Trump administration extends tariff pause on Chinese-made chips for 90 days

The Trump administration has extended a long-running exemption for Chinese-made chips from a 25 percent tariff imposed during President Trump's first administration. The office of U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a notice posted Saturday it was extending the exemption, set to expire that day, to Aug. 31. The 25 percent tariff, which initially went into effect in 2019, would have applied to a variety of products, including graphics processing units — the chips at the heart of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. The extension of the years-long tariff exemption comes as the second Trump administration weighs whether to impose separate import taxes on semiconductors. Trump has imposed wide-ranging tariffs in his second term, instituting hefty 'reciprocal' tariffs on dozens of countries, including China. However, he has put many of these import taxes on hold in the face of market concerns. Semiconductors were exempted from these tariffs, although the president has said he plans to impose separate sector-specific tariffs. The White House announced in April it opened a national security investigation into the effects of importing semiconductors, the first step toward instituting tariffs under a provision known as Section 232. Semiconductor tariffs, like other import taxes on tech products, pose difficulties for companies given tech firms' heavy reliance on international supply chains. Nvidia, a leading chipmaker, has begun producing some of its advanced chips at a factory in Arizona and plans to spend $500 billion expanding its AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years. RI House to vote on assault weapons ban

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Gun rights legislation will go before the full House Thursday night for the first time since the debate began over a decade ago. This is the first time an assault weapon ban bill has made it out of the committee, after it passed 12-6 Tuesday night. While fully automatic weapons, such as machine guns, are already illegal in Rhode Island, the Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2025 (H5436) aims to prohibit the purchase, sale, manufacturing, and possession of certain weapons, including semi-automatic shotguns, rifles and pistols. A new 'grandfather clause' was added to the legislation, allowing Rhode Islanders who own assault-style weapons as of July 1, 2026, to legally keep them without having to register. What does RI's proposed assault weapons ban mean for current gun owners? Owners will have the option to voluntarily register their weapons with police to receive a certificate of possession. A previous version of the bill included mandatory registry, but that was scrapped after pushback from critics. The legislation also carves out exemptions for Olympic-grade pistols and does not apply to standard handguns, shotguns or hunting rifles. It's expected to pass the House but faces challenges in the Senate with a new president in place who will decide if it makes it to the Senate floor for a vote. The House session begins at 4 p.m., and the assault weapon ban bill is the last item on the agenda. Download the and apps to get breaking news and weather alerts. Watch or with the new .
