SPF myths and the science behind UV radiation: How to care for your skin as temperatures rise

As temperatures rise across the UAE, with the country experiencing a record 51.6°C – the highest temperature in the month of May – skincare should be top of mind, experts say.
But beware of marketing gimmicks and misleading claims.
"The phrase 'high SPF' sounds ­reassuring, it's true, but the sense of security you feel is false," German skincare expert Dr Barbara Sturm says. "SPF is a misleading and therefore dangerous term; a product with this factor only refers to protection against UVB rays, which is not quite enough."
The science behind UV radiation
The sun transmits ultraviolet radiation in three wavelengths – the creatively dubbed UVA, UVB and UVC rays. The latter does not penetrate our planet's ­atmosphere, so it's irrelevant to the case being put forth here.
UVB is most responsible for sunburn which, by extension, causes malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma (what Hugh Jackman suffered from), while UVA is associated with skin ageing. However, because not everyone is aware of UVA's role, and not all sunscreens have the wherewithal to help shield us from it, prolonged exposure not only leads to wrinkles, pigmentation and coarse skin, but can also cause skin cancer.
What Sturm and other experts now know is that a product with solar ­protection factor (SPF) has no impact whatsoever in protecting our skin from UVA rays.
That's not to say that you should ditch that SPF 30 ­offering completely; rather, as with most other things these days, you need to read the small print when buying your next sunscreen. And it's not only for those who are constantly out and about, either.
'UVA can penetrate glass, so it can get you in a windowed office or while you're ­driving,' explains Sturm. 'It is imperative to use a sunscreen technology that offers 'broad-­spectrum' protection.'
A broad-spectrum solution targets both UVA and UVB rays. The latter can be monitored based on the SPF count – between 30 and 50 is recommended depending on your lifestyle – think commuting to the office versus spending time at the beach. The former is trickier, and requires a bit of calculation. Step one is to look out for the UVA star rating on a product's packaging; stars range from 0 to 5. This number indicates the percentage of UVA radiation absorbed by the sunscreen in comparison to UVB.
"In other words, this is the ratio between the level of protection afforded by the UVA protection and the UVB protection," states a report released by the British Association of Dermatologists.
"Be aware that if you choose a low SPF, it may still have a high level of stars, not because it is providing a lot of UVA protection, but because the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is about the same. That's why it's important to choose a high SPF as well as a high number of stars."
In simpler terms, a sunscreen with SPF 30 and a UVA rating of four stars should fit the bill. Unless you spend your daylight hours out in the desert or at the beach. In that case, not only should you invest in SPF 50 and five stars, but also be very conscientious about application and reapplication.
Application tips
The recommended amount of sunscreen works out to about two milligrams per square centimetre of your skin's surface. For optimum protection to the face, the amount needed would cover the palm of your hand.
"Most people are quite good at slathering products on their faces, but tend to miss the neck and ear area, which then become prone to carcinogenic nodules," says dermatologist Anita Hiranandani. "And even if you're wearing a pair of shorts or a top with sleeves, it's best to use sunscreen all over the body, not just on the exposed bits."
Apply the product 20 minutes before you step out, so it has adequate time to create a barrier shield, and reapply every two hours if you're under the sun for that long.
"If you are outside a lot, it is critical, especially in a strong-sun location like the UAE, to reapply a broad-spectrum sunscreen regularly, particularly after sweating or swimming," says Sturm.
'Even certain fabrics can diminish the impact the cream has on the skin. It also depends on what time of the day you are outside – the sun is 150 times stronger at noon than in the morning or evening,' she adds.
She's not a fan of moisturisers or make-up that claim to double up as sunscreen. 'Active UV filters and active skincare ingredients sitting in a product together degrade the effectiveness of both. I would always use sunscreen separately. It is safer to apply the skincare first, wait a few minutes for absorption, and then apply make-up. This way you have the full protective effect, without the mineral oils of the cosmetics to clog your pores, and you don't smudge your make-up,' she explains.
Even the most effective sunscreen, however, is unlikely to offer full protection under the direct glare of the sun. It needs to be complemented by clothing, sunglasses, caps and umbrellas. Dr Lanalle Dunn, founder of Jumeirah's Chiron Clinic, suggests rash-guard apparel, which blocks UV rays. She adds: "Stay away from chemically laden sunscreens – those that include parabens, oxybenzone, octinoxate and titanium dioxide."
