a List A item into prison and possessing cannabis. Defending Morgan, Keith Harrison stated that the defendant has struggled with "recurring mental health problems". David Bentley, representing Shazad, claimed that his client was involved in assisting Morgan but was not the mastermind. Following the hearing, Detective Inspector Lee Newburn of GMP commented: "Violence, particularly this kind of revenge violence, will not be tolerated on the streets of Manchester. We have seen two dangerous individuals locked up for their parts in a number of firearms discharges targeting properties where innocent people were present. "It is miraculous that no-one was seriously injured during these firearms discharges, but they could very easily have been. One of the victims of these shootings has described to me how scared she now is to go out in public and just how shaken she is about what happened. Nobody should be made to feel like this. "We continue to work very closely with the communities in and around Greater Manchester to ensure that we protect them from this kind of violence, and we are grateful for the intelligence that we receive from them in relation to illegal activity on a daily basis. "We also work closely with the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), which is a multi-agency team we are part of, and we seek to prevent violence from occurring by addressing underlying issues and educating those who may be at risk of re-offending. "We do this by providing valuable input in prevention work that our partners are carrying out on an ongoing basis, working behind the scenes to manage serious incidents before they occur. That is why we are asking, if you know anyone who is using, or possesses, an illegal firearm, we urge you to get in touch with us as, for each firearm we recover, that's potentially a life saved."

Protein review – gym-obsessed serial killer bites off more than he can chew
'It's basic detective work,' says veteran smalltown cop Stanton (Charles Dale), trying to justify pressurising a lead about her love life. 'Very fucking basic,' says Patch (Andrea Hall), a London colleague who has come to the sticks because of a possible connection with a grisly serial killer. That's the narky style of this ramshackle but moreish Welsh thriller, which takes place in the coke-sniffing milieu of endemic poverty and petty criminality, under ubiquitous sallow street lighting, in which everyone's looking for an out. Patch is right about the serial killer: drifter Sion (Craig Russell) has pitched up in town and blags a cleaning job at a local gym. A traumatised ex-squaddie with an inferiority complex, he takes offence at the group of hoodlums lording it over the machines. So he hammers in the skull of bouncer Dwayne (Kai Owen) and stores some choice morsels in a freezer; an extra protein source for his iron-pumping. But Sion is oblivious to Dwayne having recently cut in on a drug deal with rival Albanian gangsters – so his seemingly brutal murder threatens to kick off a turf war. The title suggests some kind of exposé or The Substance-style satire on modern gym-culture toxicity. And with the meatshake-quaffing Sion, and an ambient whiff of stale testosterone among most of the cast, it is to some extent. But the protagonist – for whom we're ladled out a facile backstory but who is also off the screen much of the time – is too marooned within the film to fully bring that aspect home. More nutritious are the ratty comic exchanges at which debut director Tony Burke excels, like a cokehead Mike Leigh. From five guys arguing about guns in a Yaris, to Stanton and Patch expeditiously shaking down suspects, the repartee not only effectively conveys the diminished expectations in this seedy bearpit, but also squeezes out unexpected vulnerability for the actors to capitalise on. The standouts are Dale, as the ironclad stalwart hiding tragedy, Hall with her personable cynicism, and Steve Meo as the would-be playas' whipping boy, spiralling out into uproarious panic. Too diffuse and unfocused it may be, but Protein has a hotline into great British bathos. Protein is released in UK cinemas from 13 June, and available on digital platforms from 14 July.