Sunscreen pollution
Sunscreen pollution is another reason to avoid strong chemicals. Many activists are now pushing to ban products made up of marine-life-harming oxybenzone and octinoxate. According to Lisa Bishop, president of the Friends of Hanauma Bay organisation: "When people put these two chemicals on and they come into the ocean, the product washes off and stays floating in the water, and the corals are being killed by it."
Some eco-friendly brands that come highly recommended include Colorescience, NYDG Skincare, La Roche-Posay, Dr Hauschka and Molecular Cosmetics, which carries photostable Sun Drops.
To tan or not to tan
Both types of UV radiation contribute to skin tanning, a condition actively and, research would suggest, insensibly sought out by hordes of people. A tan by any other name is damaged skin, according to the report by the British Association of Dermatologists. The skin is made up of a pigment called melanin, which gives our skin its natural colour.
Exposure to sunlight causes an increase in the production of melanin that absorbs more UV radiation, causing the skin to become darker, usually temporarily. 'A tan is actually a sign that the skin has been damaged and is trying to protect itself,' ­suggests the report.
'This is not to say that one should avoid the sun completely,' cautions Dunn. '­Research shows that non- smokers who avoided the sun had a life ­expectancy similar to smokers in the highest sun exposure group, indicating that avoidance is a risk factor for death of a similar magnitude as smoking. The cardio­protective benefits of sun exposure are partly due to nitric oxide, which aids in lowering blood pressure. Nitric oxide is only released into the bloodstream with direct sunlight exposure and not with simply taking Vitamin D supplementation.'
Tanned or otherwise ­damaged skin can be treated by getting skin ­treatments such as hydrating facials, radiofrequency to tighten the skin, ­photodynamic therapy and fractional laser treatments. However, these should be looked upon as more prevention than cure. When it comes to avoiding sun damage, a daily threat, your first port of call should be an effective ­sunscreen – one that's about more than just SPF; it's a ­product that needs research and responsible usage. After all, if Wolverine had to battle cancer six times, there's no guarantee that any of us is immune to it.

Chanchal completed her bachelor's degree in finance accounting and management at the University of Nottingham, in the UK. Chandini went to the London College of Fashion, where she obtained her bachelor's degree in fashion design and development. But writing was her passion, so she joined Dubai Week as a journalist and also worked with insydo Dubai. After spending five to six years in the industry, she felt burnt out and decided to become an entrepreneur. The sisters started selling yoga mats and launched Meow Yoga, an e-commerce brand, as a side business. They currently live with their parents and brother in The Meadows, Dubai. Did wealth feature in your childhood? What did you learn from it? Chanchal: Wealth was a bit up and down. The reason we shifted from Hong Kong to Dubai was because my dad went out of business there, and he got a job here. Dubai wasn't so expensive back then, so we were on a saving curve. From a young age, our mother would tell us not to buy stuff – that put it in our heads that money is quite important and we're short on it. During the global financial crisis, our money was stuck in property. We saw some bad times. We had to move out of our house into a small apartment. And then, we rebounded. It taught us to know our limits, save when possible, but also enjoy it when you have the money. Don't spend on things you don't need. But there's nothing wrong indulging yourself once in a while. Chandini: Although we went through ups and downs, our father always tried to make sure all our needs were met, and it taught me the importance of hard work and a support system. What did your first job pay? Chandini: As a junior writer with Dubai Week, I earned Dh6,000 ($1,633) a month in 2015. Chanchal: In 2016, I interviewed with Nakheel and was hired as a property management co-ordinator on a starting salary of Dh9,500, and I worked there for nearly five years. Any early financial jolts? Chandini: When I quit my job, I didn't realise that living on your own savings and starting a business is expensive, so I ran out of money really quickly. How do you grow your wealth? Chandini: I'm still at a point where I need to save money before I focus on growing my wealth. My future plan is long-term investments, such as in properties and companies that I believe in. Chanchal: I don't have a lot of investments either. I have savings accounts. Investing in our wellness business was the first step in growing our wealth. We hope to see our income grow after a year and a half and then open up the next centre. Are you a spender or a saver? Chandini: Even though I'm a spender, I have no regrets because most of the things I pay for are about my well-being, such as massages, workouts and wellness activities. Chanchal: I'm the complete opposite. I love to save money, but I do feel like spending on yourself and for the right thing – it is important to splurge a little sometimes to have a good time. You have to enjoy what you earn. It's OK to go out and have nice dinners once in a while, but not to do it every single day. Have you been wise with money? Chandini: I'm pretty wise with money. It sounds a bit contradictory to my statement that I'm a huge spender, but I do it for the right reasons, and I have no regrets about what I spend on. So even though my savings aren't huge, I think I am wise with money. Chanchal: I like to always keep track of what I'm spending on in an Excel sheet, as I studied accounting and I'm obsessed with numbers. What has been your best investment? Chandini: It's nice having a business where you are supporting staff and the community. But my best investment is my Kindle. I can't even describe how much joy it brings. Chanchal: Definitely, our business Ekaya, considering the time and effort we put into it. It pays back in different ways. And we've already hit break even. Any cherished purchases? Chanchal: I just bought myself a new car, so I'm obsessed with that. It's the Range Rover Velar. Any financial advice for your younger self? Chandini: I grew up as a shy, quiet kid who never really stood up for herself. I would tell my younger self to not be scared to ask for what you deserve, whether it's a raise or a promotion. What luxuries are important to you? Chandini: The most important luxury to me is spending quality time with my family and friends. Chanchal: One of the biggest luxuries is finding time for yourself. I have started to find time to do things that make me happy, such as getting a massage once a week and scheduling time to play badminton. What are your financial goals? Chandini: My goal has always been to become financially independent. I want to be able to support and care for my family alone. Chanchal: My financial goal is to be independent. How I regrew my confidence after losing my hair

I didn't realise how much my identity was tied to my hair until it started falling out. What began as a few extra strands on my brush became something I couldn't ignore by the end of 2024. I knew, logically, that hair reflects the body's stress with a delay, but that didn't make it any easier to watch mine thin day by day. I felt sad, ashamed and quietly panicked. Growing up Syrian, thick hair was a kind of cultural inheritance – something women were proud of. My mother had hair that turned heads: long dark and impossibly full. I spent years trying to emulate that look. My hair is naturally pin-straight and fine, so I curled it, blow-dried it, layered it … I never left the house without doing something to it. Clean, flat hair? That was for staying home. So when the shedding began, it felt like something deeper than aesthetics was falling away. It wasn't just about losing hair. It was about losing a piece of how I saw myself and how I thought the world saw me. Looking back, it makes sense. I was working intensely, seeing no one and consumed with fixing how I looked rather than how I felt. I lost weight rapidly, withdrew from my partner and friends, and obsessed over controlling my body. I'd been spiralling for months before my hair started falling out and the shedding felt like my body's final alarm. Hair loss isn't just a cosmetic problem. It chips away at your mental health. So around the same time that I noticed the worst of the shedding, I began to make real changes – not to my beauty routine, but to my mental health. I started saying yes again to coffee with friends, to visits with family, to quiet days with no agenda. I stopped avoiding food and started repairing my relationship with it. I moved slower. I breathed more. No serum will ever replace that shift, and I say that as someone who loves a good product. That said, some things did help. I tried the usual suspects – hair loss shampoos, scalp drops and all the shiny solutions with big claims. Most of them disappointed me. But hair oiling, a ritual my mother swore by, grounded me. It didn't just nourish my scalp, it reminded me to slow down and care for something gently. The biggest physical change, though, came when I swapped my shower head for a filtered one. A few friends recommended it, and I learnt that the founder, Karlee, had created the brand after experiencing the same issues when she moved to the GCC. That felt personal. For the first time, I felt like someone understood what unfiltered water in some cities can do to your hair and skin. Within days, my hair was less frizzy. Within weeks, I wasn't pulling strands out by the handful. That shift gave me momentum. I added a spoonful of collagen to my daily routine. I took my supplements every morning. I made sure I was getting more iron and protein. I also let go of some harmful myths: not washing your hair every day will save it, and skipping conditioner prevents shedding. Clean, hydrated hair is healthier. It took time, about three or four months, before I saw real change. Even now, I have moments of doubt. I still want thick, long hair. I still consider if I should get extensions. I still have stubborn days. But I also have something I didn't have before: perspective. On the days when my hair doesn't co-operate, I slick it back and move on. I've realised that healing doesn't just show up in new hair growth, it shows up in how you talk to yourself when things aren't perfect. It shows up in being kinder to your body, in eating without guilt, in being able to leave the house without checking every angle. If you're struggling with hair loss, here's what I want to say: it's not superficial to care; it's not silly to grieve it; and it's not hopeless. Most corals in the Arabian Gulf could be lost this century to climate change, study suggests

Most corals in the Arabian Gulf could be wiped out this century because of the continued warming of the seas, a new global analysis has indicated. According to the research, coral cover in the Gulf between 2090 and 2099 is expected to be between 75 and 100 per cent less than it was between 2010 and 2019. While the forecasts vary according to future greenhouse gas emission levels, the study calculates that under a 'middle-of-the-road' scenario, coral cover globally will decline by about 58 per cent by the end of the century. The study also found that corals in the hottest parts of the world will not be able to expand fast enough into cooler areas to cope with the damage they will experience from the warming of the oceans. Writing in Science Advances, the scientists said that 'the most severe declines in coral cover will likely occur within 40 to 80 years', but that large-scale expansion of coral reefs into cooler waters to compensate for this 'requires centuries'. Some regions, such as the southern coast of Australia, are forecast to see increases in coral cover, but most will see a decline, with the Arabian Gulf among the hardest hit. The study's first author, Dr Noam Vogt-Vincent, of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, told The National that it was 'well-established that coral reefs are facing a precipitous decline over the coming decades' and this is being observed in multiple 'bleaching' events, where high temperatures make coral expel algae that live inside them. Corals face growing threat 'As the ocean warms, conditions suitable for reef formation will shift away from the tropics,' he added. 'It was previously thought that parts of the subtropics and temperate seas might be able to act as 'refugia' for tropical coral species, possibly allowing them to avoid extinction as they experience catastrophic losses in the tropics. 'Our study suggests that, although coral range expansion will eventually occur, it will probably take centuries, which is far too slow for these new higher latitude environments to act as refugia, given that they're already threatened.' He said that the problem was not that coral larvae could not reach new environments, but that their growth in numbers was too small for them to develop into larger populations that could sustain themselves. While the study forecasts that most coral in the Arabian Gulf will be lost this century, Dr Vogt-Vincent said caution should be exercised when interpreting the finding, partly because the model looks at global-scale changes and as the area has extremely high temperatures, the corals are not typical of the Indo-Pacific region. The new study, Anthropogenic climate change will likely outpace coral range expansion, is also written by scientists from the University of New Hampshire in the US and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. The Arabian Gulf is 'very likely to continue warming as a result of climate change', said Dr Diana Francis, an assistant professor and head of the environmental and geophysical sciences lab at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi. 'Recent studies have shown that the Gulf has warmed by approximately 1.0 to 1.5 °C over the past 40 to 50 years,' she said. She said that the rate of warming in the Arabian Gulf was faster than the global average because it was shallow, semi-enclosed and received much sunlight. As well as making seas warmer, climate change is also causing them to rise, through expansion of the water and the melting of ice sheets and glaciers. Prof John Burt of New York University Abu Dhabi, who was not involved in the latest study, but who researches corals around the UAE, said that the more that range expansion of corals was studied, the more it became apparent that 'these were this was 'not sufficient to keep pace with the impacts of climate change in the tropics'. He said that only a limited range of coral species, typically more 'generalist' types adapted to a wider range of environments, could make the leap to new environments. 'We are not replacing the diversity or functioning of these amazing tropical ecosystems through range expansion,' he said. 'The present paper adds a further nail in the coffin for this line of thought by showing the rates of expansion are only a fraction of what is needed just to replace the total amount of live coral that will be lost on tropical reefs under climate change, not even considering species diversity.' He said that while Arabian Gulf corals were the most heat-tolerant in the world, they 'are not immune to climate change'. 'Recent marine heatwaves and global-scale bleaching events have caused the loss of over 80 per cent of corals from many regional reefs in the past decade alone,' he said. Taking action Efforts are being made to protect corals, with Abu Dhabi having recently revealed plans to plant millions of coral colonies across more than 900 hectares. The initiative is led by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, which said its efforts had seen it restore more than one million colonies. Dr Burt and his colleagues are looking at selective breeding to produce heat-tolerant coral larvae, an approach that could lead to the production, he said, of millions of offspring better able to cope with higher temperatures. 'However, unless we get CO2 emissions under control, the long-term vulnerability of even these robust individuals in the wild remains an open question,' he said. Researchers say that reducing other factors that stress corals, such as pollution and overfishing, can have a positive effect on reefs, but Dr Vogt-Vincent said that such measures alone were not enough to protect these ecosystems.
